I got this game for $10 on the Switch. Got the highest percentage completion achievement after 60+ hours, enjoying just about every minute. If we're just talking pure value for money, I can't think of any other video game that matches Hollow Knight in that regard. It's got so much quality content that I think the average games enthusiast would appreciate.
But for me, it's more than just a great deal.
I only played it just recently, but this is retroactively my 2017 GOTY, knocking Pyre off the top spot.
Hollow Knight is also now one of the best games I've played this generation. It's up there as one of my all-time favorites, alongside games like Suikoden II, Shadow of the Colossus, Journey, MGS1-3, and of course, the series that HK reminds me of the most, the Soulsborne franchise.
Hollow Knight doesn't really share a lot of the mechanics of Dark Souls, so let's just get that out of the way. This is a Metroidvania through and through. What it does have in common with the Souls games is how it instills a constant sense of foreboding mixed with wonder. You will face difficulty almost every step of the way, whether it's through getting lost in the world or dying repeatedly to a boss. Hollow Knight does not give in to the player's demands. Hollow Knight pushes back. Hollow Knight challenges you to earn everything.
And I implore you to rise up to that challenge, because Hollow Knight rewards those who overcome the many obstacles it puts up against players.
It feels amazing to beat a boss that first seems impossible until you memorize its movement and attack patterns. It feels liberating when you gain a movement ability, allowing you to traverse areas you couldn't before. It's thrilling discovering an area after going off the beaten path, which could then either lead to a huge sense of relief when you find yourself circling back to a familiar location or to an overwhelming dread when you fall down even further in the rabbit hole that is Hallownest. The way its world unravels its stories and secrets compels you to dig even deeper. There are narrative beats that legitimately send chills down my spine.
And it's not without moments of levity! There's a whole cast of oddballs, each one charming in their own weird way. Because of the artsyle, it manages to avoid the overly sinister sensation that every NPC in the Soulsborne series evokes. You actually want to be around and save the bug people you meet throughout your journey. Well, most of them.
None of its elements are groundbreaking, but with how all of them come together at the scale and level of polish that you'd expect would require a gigantic team of creators and a lot of money is such a rare accomplishment. The fact that it achieves the breadth and depth of content a AAA game can provide all the while having the confidence in its quality that it doesn't bend over backward to ensure the player sees everything it has to offer makes it worthy of even more adoration than merely stating "it's a good game".
It's certainly not for everyone, but for the people who are willing to engage with its systems and open themselves up to its mysteries, they will get so much out of Hollow Knight.
