what happened with the OG FE dude, anyway?
Long story short (and with plenty of gaps):

Around the time Thracia 776 was finishing up, Shouzou Kaga went ahead and started forming his own independent game studio, and then left while at least attempting to take plans for a new FE game with him. At his new studio, he started work on Emblem Saga for the PS1, which was Fire Emblem in everything but name, including the apparent use of the Archanean setting. Nintendo threatened legal action, which led to enough changes that the game became TearRing Saga, but it was still pretty much FE with a different name. There was a lengthy legal battle between Nintendo and the game's publisher Enterbrain over copyright infringement that, after appeals, left Nintendo with a monetary award, but the game was still allowed on store shelves.

The whole court battle was probably what led Kaga to not copy the FE design template for the second TRS game. It played dramatically differently, with things like hexagonal map grids and other changes. But after that game was released on the PS2, his studio didn't make any more games. A few years ago, he officially retired from the industry (despite not having done any major game work since the second TRS game), but recently worked on an independent strategy RPG using RPG Maker-like SRPG Studio called Vestaria Saga.

EDIT: To summarize:
  • Kaga formed a new studio while still an employee at Intelligent Systems.
  • He tried to take plans and assets for a new game with him when he left.
  • He made a blatant FE clone for a competing console and Nintendo's legal team got involved.

There was absolutely a small contingent of Earthbound fans before Smash 64, but remember we're also talking before the Internet was a real thing to the majority of people. Those kind of communities just didn't exist, or at least very few people had access to them if they did. The Internet and Smash 64 combined to increase the Earthbound fan base exponentially over the course of several years.

Ryu seemly supposed to be next Friday character so I wonder what updates they chose to move up (another than a newcomer) so I guess something related to newcomer that are going to be announced tomorrow?

they'll reveal trophies in the direct and update the blog with an Inceneroar trophy

Oh wait no! They'll reveal the Alola stage with an Incneroar background appearance

yeah that sounds nice

It was next Thursday's update, but I'm not sure 143 was supposed to be newcomer related. Feels like if it was, it would have been in place of Summit.

A lot of nerdy communities existed - there's a kind of '90s website experience that you'd have to see (and maybe hear) to really appreciate - but they were smaller and more clique-y due to lacking infrastructure (both online resources and the physical means to access the Internet).

That era was also within the dotcom bubble, where even businesses struggled with the Internet. They knew that it was going to be big and they could made money off being there, but they had no idea what to do with it and often didn't think to connect it with their normal business processes.

Imagine spending a roster slot on a clone with limitations that tight. I get it for Smash 64 - that dev cycle was quick, and they needed a lot of clones. But on a blank canvas, it's just not worth it.
If Smash was all new in 2018, Luigi could easily be less of a clone and reference more things like Luigi's Mansion in his move set.

Imagine cutting Luigi from the original twelve.

Imagine ruining your credibility so quickly.

By that logic you're basically just subbing out ness, captain falcon, and jigglypuff for a more relevant pokemon, a fe character, and inklings. Maybe you drop yoshi for villager/isabelle but it gets dicey from there.

Geno is more famous for being a Smash request than he is for being a video game character, so I feel like any character is possible if they also become famous for being a Smash request. We need to start putting the Viewtiful Joe movement in motion.

All that blank space makes it seem like we were potentially supposed to get a Simon-esque newcomer drop? Newcomer from a new series, stage, AT's, items, music etc.

If every Pokemon was cut and 10 new ones (the amount probably in ultimate) had to be added to replace them

Who would you choose?
1. Wigglytuff (who's even cuter than Jigglypuff)
2. Snorlax
3. Suicune
4. Gardevoir (with form change)
5. Deoxys
6. Piplup
7. Meloetta (with form change)
8. Braixen
9. Decidueye
10. Mimikyu

It's also worth noting that Earthbound had been significant because it was a joint effort between Nintendo and Shigesato Itoi, who was famous for many things outside of video games for many years. My high school Japanese teacher even knew Itoi, and she didn't play games at all.

cutting Luigi and Jiggs from the OG roster makes sense if you want twelve different franchises between twelve different characters, but it's weird to posit a hypothetical that has a major 2018 fighting game from Sakurai would only have twelve characters, yet, unlike the original Smash 64, none of them are clones to any extent

The Wonder Red fandom will gladly cosign this. We both support masked Kamiya superheroes that have been treated too poorly by their publishers.

Incineroar don't cares what y'all want with Litten or Torracat. He just threw them out and invite himself into Smash Bros.

With only 12 roster spots, I guess the question becomes would it be best to represent the most franchises, the most popular characters, the best selling titles, or all of the above.

Yeah, I guess so. It's interesting how much they changed the schedule and I wonder how long it would take them to go back to right track.

Stage and/or assist trophy seems likely.

Probably!

Surprised that they chose to highlight the SFC port of SFII and not the actual arcade cabinet, let alone SFI. What have they done with the other third parties? Cloud is gonna be a bit iffy I assume.

Characters without a major appearance on a Nintendo system early on--such as Sonic and Snake--just get skipped for memories. Cloud will probably be skipped too. Bayo could go either way, they might skip her or they might opt for the Bayo 1+2 Wii U release.

I feel like Nintendo would want to promote Bayonetta as much as possible, given that they're funding Bayonetta 3 and the character has practically been adopted by them at this point.

What's that Mariah Carey song where she sings "You're delusional"? I feel like I'm going to need to link it here a lot.

JK, you're all good.

Since this week will have 4 character trailers anyway, I think they should just go for broke: Put all 4 planned updates tomorrow (instead of a 2/2 or 3/1 split), throw 143 into next week, 140 replaces the pikmin music and then just not have 3 character videos

THey need to double up on updates anyway otherwise there will always be an update missing. Or they can just ignore 143 (or some other rando update) if it's not important

I agree. Pokemon anime watchers should be held accountable until Pikachu gets its original cry back.

They also need to be held accountable for Ash not growing up, becoming a Pokemon Master and hooking up with Misty, which is of course the true and canonical ending that Game Freak refuses to show you because of Pokemon anime fans.

Well, they need to make up for one missing character update last week so that would make sense why they did 4 characters this week. Also there is a theory about 3 characters per week.

I know, I lived it too. That's why I said, if they existed, they weren't very big. It's not like it is now, or even like it was in 96-97 when Internet adoption became more wide ranging. Wider Internet acceptance+Smash 64 had a huge impact on the Earthbound fan base for sure. Before that we're pretty much running on personal experience, but it's safe to say there was absolutely an Earthbound cult following pre-Smash64.
It's also worth noting that Earthbound had been significant because it was a joint effort between Nintendo and Shigesato Itoi, who was famous for many things outside of video games for many years. My high school Japanese teacher even knew Itoi, and she didn't play games at all.
Yeah, Japan is a totally different story than overseas, where Itoi was a known quantity. I can't speak to that experience at all, though.

If they stuff this week with 5 videos then everything still works out. We make up for last week and next week. Basically 2, 5, 2

The Sun/Moon anime is the absolute best when it comes to art direction. No way did nonsense like this reaction shot ever appear in earlier seasons:

C9PUZktXkAMNRni.jpg

Team Rocket used to just break the 4th wall, now they have learned how to transcend art styles and its kind of scary. Like the most recent episode I did a bit of a double take here.

  1. Primarina <3 <3 <3
  2. Eevee
  3. Vaporeon
  4. Jolteon
  5. Flareon
  6. Espreon
  7. Umbreon
  8. Leafeon
  9. Glaceon
  10. Sylveon

Id combine all the eevees into one character
