Marvel's Spider-Man is out, and it's currently enjoying a constant barrage of praise from all angles. Insomniac Games has produced the fastest selling game of the year - at least in the UK - and that news must be going down extremely well in the offices of Sony and Marvel. Of course, Insomniac put in a lot of the leg work to produce the title, but it's important to remember that the game was only possible as a result of the three companies working together.

Bryan Intihar, creative director on the game and the man who features in a billion interviews, made this very clear in a video interview with Kinda Funny Games. Early into the spoiler-filled conversation, Intihar made a point of saying that if PlayStation wasn't involved, the game might not have been made at all.

"This game would not exist if it wasn't for PlayStation, if not for their support," Intihar stated. "Any time I wanted to do something, and I wanted to make some drastic change, it was just like, 'Okay'. I never heard about anything. It was just like, 'Go do it.' The question was, 'Is it gonna make the game better?' and I'd say, 'Yep', and they'd go, 'Okay', and that would be the last time I'd hear about it."

This isn't the first time we've heard about Sony being an extremely supportive partner when producing a game, and it sounds like the platform holder gave Insomniac full control over the creative aspects of production. Intihar felt that people weren't necessarily giving Sony due credit for its role in making Marvel's Spider-Man become a reality: "So many people want to talk about Marvel and Insomniac - which is awesome... But I owe everything to PlayStation".

Good on Sony. It was already obvious, but that PR speak about empowering creators really does mean something to them.

This is why Marvel went to Sony.

Maybe this will stop the "I don't believe them it's definitely to do with the movie deal, why would they make it exclusive etc." people.

No wonder they love working with PS. They have years of relantionship and have worked it to a point in which Sony trust them 100%, it seems.

Well.. yea?

Sony owns a lot of rights to Spiderman. Literally no one else could do it.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Edit: Welp looks like I've been corrected XD

Thanks for the info fam

Obviously.

The elephant in the room that none of the 3 partners talk about in interviews is how Sony is funding the entire project, and that the reason Sony needed to exist as a middle-man is because Marvel Games is stingy and only want to license their IP, not fund games directly from their vault of movie-profits.

Nope. Sony only has movie rights, not game rights.

Not necessarily. this is a business, and maybe other company would've seen the potential especially with how much Super Heroes are popular nowadays.

Batman existed as a high quality game series before this game, and it is not made by Playstation.

Wonder if a sequel would be out of question without Sony. The game runs pretty great on the Pro but I would kill to experience it at 60fps.

Let's hope Disney and Sony partner to make more games. I would love a good story driven Star Wars game sometime again.

Sony has it own issues, like crossplay, but I really respect the fact that they made this project a reality.

I am shocked that a first party game would not have happened if not for said party.

or maybe that singleplayer games that good would not have existed without being first party ? =/

Thank god we still have publishers like Sony on the market, supporting AAA single player and niche games. Imagine a world where companys like EA are the only source for games.

Nah, it wasn't this kind of support that Sony has been consistently praised for this gen that led Marvel approaching Sony. It was the movie deal. Strange that all these people close to the situation are straight up lying to everyone. We need real, investigative journalism to uncover this conspiracy.

This is why exclusives can be good.

I'm convinced Spider-Man would not have exist the way it does if it were multi-platform and published by someone like Activision. For whatever reason, Sony is extremely tuned in to the blockbuster AAA 1P experience right now more than anyone else.

Marvel said back when the game was announced that the brand is with Sony and Insomniac for the foreseeable future. Sony obviously wasn't going to invest big into this game if it could become a huge success and then Marvel could take it and put the sequel on every other platform.

This game is a wake up call to the poisonous industry.

It is a Single Player AAAA game with no microtrasactions. It is on the way to become the highest selling game for Sony.

I don't want to hear anymore how games "need" microtransactions because gamers want them. I also no longer will hear how Single player games are dead.

I hope the industry is watching. Especially direct competition like MS.

Congrats to Sony and Insomniac.

No, dude, this specific Spider-Man game could have only existed because of Sony's support. He's not saying there couldn't be a great Spider-Man game without them, just that this one necessitated them.

There are more interesting things said in that spoilercast, like Fragile Eagle outright confirming the sequel already and teasing a Future Foundation suit. That last one is important to me :p

Intihar certainly has come a long way. I remember grabbing food at Lee's deli as we chopped it up about I think it was GTA or whatever was out in 2007/08 while he was still at 1Up. Cool dude. Well earned success for the team.

This would require Marvel Games to start funding games themselves, which I don't believe is the current plan.
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, or another publisher that won't meddle with Insomniac's game design.
Especially if it's a Miles game or a Spider-Girl/Woman, since I can't see more Peter sequels working on multiplatforms with the first game being a PlayStation exclusive, unless it's a soft reboot of sorts.

PS5 60fps patch believe

Hahaha, I'd be okay with this, assuming it's BC and not a re-release :p

I'll admit when I first heard that Marvel just went to Sony and said let's do an exclusive super hero game it sounded mad weird. Still does lol. But I don't think they're lying.

their support of their first party and second party studios is fantastic.

I am also glad that the studios communicate and collaborate. Sucker Punch, Guerrilla Games, Studio Japan, Insomniac, Polyphony Digital, Kojima Productions, Sony Bend, San Diego Studio, Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog/ What a fantastic dev / talent line up. We will see what happens with media molecule, I know PlayStation has thrown a lot of cash at their studio but they have to release some content.

I'm extremely interested to see what happens with the Avengers game with Square Enix & Crystal Dynamics. Insomniac was allowed to choose any Marvel character they wanted & they went with Spider-Man. I wonder if the same thing happened with Crystal Dynamics & why they would choose the Avengers. That has to be extremely important to them because they left Shadow of the Tomb Raider to Eidos Montreal which in turn put Deus Ex on the back-burner.

Isnt that the case for most first party projects ?
I doubt MS couldnt have made it happen if they threw enough money at Marvel/Insomniac a couple of years ago.

Though i get the overall point - Sony was a big help to get shit done.

Full creative freedom is getting increasingly rare.

It's good to know sony let them work the magic.

You can apply this to almost every game ever :P

This game is a wake up call to the poisonous industry.

This is not only because its a quality title, but also because its based on a hugely popular ip.
unfortunately, making a quality title alone doesn't guarantee sales, and you have many examples.

I swear every time I see the movie rights being brought up I just have to laugh it off and move on lol. It's been explained so many times.

Agreed, then you see something like post #20. It's like you could tell someone that the sky is blue and they see it, but still tell you that it is orange because reasons.

Is it not a rumor that Iron Man and Thor would be main characters in the square enix AAA avengers game?

That would be sick.

Great video so far. You get a sense of why Sony is able to consistently put out so much quality. It seems the culture and understanding among some of its developers, studios and key people is top tier, that they really have great insight, support and push each other to be better and better. Not to mention they seemingly offer tonnes of creative freedom, which can be such an important thing.

Grats to Insomniac, Sony and Marvel on an incredible title. Already excited for the sequel lol. Now let's see if the other Marvel games can live up to this same level of quality.

I hate to say it again, but that's not exactly correct. An AAA Spider-Man game can exist without Sony's support. Marvel/Disney could literally license it out to anyone else if they want to. There are other developers capable of producing games of similar quality. What they meant is that a Spider-Man game, made by Insomniac, couldn't have existed the way it did if Sony didn't bring them on board or if they didn't give them any creative freedom. I just think it needs clarification because people keep interpreting it wrong. Too many people cite this as the reason why it's impossible for any other dev/pub to make an AAA Spider-Man game.
