Edge and Bing are good, just that google products exist. I ddon't see the issue with them trying to pitch you one last time. It's not blocking the install or anything.

Edge is fine, but I haven't used it since I first did a fresh Windows install last year and once you tell it to stop bugging you about Edge you never get a warning or prompt again.

If anything the wording is more sad than annoying.

Ohhh weekly shit on Win10 thread. I'm here and I have beer!

Win10 is an amazing OS. The shit it got first year out was warranted tho. Shit was pretty much a beta.
Only thing Win10 needs to do now is unify their GUI elements. Slowly but surely...

Edge steals my PDF association back from Adobe Reader. Says it fixed a problem.

Edge is dirty.

I managed to disable updates on my other w10 box by setting my connection to 'metered' and wdefender doesn't write 100% of the time on my desktop. The laptop is a whole other kettle of fish.
The only way I found of preventing W10 to constantly use 100% of the HDD was to straight up replace it with an SSD. Windows 10 just doesn't work properly with an HDD because of whatever shit it's doing in the background that you can't really turn off

Oh shit. You're probably right. W10 on my desktop is a nvme. Man its a shame, is it too hard to just have a basic os, without all the bullshit you have to disable/uninstall.

Don't think I can upgrade the laptops hdd. It's some value lenovo. But you're probably right.

Every big update is still a complete crapshoot on how many computers it's going to break at work and at home for me. I'm a fan of 10 but there are still problems with it

I use Edge all the time, I think it is fine.

I used to use Firefox be it ended up getting too bloated so I moved to Chrome and that went the same way, I use Edge as my main browser for the regular sites I use and I use Opera for everything else, Opera is like how Firefox used to be.

Anecdotal (kinda) but I have 4 devices running it, two old as fuck PCs that shouldn't - for the love of god - be able to support the OS (and I run the Insider Program on them!) that never have an issue and two laptops that are...not really new, like 6 years old at least. No issues there either.

I also install Win10 on all my clients' devices unless they ask otherwise. No complaints.

Mind you, I do this for a living, install Win10 Pro, and know what I'm doing to get things running smoothly. I'm prob. just lucky but it's, to me, the best Windows OS next to 7. Updates also aren't forced anymore if you're updated from the last 6 months or so. (main complaint I hear online)

I understand other people may have issues. Not really my experience tho, usually PEBCAK.

I use chrome exclusively and cortana will pop up at least once a week saying did you know edge is faster than chrome ?
Annoying af. And btw edge internet searches are garbage
I'm aware of that notification (and mercifully I think it can turned off through some arcane setting since it never appears for me). But that's very different to the claim that Windows Defender is falsely indicating a PC is unprotected because Edge isn't the default browser, which is what the poster I quoted claimed.

people keep saying this and its factually false.

...and then they login to their gmail using chrome. kermitnoneofmybusiness.jpg
Yes their update and telemetry fuckery is factually false just like endless privacy apps like W10Privacy or ShutUP10 designed to limit this fuckery don't exist.
But imaginary person uses chrome to log into their gmail so every critique on favorite megacorp is invalid.

I have no problem bashing MS for the 10 since i do not exactly like what they did and their plans for the future but what the OP posts has never happened to me. There were a couple of very subtle messages suggesting Edge but that was it.

I do not think we have a case against 10 here.

Don't know, I use Firefox. OP also uses Firefox. Why is everyone bringing up Google Chrome? Did OP say I wish Microsoft was more like Google? I think most people already know Google is terrible with this kind of thing too. Does that excuse Microsoft from this kind of behavior?

Apple does it, too. All the platform holders promote their own stuff. It shouldn't be surprising.

Fortunately, it's easy to dismiss and continue using what you want.

Opera is like how Firefox used to be.
Have you used firefox at all since the last massive update where they switched to a completely new engine? Killed almost all of the bloat and speed issues.

What does this have to do with the topic on hand, which is Windows (Microsoft) making anti-competitive moves against other web browsers? The equivalent would be to try and use gmail and google dropping a "This works better on Android and Chrome OS!"

Well it's one time thing, just click install anyway. It's much better than getting a notice from google asking me to install chrome everytime I open gmail.

I've been seeing stuff like this for a while since I bought my new MS laptop a month ago. Anytime I use a non-Edge browser it'll tell me some pages, and especially Outlook, is better if I view it on Edge

I don't mind Edge, but Vivaldi does everything I need so I don't want to stop using it or use it less just because my computer feels guilty

Is there really much difference between 'This works better on Android and Chrome OS' compared to 'This works better in our Google Chrome browser'? Because that's exactly what Google currently does. At every opportunity they get.

I use Edge, Firefox, and Vivaldi. All depends on which one isn't giving me a headache at the time that I stick to for a while.

Microsoft needs to cut back on the advertising prompts or at least let people disable them completely.

Completely OTT response. Windows is their product, of course they're going to try and sway people to use Edge. As long as they're not blocking any other browser it's fine.
Some of us are not ok with ads built into the os we paid money for. Especially considering Ms rich history using dark patterns.

Is this new? My Windows 10 doesn't do this

Nor does it do this

Lol not new. Five Months old at least. You gotta have Edge protection on or else you're at risk. And boy do they get personal if you try to change browsers. Suddenly you're an obstacle to progress.

Mickeysoft has been on one for a while now, and I used to laugh at the *nix dudes in their little redhats and jaunty dollar signs.

I switch between using Chrome and Firefox the last few months. I get a recommended for Windows 10 for default browser on Edge in settings which I ignored. Would rather use the other two than try Edge.

Big deal, Google Chrome does the same thing if you're not using Chrome and a Google service. Right in a competitor's browser. Oh noes, whatever will I do.

For work I happily have a bunch of browsers all running fine next to each other on Win10.

It's not a big deal. I built my computer, installed Windows 10, and immediately installed Chrome. I got an "are you sure?...Edge is better" type pop-up, ignored it and went about my day. Have literally not seen that message since.

I did the exact same thing when my Surface Pro arrived, and even though it's a Microsoft hardware product, designed to be used with Edge, I've yet to see this pop-up since day one.

Mountains outta molehills around here when it comes to Windows 10.

Microsoft Edge isn't a mess now like it used to be before the last Fall Creators Update but there are still a huge number of features that Firefox excels at

I wish Microsoft would focus on making Windows 10 stable rather than advertising to us or infringing on our privacy

Yeah, I'm the one acting like this is a big deal. Sure thing...lol.
the "big deal" to you is that people are annoyed by it. so you have to stop and let everyone know how ok with it you are and how anything else is an overreaction.

people are annoyed and think Microsoft is getting shady. if that seems like a mountain to you, then yodelayhehoo.

Ironically I used edge today (I only have chrome and edge on my pc and sometimes I prefer edge) and what's the first thing I see? "Have you tried google chrome the best™ browser ever?" in huge letters on top of the edge start page.
And the kicker chrome *is* my default browser.

I just made a post saying it was a single pop-up and not a big deal, to which you've made multiple attempts to paint me as the one with the issue.

But i get it, overreacting is just your shtick. I should have realized that when you wrote this over a pop-up:
And boy do they get personal if you try to change browsers. Suddenly you're an obstacle to progress.

Anyway, carry on...

Well that is something, already the default browser but still gotta be pushy AF. Big bad MS though according to these sorts of threads, SMH.

If you went through the trouble of downloading the installer and executing it, will that warning really stop you? When you purchase Windows, you are purchasing much more than an operating system. This could be problematic from a legal perspective in some countries.

I still have Firefox but so many of the apps have been abandoned by the developers due to the new system Firefox changed to and I have found others on Opera so I don't see any need to go back to Firefox, I feel that they shot themselves in the foot with the app developers and it was at a time where Firefox could have made gains against others browsers.

I use Firefox on my Linux laptop but it's pretty basic but seems better than the Windows version, but now many of the apps don't work so I use Opera much more now.

We use Firefox on the work computers and it seems to use a huge amount of RAM, more than Chrome which uses a lot more than Edge does.

It's a website advertising, not the OS that you paid for?

It's like having a McDonalds ad in your house and saying, "well there are billboards outside, what is the difference?". Nobody would give MS shit if Edge ads were on Speedtest.net.

The difference between the MS and the Apple case is that MS have a mear monopoly of the market. So it is pretty clear where the line is drawn.
Same is happening with Android and Chrome (and other preinstalled apps).
I'm pretty sure Apple has more of a "monopoly" on Mac OS (And especially iOS) browsers than Microsoft has a monopoly on Windows browsers. Nobody I know uses Edge.
