I'm not sure if this is new or not, but looks like the iPhone XS/XS Max have a new AppleCare+ With Theft and Loss protection option. It's $199 vs $299 for the Theft/Loss and the deductible for the Theft/Loss protection is $269.

Insane, my personal insurance costs €4.72 a month, for everything on me for damages, theft, loss up to €3000.

Is all insurance so expensive state-side?

So, they killed the iPhone SE (at least it has been completely removed from their website) and aren't offering anything in that price range anymore. Guess I'll sit this round out then...

They seem pretty boring. It feels like the new phones literally come down to the new chipset this year whereas they usually add some new innovation on the S model. They did a lot of showmanship to make it look like there is a lot new there, but I just don't see it. I think it has got the be the most "boring" iPhone cycle I've ever been a part of it.

yeah, I guess the hardware upgrade for the S cycle this year is the Max version.

I started with the white iPhone 4, then I went 5S, 6S and now X. I'll hold off for at least another year, but I would like to keep it longer. May end up going back on an S cycle eventually.

I mean you also get the Max this year, which is a significant upgrade because the 5.8 was a bit small if you came from the Plus.
But compare the X to the X S, not the Max. That just seems like a shrug, much more than past S years.

I have several members of my family who have iPhone 6Ses in varying states of decay. Don't know if I should recommend they just get an iPhone 8 for 600 or spend the extra 150 for the X R.

(Also, I am fine with them not including the headphone adapter, but the 5W charger is nuts).

For me, three years is about the average lifespan of an iPhone.

Bought a iPhone 4 in 2010, iPhone 5c in 2013, and a iPhone SE in early March 2017 when they bumped the storage options. I wanted to try to make it four years with my iPhone 5c but it started showing issues with newer software.

So I figure I'll be ready for a new phone in March 2020 if all goes to plan.

Series 4 is really doing it for me but I'll cross my fingers that I can get a cheap Series 3 through AppleCare before it runs out in May.
If I'm lucky maybe they have no more Series 2 stock by then.

Guys, I hope this year we don't make an OT for iOS 12, then one for iPhone Xs then another for iPhone Xr, not to mention new iPads in October, and fragment the conversation which is 90% pertinent to everyone, including for older iPhone holders.

As far as I care we could even bring it all in under Apple OT. But short of that, splitting Apple in 2 or 3 threads maximum.

I'd be all over the Xr if it just had a SLIGHTLY higher resolution. I wouldn't have minded the width was less than 1080p, but the height really needed to be 1920 at minimum (preferably 1920+the notch height) so I could at least watch most movies at full resolution. If I wanted that low of resolution for my media, I'd just get a regular sized 7 or 8, not a large phone like the Xr.

Since it's my B-day in a month, I'm thinking of just asking for Apple gift cards to make the price of the Xs Max more reasonable. I'll probably also just stick with 64gb of storage even though it'll probably bug me having that little all the time.
I pretty much only use about 34gb of my current Android phone, but I know I'll want more games installed on my iPhone (and larger 1gb+ games too like The Witness and that upcoming Elder Scrolls game). But as long as I don't go crazy with downloaded videos or music (neither of which I use very often, only when flying somewhere) I should be fine. Worst case scenario I could always get the 50gb of iCloud subscription for $1 a month.

Also a shame at the lack of Apple Pencil support and I was really disappointed by the rear color of the gold model. The black front with gold sides looks SO GOOD, but then the back is this gross pinkish flesh tone.

It's the same PPI as all the Retina/LCD non-Plus models from the iPhone 4 through the iPhone 8.

The 7 and 8 are legacy devices and not really competing with the Xr for new sales. People are going to be choosing between the Xr, the Xs, and the Xs Max, so Apple has to differentiate them appropriately.

I would go for the XR in a second -- despite these terrible names -- but I can't go back from OLED to LCD. It's so frustrating that Apple frames smaller size as a budget option instead of a different ergonomic choice.

?

The Xr is bigger and less expensive than the Xs.

I think AirPower might actually just be dead, y'all. I can't find a single mention of it anywhere on Apple's site anymore.

Hey, at least with the Xs it finally is a choice in that sense, because the smaller for the first time doesn't have a practical drawback comparing to the larger. It is still cheaper however.

I remember when smaller phones were actually more expensive lol.

I wasn't a fan of the iPhone PPI of the 6-8 either (earlier than that I was fine since I didn't watch much content or play a lot of games on my phone in those days).

I'm just used to higher resolutions and PPIs on my phones (and have been for the last 5 years at least) and wouldn't consider downgrading in that area, especially when it's still a $750 device.
Maybe if the XR was a smaller device with that resolution I could justify going with it, but for a phone that large I'm going to want it to play full 1080p videos.

To me, the biggest problem with the XR is the size. It's nearly the size of an iPhone Plus model and it's 40% larger in volume than my 6, and the reachability problems are even worse than the Plus phones since it's mostly screen. I suspect they'll come out with another SE at some point but there's no sense in waiting for something that might not come. RIP small phones.

With that said, though, the XR seems like a pretty good deal versus the XS, especially since you're getting basically everything except a 2x optical zoom, OLED and slightly more battery life for $250 less.

My Mac mini suddenly won't connect to my WiFi anymore. I haven't changed anything.
I've got a dual band router. The MM is the only device to use the 5GHz connection. I haven't had any issues for months, and suddenly it won't connect. It says "Invalid password", which is nonsense. It still connects to the 2.4GHz connection, though.
I've already tried deleting the WiFi connection, restarting the Mac, and restarting the router.

edit: Same issue on my phone. So it's the router, not the Mac.

Weird.
I replaced my iPhone 6 battery on 1st of March and its already super broken again. According to the Battery Life App its capacity has already decreased by 66%(!). It took yesterday about 85% of the batter for about 45 minutes of GPS and an constantly unlocked screen with minimal brightness.
The Apple Battery menu is already on service because it shut down prematurely a few times now, but the capacity is still on 100% and I am willing to trust that more then Battery Life, since Apple has direct access, and I stumbled across this:https://discussions.apple.com/message/33607736?start=795&tstart=0
Problem is, I am on 11.4.1, so it should be fixed. Do you think its worth trying out the ios 12 Beta? Otherwise I am gonna replace my battery again, I cant buy a new phone before christmas...
Anyone else?

I've had similar issues with my Optimum-supplied router. 5Ghz network just won't connect sometimes, the 2.4 works fine, even when the distance is quite close. No idea what the issue is.

For what it's worth, the iPhone 7 is $100 more to start, but there's a lot more in the way of added features compared to the lovely SE (processor, screen size, 3D Touch, camera performance).

Apple Watch question: is there any way to get corporate G-suite calendar notifications to show up? The account can't be added through settings (in iOS11, at least) the way a regular Google account can.

I found the camera improvements, the screen size on the max, and the chip improvements to be very impressive. Exactly what I was looking for... would have been nice to hear about some additional iOS improvements for the XS.

Yikes. Weird look if Apple can't get its own wireless charging pad out the door. But if this project is blowing up, great time for a capable third party to release something similar...
I mean, there already exist mats with multiple charging places. What Apple aimed to do was something that also charges the Apple Watch (which doesn't support straight-up Qi IIRC), charges the AirPods, for which will be necessary for Apple to also release the wireless charging case for them, allows for some free flow placement on the mat and displays a fancy UI on the iPhone indicating the battery levels. It's not just a tall order, but it's really off-limits for 3rd parties. Last thing it was heard it even ran its own version of iOS.

Someone said that the company/IP Apple bought for AirPowered was borked, and Gruber thinks they had to start over from scratch. What a mess.

Yeah it seems like they bit off a more complicated problem then they thought and to make things worse it was one of the few products they have pre announced.

I'm going to stick with wires so it doesn't bother me much, but it is certainly something of an embarrassment.
