I dunno, I don't have WhatsApp installed so I only use SMS because I know everyone has it.

And the opposite happens pretty much anywhere else in the world: everybody knows that whatever 3rd party solution is installed in everyone's phones so they avoid sending SMS since they're like 20 cents a pop unless the carrier bundled them with a very expensive plan so there's a chance people won't even answer unless it's an absolute emergency.

I find it so funny how the US is seemly the only place to use SMS instead of other messaging apps.

Kind of like that metric/imperial stuff.

I'm in the UK and have unlimited SMS, so I just use that.

I'm in the UK, the only human that texts me through SMS is a single stubborn iPhone user. Everyone uses WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.

Everything is free, so having unlimited texts isn't an advantage. They're shit.

Join the wireless future, I'm fine with it. I've yet to use the headphone jack in the 6. Just a useless hole.

I guess I don't understand cell phone manufacturing but how does removing the headphone jack improve anything. How is Samsung able to make a better phone than nearly everyone while having a headphone jack and no notch?

Samsung's phones are bigger, they have more bezel, thus more room around the screen in general for other things. It's a valid choice to make, but not that odd. The Notch haters find this hard to believe, but some people prefer to not have full bezels and like the aesthetic of minimalist bottom bezel (or even better, no bottom bezel like iPhone does) and a notch.

As for removing the headphone jack, it does have a small positive effect on battery life, as the headphone is not just the port, but a small DAC as well, which does take more power than Bluetooth does. So it's not entirely untrue that it positively affects battery life even if the extra space isn't used for a bigger battery.

there's literally no reason to remove a headphone jack (well except to sell you accessories)

phones can be waterproof with it
phones can have big batteries with it

I'm ok with type c earbuds because they normally have DACs and sound better than bluetooth. But still...damn

Even if its small, that black border around the iPhone X screen is still a bezel. Its oart of the front glass, ergo a bezel. I hate notches, but can see me using a phone with one. But even then, how does such a big screen negate space for putting a 3.5mm jack in a phone. You don't put it on top because the connector for the screen is behind the notch, makes the phone a bit thicker but it negates the need for a chin, make a little space on the bottom, and boom, you have space for a jack. Maybe don't make symmeyrical grills for the.mike and speaker setup, move the speaker to the side like samsung in the midrange, and double boom, even more space. Seriously, think about it. Put two speakers on the sides of the phones, put the second mike somewhere on the bottom like the top noise cancelling one, put the type-c jack and headphone jack on the bottom symmetrically like the speaker grills on phones now, MicroSd/Sim tray on the otherside of the physical keys, and everything fits. Is it really that hard?

I have a 3.5 jack + 4K battery + 8mm thickness in my Nokia 7 Plus, those excuses are fucking bullshit and you know it. They want you buying their expensive USB-C headphones or even more expensive bluetooth thingies rather than just purchasing the best quality, fairly priced regular headphones out of which they don't see a single cent.

And that. That is the first and foremost thing ablut removing the jack. Thank fuck its not lime that one company which has special lins in their type c cables making them proprietary.

It's all just bullshit.

My note 9 got a larger battery, bigger higher res screen without a notch, headphone jack, heart rate sensor, stylus a Bixby button! All this stuff for 24grams over the OnePlus 6 and a few mm increase in dimensions.

I see plenty of people holding their phone and a battery pack in the same hand, so they clearly are fine with more weight.

Matter of time before Samsung does it, TBH

It's absolutely ridiculous that now you have to go for budget or midrangers if you want features that flagships just won't have.

Note 9 must be is a engineering marvel then from all the excuses I'm seeing for why there's no head phone jack. Oneplus should have saved that move until next year when everyone will be using the SD855.

I can't wait to watch all the Youtubers talk about how it has a bigger battery and maybe better water resistance and that the trade-off for the headphone jack is totally worth it even though the Note 9 has a huge battery and water resistance.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The only way I'm settling for a lack of headphone jack is if I'm getting a 120Hz screen.

"Never settle" my arse.

Loving my P20 so far. It may not have the triple camera of its bigger sibling, but it sure takes some killer pictures.

EMUI has grown on me. It's snappy and battery friendly.
Jazzy you werent wrong when you told me "P20 hands down"

I don't see Samsung removing the jack until they either go with a foldable device or go all-screen requiring the display to be folded internally.

Yeah I'm 50/50 in guessing what they are going to do. Signs point to them removing based on what Qualcomm is doing, but at the same time they are clearly leaders in terms of internal engineering and may decide to still keep it if they think the pros out way the from a user standpoint. If they make the move I would like them to include USB C versions of the headphones in the box and push for significant upgrade to their Icon X headphones.

The problem with USB-C headphones is that you never exactly know what kind do you need. There are either passive models that rely on a DAC inside the phone (or else they won't work) and active ones that include said DAC so they're essentially an USB sound card and with some phones they require activating USB data transfer before they work. Exactly the same goes with the USB-C to jack dongles and It's a complete and total mess.

You know what I hate? People comparing a headphone jack to a floppy disk in the other threads. The floppy was replaced by optical discs and then USB both of which were better in every way. BT/wireless is more of a lateral move at best where you're giving up multiple clear benefits for one positive (portability/lack of wires).

The crazy thing is BT and headphone jacks exist together right now. How is removing one helping the other.

People are worrying about a stupid headphone jack? Wait till the try the garbage fingerprint reader on that phone. OnePlus is fucked. They will lose their tech nerd fanbase with the headphone jack removal and will lose any potential joe schmoes with that garbage reader.

"Stop trying to make fetch RCS happen"

Nah, jokes aside, it took years to move everyone into Whatsapp/Telegram/WeChat/whatever since SMS never stopped being an absolute rip-off so people jumped ship at the first chance they saw to send messages virtually for free. The Messages/SMS app on phones for most people is just that useless icon where you receive spam, notifications from your bank and verification codes. Even with the market share of Android in the rest of the world they wouldn't be able to pull it off. I mean, even grandparents are on whatsapp, good luck trying to teach them a different app at this point.

Edit: also, does it even work with MVNOs? I see that carriers in Spain for example called it "joyn" but there's literally no information or advertisement of it anywhere and if you asked around, nobody knows the fuck is it. I wouldn't even be surprised if that was just another separate app that carriers load in branded phones and that people avoid touching because it looks like generic carrier garbage bloatware.

Universal Profile can be used by MVNOs. Also the only apps that use it are Android Messages and Samsung Messages. Carriers have no apps capable of using it.

Also, your country's whatsapp userbase != all countrys whatsapp userbase.

Well then I'm missing something since I'm on Google's Messages, I have contacts that I know for sure also have that SMS app as default on their phone and if I try to text them, it will always say that it will be sent as SMS

Because RCS hasn't rolled out yet. It's not an app but a standard that'll be implemented through the network.

I will never buy a phone without a headphone jack, but what would it take for y'all to get one? Bigger battery/less bezel?

Can't really think of any big feature that would necessitate its removal.

Nothing necessitated the removal of SCSI and FireWire and standard parallel/serial/PS/2 ports, but we dongle-lifed a few years and then moved on.

In a few years, the wireless audio headset world will resolve itself and nearly everyone will forget about 3.5mm jacks. We're just not in that world yet.

Well, keeping the 3.5mm for at least a few more years until bluetooth doesn't suck donkey dick and USB-C actually works like a standard and not like the wild west would have been nice. You know, we didn't drop all ports from PCs like they were hot shit just because USB happened, it took a long time, despite all the bullshit Apple pulled to make you believe the contrary. I mean, my motherboard STILL has PS/2, and it was released last year.

It's funny seeing the same arguments presented by the Apple's Courage defense force, but for Android phones.
