I now revisited Battle Chef Brigade for the first time after the "deluxe" update, and it's a pretty big update! Lots of small things that have been added to make the game nicer, and the whole package feels very "complete". And BTW, the local 2-player battles have a lot of settings if you want to tweaked the battles.

I just wish there was a better way to unlock the concept art. Seems like it's taking forever since it's tied to increasing your rank via survival or the daily.

Easy is too easy though. It doesn't force you to explore synergies between units and you'll develop some bad habits if you're not careful.
Yeah my skill level is like at 75% between normal and easy. Easy is braindead. I have like a 25% success rate with a normal run. Going to experiment with some new teams but none of them outside of the Rusting Hulks seem promising.

I kind of like the daily cook-offs, and survival is a ton of fun. Keeps me coming back to the game, and the art is so worth it. Wish there was a chapter in the story for Ziggy though.

To each their own, but if you have a mobile device I'd think that would be the preferred way to play Reigns. The core mechanic is swiping left or right to choose this or that. Which is perfect on my phone, a la other apps with a similar design. And while the game probably works fine on Switch, I can't help but think part of its magic would be lost in that translation. Unless you really want that co-op mode.

To all RTS fans looking for an excellent portable experience:

I have to give my strongest recommendation to a game I believe has gone mostly unnoticed here and deserves to be a Switch success story!

Crush-Your-Enemies.jpg

Crush Your Enemies is not only a fantastic RTS to play on the go or in short bursts, it's actually surprisingly deep for a portable real time strategy and is packed with rich and high quality content reminiscent of the early Blizzard strategy games.

The art style is wonderful, the music epic, and the gameplay keeps getting more feature filled and more interesting with each additional chapter. The setting and writing are a perfect combination of bloody and humorous. Warcraft 1 and 2 come to mind - this is a bit sillier in tone but not at the expense of gameplay.

snail_fullHD_1.png

The game can be played with buttons or the touch screen and controls are quite good and well thought out.

I have now started the game's second campaign which exposes additional strategy elements not encountered in the first campaign (probably to make the learning curve easier) and feel compelled to get more people playing!

large.jpg

It has 4 excellently written story campaigns with hilarious and memorable characters, an online mode with skirmishes against strangers or friends and a local VS. mode.

For $9 $8 (correction!) it's an absolute steal! Don't wait for a sale!

Ok I'm deffo interested now, put it on my wish list and even considering downloading it right this minute.

Tho I think that maybe I should get Cosmic Star Heroine first. I always need a srpg/tactical/jrpg to throw into the mix of my Switch gaming time, usually to play at bed time until I fall asleep with the frakin Switch sitting on my face lol

There was Mario Rabbifs, then South Park, bow I'm addicted to Into the Breach (one of my beat eShop purchases of the year!) and I was thinking going for Wasteland 2 but damn gfx and performance seemed so awful in videos and screens that I've been reconsidering (I also have it on Xbox Gamepass but like anything else on stationary consoles I'm unlikely to have have the time to play it there).

So I was thinking about going for short jrpg CSH but maybe I should consider Crush Your Enemies! How frantic it is? Because as I've said I usually play these games on the can (lol) or (mostly) in bed and being the combat real-time there's a risk I'd either have trouble falling asleep OR wake up in the morning with a game over and having to restart the chapter anew.

Thanks for the great post!

Also, at 64 NOK/ 105 SAR it sounds like an absolute freakin' steal!

But my concern is more with little time to play all these games, not really about the money.

Does anyone suspect that the physical copy of Dead Cells is/will be rare? GameStop.com doesn't have it available, but Amazon and Best Buy both do. Just trying to determine if I should hold out for an eShop sale or get the physical now before it's sold out.

Woof! I posted this on the Schmup thread, and will here as well.

I've got Shikhondo pre-ordered for the Switch via PlayAsia, and figured I'd pick it up digitally before that arrives, based on the really positive Steam reviews.

I really regret this, well both, purchases already.

Backgrounds are simple scrolling illustrations, with little to no animation or dimension whatsoever. No rumble at all. And almost inaudible shot firing sounds and explosions. Enemies in the first level consist of I think two varieties, plus a scaled out and pixelated, then zoomed in, boss.

Just overall not a pleasant experience, and not worth more than $5, from what I can tell so far. Only two character classes to choose from, and the danmaku bullet variation feels more in place of actual enemy bullet placement than thoughtful design.

Watch some videos before buying...

I prefer the Frozen Titans myself, now Hazardous Mechs, those I can't get to work, like at all.

Yet people on shmup ERA were really into it, praising it especially for the artstyle and bullet patterns...

Yeah, that and Steam sent me over the edge to buy it digitally, on top of the hard copy I have yet to receive.

The art is static, surprisingly so, and for over $10, hell the same non sale price as Ikaruga, and twice that just about as classic arcade shooters from the ACA collection, this just doesn't hold up value wise. Literally, no rumble feedback, and incredibly muted , near silent weapons fire/explosions.

Yeah, I regret buying it too and I have the same complaints. Shame Nintendo doesn't offer a refund policy on the eShop. I could've bought Into The Breach with the same money.

Loved it, loved it, loved it. Only lasted me 4 hours but it was a mesmerising 4 hours and quite an experience. And I went in blind, I never knew what the game was about at all.

But by giving you access to every single scene once you complete it, there's zero incentive to replay through again.

Can't compare to CSH because I haven't played it. CYE is occasionally frantic as there are certain moments where not acting quickly could cost you the mission. But missions are short so far (around 5-10 min) so it's never really a problem and encourages experimentation.

I've been looking for an RTS like this on Switch for a while. It came out in August and is definitely scratching my itch!

Ok, I regret buying Fatal Fury 2.

The game is great, I like the fighters and how they control, the graphics, the music... I like everything about the game, but the A.I. is dirty cheap. Even in the lowest difficult setting, it will read your inputs to the point where if you and your opponent are standing still next to each other, the moment you press kick he will hit you faster. It's like "I can see in your eyes that you're about to kick me, so I'll kick you first".

I'm playing as Mai and some of her special moves are completely useless in single-player mode because of this. If you throw a projectile at the enemy, he will jump over it and hit you, even if he's very close to you and it would be humanly impossible to react this fast. In the fight against Axel Hawk, you can't land any aerials because when you jump, he will counter you -- I mean, he will counter you while you're going UP, it's crazy fast reaction time.

I wish I could play this with a friend, but since I got it for the single-player mode, it's just wasted money :(

Honestly I didn't say anything before because I you had already bought them so I just hoped you'd somehow find some
enjoyment out of then... but I think you wasted money for both games.

There's just so many great 2D fighters on ACA (even for newcomers and sp play) and excellent beat 'em ups that to waste money on FF2 or awful Burning Fight just cause they're on sale it makes little sense especially since they're not that expensive even at full price. You would have been better served just buying one full priced ACA game, like SENGOKU 3 for example, instead of those two stinkers.

'Reings' is fantastic. While I still haven't played the 'Her Majesty' sequel, the original game was one of my greatest surprises of 2016, I was really obsessed with this game back in the day.

A game that should appear in any list of essential and defining games of the current indie scene.

I don't know how much people have played or understand what's the magic of a game like 'Crusader Kings II'. While the game is disguised as a "serious" strategy game, at the end, this degenerates in a collection of surreal and humorous stories, that is about "let's see what crazy and twisted thing will happen next", like having your kids possessed by the demon.

With the basis of the humorous writing and absurdity surrounding the narrative of 'Crusader Kings II', 'Reings' takes only the bits of story, but increasing even more the level of surrealism and craziness, and introducing an hilarious control mechanic inspired in the popular dating app of Tinder.

At the end, it's like trying to have a date with Tinder in a city that more than a city, it feels close to a mental hospital, full of characters taken from a David Lynch film, mixed with a John Waters film.

How of this simple mechanic of Tinder, they're able to create a complex management sim, that it's easy to play, synthesizing the complexity of 'Crusader Kings II', is captivating.

I need to say that I played this in Steam, and this is a game that works much better with a touch control interface, instead of a controller or mouse one.

So having both entries in a single title, with an extra co-op mode and I suppose that also including a touch interface, is bananas.

Nice to see that you are still posting in these threads!

Great write up, it warms my heart when people take the time to talk about more obscure games with this level of passion. Even when RTS games are not my favorite gente, you have completely sold me the game.

It's great to have at least one opinion for every single game released in the system, and not only for the most popular releases.

Also, by looking at your bear avatar vomiting fucking rainbows, I will take very seriously your commentary praising the humor in this game :)

Well, I didn't grab them only because they're on sale. I'm super into retrogaming, and sometimes I actively look for games that are considered bad. I also run a retrogaming blog, so bad retrogames can also result in interesting posts.

That said, I like Fatal Fury 2. I know there are better fighters, but the game is dead simple: a strong punch is a strong punch, there's no "press back and strong punch and you'll do this different move". I like this simplicity, because even slightly complex fighters are usually too much for me. Sadly, the single-player mode is very frustrating and it kind of ruins the game for me :(

Burning Fight, however, is a different story. I bought it because it looked funny, and it definitely is! I mean, you can punch this clown in front of a store:

BmOpQw6.jpg

And he'll even drop french fries for you!

And what about this guy, that lives in the sewers for no apparent reason:

bJl9Oo0.jpg

There's also this very stereotypical gay man in pink clothes, will I get banned for posting this screenshot?

z4LjzYA.jpg

Looks like he was hanging around this dirty place... oh, do I see nipples in that poster? Think of the poor children that played this in the nineties!

All of this happens in the first five minutes. I can't wait to see what else the game is going to throw at me.

Hey, I know that to promote personal pages is not allowed in Era, but because I'm directly asking you and I'm highly interested in reading your blog, please, can you share a link to your web? :)

And you're right, even the bad 2D brawlers in the 90s can be still fun, due to their excessive and ridiculous approach to pop and cultural icons from the Hollywood cinema.

Oh, it's in Brazilian Portuguese, so you probably won't get much out of it ^_^

Here's a link anyway: http://www.gagagames.com.br/

Oh, the Brazilian Portuguese is not a problem, coming from Spanish. It's very easy to understand both languages coming from the other one, at least the written part :)

I always find very interesting the approach to classic video games in Brazil, given that Master System was one of its most important markets, something similar to Spain.

There are also a lot of Brazilian indie developers that I love, one of my favorite NES inspired games in the last years was 'Tcheco in the Castle of Lucio', with the same level of madness as the 'Wario Ware' series.

I even remember an obscure game inspired in 'Monster World II' mixed with a Broadway musical in which all the story is narrated through singed songs in Brazilian Portuguese, I can't even remember the name. It was released in Steam a couple of years ago, and I'm still waiting for an English release.

I need to say that the content in your blog is awesome, from talking about obscure MS-DOS CRPGs such as 'Gateway to the Savage Frontier', including the nice touch of your own drawn maps, to make an homage to Douglas E. Smith after he passed away. And believe or not, while he's a legend in the industry, not so many webs talked about his death.

Keep the good work!

And yeah, we can still easily find weird (but official!) Master System consoles with many games preloaded, not to mention the recent re-release of the Mega Drive that runs games from SD cards (again, an official, licensed product). It's like we're inside this weird time vortex here in Brazil.

I backed the Kickstarter.

Honestly can't wait for the game to come out. It seems like forever.

I also backed Nefarious for the Wii U version, now transformed into a Switch version. Same with Hover, which also releases this month. But I haven't kept up with the Kickstarter updates about those games at all.

I played some time more with Hyper Light Drifter and it's starting to get annoying some of the framerate problems it has when many enemies are on screen... it just mess the drifting mechanic to avoid getting hit, since it get some big irregular drops. This is on handheld mode, on docked mode it performs much better. Not perfect, but better.

Sleep Deprivation Zone
It was a game released in the first year of the Neo Geo system. SNK was not even sure of the success of the system, as to invest in these type of things: stealing a talented group of workers from one of the most successful companies in the arcade industry.

The real clue to fin an answer is 'In the Hunt'. Basically, from the art style, to the type of slowdown, the type of patterns, 'In the Hunt' is an underwater 'Metal Slug'.

And here are the credits for 'In the Hunt':

https://www.mobygames.com/game/arcade/in-the-hunt

It was the last game created by this team in Irem. Just after 'In the Hunt', they abandoned the company. And they started working with SNK, creating the 'Metal Slug' series.

It should be noted that back in the day, development teams were small. Normally, games were created by 4/6 persons. We have the complete credits for 'Cyber-Lip', none of them worked in Irem.

And while it's an obscure time, we have a lot of sources and projects online, trying to document not only the credits in every game, but also, finding the real name behind every pseudonym used in the Japanese industry.

Thanks for the clarification on all of this, Epilexia. Now I want to check out In the Hunt. lol

Well if the Metal Slug devs didn't have a hand in Cyber Lip that does diminish its appeal, but I think I'll still grab it when it comes to the eShop.

Does anyone here own and recommend Neo Geo King of the Monsters or Neo Geo Puzzled for $5? Reviews seem mixed for these two so I'm hesitant...

Sega Ages Sonic & Thunder Force IV hitting the eShop on Sept. 20th, i.e. next week.

Not sure if it was mentioned, but more Sega Ages titles were confirmed: Columns II (with online), Space Harrier, Sonic 2, Outrun (with new music arrangements), & the arcade version of Thunder Force.

....alright, I'll rebuy Sonic 2 if it has the drop dash. But ESPECIALLY if they finally put Hidden Palace Zone in a damn console version.

I really hope they got most of the games that were already 3D Classics out of the way, as I want more new re-releases, especially since they were gonna have games that've never gotten re-releases until now.

wait, are next week's Sega Ages releases confirmed for the West as well or just the Japanese eShop?
I'm fairly certain they said it'd be a worldwide release, or at the very lease, are coming to the west, but there's been no word on pricing.

Hmmm, just occurred to me. What're the chances they'll do a bundle of most, if not all of these on a physical cartridge like they did with the 3D Classics?

Granted, right now, the ones I mainly want are the Thunder Force titles because those are new to me, maybe Sonic 2 if it has the drop dash.

I bought all the Sega 3D Classics too. Even Ecco and Altered Beast.

Ready to go again for every Sega Ages.
