well... I also think emboar is a great design. Every generation has people hating on one thing or another while im usually just like one looks more appealing personally while theyre all well designed.
Yeah. The hate mainly comes down to how Game Freak reveals the starters and their evolutions. Since the starters are generally among the first Pokemon shown off for a given game, people tend to spend the most time with them (like nearly a full year) before they end up seeing the final evolution. When you spend that long planning on a specific starter only to then end up disliking the final evolution, disappointment turns into outright hatred.

In that case Incineroar stands out from the others by being the most humanoid of the starters, even more than Blaziken because of having 5 digit hands, planted feet and a more expressive face, I guess because of not having a beak.
the cat face does get to have more human emotion to it than bird beak face yeah

incineroar also probably stands out more since it's a traditionally 4 legged animal operating mostly (horrifying anime movie run aside) on 2 legs while not being as goofy looking as ol' bolwing ball fire beard emboar. The type of (horrifying) chicken Blaziken is based on also has a habit of standing upright, though I don't think the shamo chicken is that well known for these discussions.

Incineroar is playing musical chairs with Decidueye, Rowlet, Tapu Koko, Lycanroc, Primarina.
Please don't win, Incineroar.
please don't win
No one knows chairs better than Incineroar

Smash Bros needs more heels.
You may joke, but that's honestly why I think Inciniroar has a better chance at getting in over other Pokémon. It's clear by now that Smash Ultimate has a heroes vs. villains theme, and Pokémon doesn't exactly have a "villain" rep yet that can work as a fighter (Mewtwo coooould fill the role, but that's a bit of a stretch)

I don't see Zeraora getting added even if the timelines matched up. It's a Pokemon that's going to quickly fade into obscurity because:
  • It's tied to an event not everyone will get
  • That event is an event only for the 'director's cut' version/s of Gen 7 that sold half as much as the original releases (still a lot, but less than a lot of games in the series)
  • IIIRC it wasn't even released until the next Pokemon games had already been announced, and it was just put out there without much fanfare

Well what was that intro to the K. Rool trailer about? Why have K. Rool AND Ridley? Why put emphasis on villain-based bossfights?
because "everyone has their villain except Samus and Donkey Kong!!" has been a talking point for a long time now and K. Rool's trailer paid respect to the fact that they finally filled in those gaps

titling the trailer "THE RIVALS" is pretty telling

The theme for that particular trailer was. Not necessarily the full game. Smash 4 didn't have a hand-drawn animation theme because Little Mac's trailer had it.

I secretly think this too even though I really want Incineroar

The reason they call it Nintendo Direct is because they will be appealing directly to my tastes and mine alone. Sorry everyone, maybe you'll get one later.

Ridley and K Rool being added together isn't a coincidence--they're some of the most discussed characters in the core fandom and have been so since at least Brawl, maybe earlier.

About the second bit...who else are gonna be the bosses? The randos from SSE?

Next fire starter in gen 8 should be fire/ice

Gen 8 buffs ice type to resist dragon, fairy, water, ground

It's ability gives it immunity to rock types

Part of me believes that the main reason Fire resists Fairy is so Mega Charizard X becomes more appealing. And it is that silly part of me who would believe this could happen if they wanted to make one Pokémon super popular (no matter how unlikely this is).

You serious? The spirits teaser before the K rool reveal was literally showing off every Nintendo protagonist vs their respective villain. It might not apply to everybody who gets in, but there's clearly some similar line of thought being put into who should get in amongst the already represented 1st party franchises.

Also like... Incineroar is such a great name. Almost as good as Litten. Way better than bS like Greninja, Decidueye, or Primarina

Primarena is the worst starter evo ever together with ugly pig and ugly witch
You misspelled "One of the best" as 'worst".

Although honestly, this just goes to show why games like Smash shouldn't use starters unless it's a full package deal ala Pokemon Trainer. Pokemon fans will never agree on anything when it comes to starters.

The only exception was that a majority agreed Greninja was the best Gen VI starter.

That wasn't a Spirits teaser, it's part of the K. Rool trailer. It was DK watching TV, and was just meant to show that he was one of the few major characters still without his villain in the game.

What made you think people would agreed on non-starter pokemon?
