I'm still holding out for Flygon as a Charizard Echo. Flygon deserves justice after being cheated out of a Mega Evolution.

This is an objectively awful take. What, do you hate Venusaur, Feraligatr, Sceptile, & Empoleon, too? Besides, I thought we all agreed Torterra was the worst starter?
I hate Empoleon. I hate most steel types but Empoleon is all my least favorite things combined into a Pokemon.

Are we talking legit parody or XB2 Tora style "parody"
He's obsessed with an anime targeted at young girls, fucking flips out at the possibility of missing his chance to get in line for hot new anime merchandise, wears anime T-shirts everywhere he goes, and his Japanese voice actor voices him as a loud, brash, obnoxious American that happens to be fluent in Japanese. The weirdest he gets is with an admiration of Mamori (an elementary schooler), though it's in no way lecherous and is more idol worship. (If anyone suggested anything lecherous about her, he'd honestly be the first person to both defend Mamori and probably punch whoever made the comment in the face.)

The guy is an overt fucking otaku dipshit, but he means well.

Hey, I just thought of something, if Ryu never turns his back on his opponent in a one on one battle, does that mean Robin's Nosferatu and Shulk's Back Slash can never be their most effective against him?
You'll probably be able to attack him from behind at certain points in the match, such as right after dodging his Tatsumaki.

Don't mean to get all fact-checked here, but I do have some points against Bandanna Waddle Dee, in particular about Kirby representation in general and it's relationship with Sakurai's career. Here's some points for why I think he is unlikely to be a new fighter:

1) His current iteration as a Kirby fourth friend does not match Sakurai's design. Unlike Kirby himself, Metaknight and obviously Dedede, Bandanna Waddle Dee appeared as an enemy in earlier (read: Super Star and GBA) games and his more recent depiction as an ally that was created much after Sakurai quit HAL Labs. People tend to consider Sakurai overzealous over his own OCs specially after Dark Pit got in (which further suggests he may opt for Viridi instead of Medusa as a Palutena Echo), but somehow they forget this entirely when talking about Kirby?

2) Speaking of Sakurai, if he ever holds a grudge after leaving HAL, which I believe he does considering Kirby is still his most popular creation, then he's very likely to ignore everything past Kirby Air Ride, which wouldn't be surprising if we consider pretty much every Kirby stage, fighter and Assist Trophy hails from pre-Crystal Shards era. Not even poor Adeleine was given at least a regular trophy treatment, much less an AT spot. Besides that, stuff like post-KAR music is predictable to exist, and Kirby's and Dedede's new Final Smashes obviously feels needless and just kinda of an advertisement compared to their actual moveset and stage origins.

3) Before the N64, Kirby had several other sidekicks alongside Dedede and Metaknight to serve as actual secondary characters that doesn't feel as "Blue Toad" as Bandanna Waddle Dee does both in our current perspective as well as possibly Sakurai's. Gooey, for instance, is a candidate as he matches the general era Sakurai tends to draw inspiration from, even though Dream Land 2/3 material seems absent from Smash aswell (which further suggests the kind of grudge he holds with how Nintendo handled Kirby sequels).

4) Besides Gooey and actual Player-2 secondary protagonists, there's plenty of known enemies that are much more prominent to Kirby lore as Helpers than Bandanna Dee, including the already-AT Knuckle Joe, but also characters like Blade Knight (as a possible Meta Knight echo), Sir Kibble and Gim. I'm not saying these are more popular than Bandanna Dee, but they match better the (very restrict) source material Sakurai seems to tend to draw inspiration from when adding Kirby content in Smash. If you also consider popular mini-bosses, Bonkers (as a possible Dedede echo), Chef Kawasaki, Paint Roller, Bugzzy and Dyna Blade all seem very doable as heavyweights. Speaking of bosses, I also believe that Lololo and Lalala shpuld get some sort of reference somehow, maybe not necessarily as playable fighters but at least in AT form.

1) This is reliant entirely on assuming Sakurai is so bitter about not being the head of the Kirby series, & refusing to add a popular character for that reason alone.

2) This is the same as Point 1.

3) See Point 2.

4) As much as I'd love Bonkers & Bugzzy, none of those characters are more popular than Bandana Dee. And most of them are a bit of a stretch. I definitely think you're overselling Blade Knight & Paint Roller's chances.

I'm gonna assume you mean original 8? Smash 64 had 12 total, including the hidden 4.
1. Mario
2. Link
3. Pikachu
4. Donkey Kong
5. Kirby
6. Villager
7. Inkling
8. Marth

Hidden:
9. Samus
10. Olimar
11. Bowser
12. Zelda
I think Luigi is more likely to be in the game than Bowser. Not only is his skeleton extremely similar to Mario, he has been only skipped two of the mainline Mario games.

If Smash was making its debut this year, who'd ya'll have for your original 12 and secret 4?
Mario
Link
Samus
Kirby
Donkey Kong
Pikachu
Inkling
Villager
Fox
Olimar
Shulk
Marth

Secret

Pit
Mr. Game and Watch
Ness
Captain Falcon

Focusing on representing a wide variety of series. Peach, Bowser, and Wario didn't make the cut because I wanted to represent more series.

The secrets are all semi-deep cut retro characters.

I cut Yoshi for Olimar because I'm rude and don't like the Yoshi's Island games.

I don't see Zeraora getting added even if the timelines matched up. It's a Pokemon that's going to quickly fade into obscurity because:
  • It's tied to an event not everyone will get
  • That event is an event only for the 'director's cut' version/s of Gen 7 that sold half as much as the original releases (still a lot, but less than a lot of games in the series)
  • IIIRC it wasn't even released until the next Pokemon games had already been announced, and it was just put out there without much fanfare
Obscurity?

Zeraora did have his own movie, after all.

FE is huge because of Awakening. FE had very middling sales in the decade after Marth appeared in Smash.
Yep. Marth and Roy certainly helped Nintendo consider localizing the series, but that entire era of sales was a decline. And Shadow Dragon bombed so hard it almost killed the series in the west.

Everyone not having Cpt Falcon in the starting roster make me sad. The greatest completely made up moveset and over the top cornyness.

It's still incredible to me that Shozou Kaga Fire Emblem only has one rep while Awakening alone has three. You would think the creator of the series would have some clout in these decisions, but I guess there's too much ill will between him and Nintendo for that to happen.

OK, let's do this
  1. Mario
  2. Link
  3. Pikachu
  4. Kirby
  5. Donkey Kong
  6. Samus
  7. Inkling
  8. Marth (let's assume FE would've gotten localized in the West eventually without Melee)
Secrets
  1. Fox
  2. Luigi
  3. Villager
  4. Charizard

I've been looking at Lady Bow sideways for a little while. I think s/he has had some inside info all this time. Lady Bow is what will have me holding out for Skull Kid.

That's fair that's also the reason I think he might be in. I just think the chair theory is far fetched but I mean I am a Ridley fan who gave into the Shadow theory last game out of desperation so that might be why I refuse to believe the chair theory now.

You may joke, but that's honestly why I think Inciniroar has a better chance at getting in over other Pokémon. It's clear by now that Smash Ultimate has a heroes vs. villains theme, and Pokémon doesn't exactly have a "villain" rep yet that can work as a fighter (Mewtwo coooould fill the role, but that's a bit of a stretch)
Mewtwo was the villain of the first Pokémon movie and the final final boss of the first game. Saying Incineroar is more of a villain for Pokémon than Mewtwo is the real stretch.

Besides I think people really are taking this "villain" theme thing and running with it. I'm not convinced this is what the roster is being weighed on.

Oh, geez. Given just the known circumstances of his departure from Intelligent Systems, it seems Kaga burned every bridge he could set a match on before he left. He wasn't even mentioned in a book on the history of the series released for FE's 25th anniversary.

He's persona non grata as far as Nintendo is concerned.

Base roster:
  • Mario
    • DK
    • Yoshi
  • Link
  • Pikachu
  • Kirby
  • Samus
  • Inkling
  • Fox
  • Spring Man
  • Marth
  • Olimar

Secrets:
  • Villager
  • Duck Hunt
  • Lucario
  • Zelda
Tried to avoid my personal biases and get a list of varied characters with some weird picks

I'm debating whether or not Marth would get in.

Because FE is huge now, but it's only huge in part because of Smash...
That's a really good point, who knows where the FE franchise would have ended up without Smash
