It's a mistake for them to drop the plus line.

Anyone with a 7+ or 8+ is just not going to upgrade. You lose the second camera. Lame.

Also no touch id or headphone jack is still ridiculous.
You don't lose the second camera though. They aren't removing it from the new phones. The 6.1 phone is not the successor to the plus, the 6.5 inch one is.

You're saying the 6.1 inch has a worse screen than my 7+? Lol, no thanks.
The Xr is the "budget" phone. The Xs and Xs or whatever they call them are the mainline phone

The Xr is the successor to the SE not the 8/8 Plus.

I'm really hoping the 2mm increase for the Apple Watch is true, as I will be all over that 44mm, baby!

I am confused why people are still thinking the 6.1 phone is the succsor to the 8/8 Plus.

6.1 inch is their "budget" phone. The main high end phones are the the 5.8 and 6.5 inch ones.

There is no way it's meant to be a successor to the SE. It's going to be double the price and double the size of the SE.
It's going to be really interesting to see how they position it, because it makes no sense to me at the moment.

I understand that, but they're rumored to be charging more than what I paid for my 7+ for a worse screen. No thanks.

Yeah but that's going to cost a grand or more. Just saying, you'll see most 7+ and 8+ owners holding out this gen.

The names are TERRIBLE if they are true but it can be summed up as:

6.1 Inch Phone (Xr, XC, etc): Is the new "budget" phone. Cheaper than mainline, worse tech.
5.8 inch Phone (Xs): Main phone. Successor to what the non-Plus phones and last years X were in one line.
6.5 inch Phone (Xs Max, Xs Plus, etc): Successor to what the old Plus line was.

No way the 6.1 inch phone costs a grand. No chance.

Is Apple going with these names to help them sell phones in China? These names certainly make the phones seem like they are from a Chinese company.

This is only going to make sense if they price the Xs much closer to the 8. There is no indication of that happening.

It's a damn shame that it doesn't look like we're ever going to get finger print sensors back. I really need a new iPhone though so hopefully what they show in a few hours is really good. Also if we get a bezelless iPad Pro at some point annoyed this year, I'm all in Apple, ya hear me, DO IT!

Why? It makes sense.

Cheaper iPhone is for overseas market where contracts aren't common. Overseas markets have little to no interest in small phones, especially in China. It's why the SE was scrapped. That market want cheaper big phones, not cheaper smaller phones.

Did I miss something? I thought contracts weren't common here either anymore.

So, is the argument that there is no substantial market here for smaller phones? The market is driven almost entirely by larger $1000 phones?

I'm getting old, shit.

5.8" is already pushing it for me. Having to pay more for a smaller screen grates.

I'm really surprised they are doubling down on the X design/aesthetic (the notch). It seemed the response to it was lukewarm. I don't normally pay too much attention to these events, but I have a 7 Plus, so I'll upgrade either this fall or next fall. Based on the rumors/leaks, I'll probably wait until next year in hopes they come out with something I'm a little more excited about. My 7 Plus still works perfectly so no issues there.

almost everyone I've heard comments from that have owned an X either like or at least have no specific negative thoughts about the notch. I would rather have the notch than have more of the screen arbitrarily locked off for no real reason.

It might shrink a little but I doubt it'll disappear anytime soon. Cameras under screens is a nice idea but is it actually practical?

You are downgrading imo if you go from a 7/8+ to a 6.1 is what I'm saying.

People complaining on the internet, and I'll venture a guess and say most of them weren't gonna buy it anyway. It still sold like hotcakes.
Yup, it's very likely that this will become Apple's strongest quarter ever.
(Mainly because the average price of each device sold goes up because they have beasts like a 512 gig iPhone XS Max, which will be around ... $1.500?)

we're full on nutsville if we're conditioned to think of a possibly $800 phone as the 'budget' option. Or that they'll use a year old CPU to keep the cost down. Apple have ramped the ASP up significantly over the years, we need to stop enabling it. Yes the Xr (?) will have a folded screen to have small bezels. Yes it'll have face ID. So what? That should have had time to mature now so the costs shouldn't be as high. And a much lower resolution LCD display and probably a single lens camera is fine for around the price of the current 8 as a straight replacement.

That isn't a budget phone - thats their mainstream phone and the Xs/Max are still premium offerings.

I use "budget" in quotes because I agree its silly to call it cheap but thats how Apple seems to be treating it.

Just get a Sony Xperia compact. Newest version is under $500. Don't understand you folks who can't switch between apple and Android. I do it every six months typically with Jod. Probably sitting this apple round out though, honestly probably indefinitely if they never bring touch id back.

Yeah, I'm still inclined to think this way. If it came out with last year's A11 at a price lower than last year's 8 I would agree to considering it the "budget" offer. Otherwise it's the mainline phone.

Now granted, depending on which price rumors pan out, a lower price than the 8 is possible. Still not sure I would consider it a "budget" model on the order of the SE at the lowest rumored price of $600.

I use "budget" in quotes because I agree its silly to call it cheap but thats how Apple seems to be treating it.

Fair.

Not only the competition is following the notch like there's no tomorrow, also in advertising companies love to show the shape of the iPhone X. With their app or website or game or whatever.

I think people need to stop thinking of this new lineup as having direct predecessors. The only phone in the new lineup that has any semblance of a predecessor is the iPhone XS. The 6.1 inch LCD doesn't match up to anything previously put out and neither their does the 6.5 inch as it no longer offers more features compared to the smaller model.

The reality is that you should upgrade to a new phone if it offers you something valuable that your current phone doesn't, simple as that. Until we watch the event and get details of the final specs, we can only speculate.

Is the Xr going to be the same size as the SE? Not that I can afford a new phone but the one that would tempt me would be that rumor of an iphone 5/SE sized phone with a full screen like the 10. That actually made me jealous of not being able to get a new phone (where as I've been fine so far with my 6. First phone I haven't updated every 2 years but without subsidies I just can't justify it plus nothing really even stood out as I really needed it. Hell, I only got the six cause with some trade in offers it was really cheap for me and glad I did otherwise I'd be rocking a 5 now <- my favorite iphone but at this point it would be really outdated and slow).

Nah Apple isn't in the small game anymore by all indicatilns. The LCD screen phone is 6.1 inches.

It's not a budget phone in the same sense that the SE is was.

Just imagine Apple makes the MacBook Pro in 13" and 15", and a MacBook in 14" as a single size compromise. Screen slightly inferior and a few other specs as well, so it's cheaper than the Pros. But not cheap.

Switching from an iPhone now for me would mean:
  • Losing functionality of my Apple Watch
  • Not having access to my iTunes movies on my phone
  • Not having access to all my notes
  • Losing MacBook interactivity with phone for pages, notes, messages, phone calls etc
  • No AirDrop between my phone and Mac and whatever else
So yeah, doesn't make any sense for me to switch between them. And I actually have switched before, with iPhone 4s > OnePlus X > OnePlus 5 > iPhone X.

People want the all-screen front, and under-the-screen fingerprint tech hasn't matured fast enough to a point where it's accurate, secure, and quick enough. Going on the back wasn't going to happen either.

The internet complaint chorus was loud, but also a very small minority. The fact that nearly every other manufacturer went the notch route should tell you as much.

I suspect that the Xr will sell really well, but the compromises are pretty stark. While I'm not a total OLED fanatic there's no doubt that the X has the best display of any iPhone to date (I say iPhone because the 120hz iPads make it a close call) and going back to the single camera and a resolution closer to that of the standard iPhone 6 are not things I'm especially interested in doing.

I'm not expecting any Macs today anyway. That'll hopefully come next month. For now just gimme that new iPhone and Watch. Maybe Watch. Haven't decided yet. Haven't worn a watch since 2006 when I got my first phone. Never had an interest in the Watch, but I've been starting to warm up to the idea again just because of what they can do now that isn't just telling the time. I just hope it doesn't interfere in my work.

Are we just using this thread for reactions or is another one going to be made?

Apple has a phone for you and it's called the XS, comes in 2 sizes :p

I wonder if people buying the XS will be miffed at the size of the XR being the perfect one they would like to take.

I just assumed the other manufacturers were playing follow the leader with Apple and that it wasn't necessarily an indication that people love the design.
