Edit: I uh, apparently halfway edited the title and hit submit before fixing it the rest of the way. It should say "Blizzcon 2018 key art and physical goodies revealed, also Sombra Demon Hunter skin".

---

So as Blizzcon nears, Blizzard has started unveiling what comes with tickets for the show and other such things.

First up, the key art. with the characters being:
  • Diablo (Diablo)
  • The Raven Lord (Heroes of the Storm)
  • McCree (Overwatch)
  • Saurfang (World of Warcraft)
  • Tychus (StarCraft 2)
  • Ava (Hearthstone)

Second, the Sombra skin, which is Diablo themed (it's a Demon Hunter skin, and for people who buy the Blizzcon pass):

Third, the physical goodies, the most notable of which is a Diablo statue, in case there haven't been enough Diablo hints this year: https://www.invenglobal.com/article...t-have-you-prepared-for-me-this-year-blizzard

I thought that was already obvious given:
  • They started up a new prequel comic after not doing that for ages
  • They announced a Switch port of the previous game
  • They shoved around all their Diablo job postings on their site to make it extremely obvious they were for a new game
  • They started a series of Diablo tie-ins in their other products like Heroes of the Storm and Overwatch at the same general time leading up to Blizzcon
  • They started ramping up Diablo merchandizing again
  • And last but not least, they explicitly announced they were unveiling new Diablo games this year :P

I wasn't questioning the existence of new Diablo stuff with that, lol (I think they've also announced a new book and there have been rumors about a Netflix show iirc). They've been very blatant with the Diablo IP

Either way, I just hope that they will apply all the lessons they've learned from 3 + its expansions and create a great new Diablo game from the very beginning

That seems like a large blank space in the middle there. New announcement?

Diablo 2-looking Diablo in the key art

Diablo 2-looking figure in the goodie bag

At this point I'd be leaning more towards the reveal of the long-rumored D2 HD remake/remaster vs a whole new Diablo 4 game, but I could certainly be wrong. I definitely expect some sort of new Diablo game (as in, not another D3 expansion) to be announced at Blizzcon.

The video they put out about upcoming Diablo announcements was that they had multiple projects in development and hoped to unveil some of them this year, so I suspect it's both.

Mind, they also might be making a Diablo mobile game judging by their job postings, but that seems to be the least far along.

Still think it's remasters (at best) this year, new game next year.

Of note, there's a second version of the keyart that moves the little mouse guy. That would be the placement for if you move the BlizzCon logo down to make room for a new character in the middle (for a new IP, for example). Last time they had a new game to show (2014) they just didn't release the key art until they had announced it.

The biggest tell will be the schedule reveal, which should be a few days before the show. Either a gap or a big Diablo panel right after the opening ceremony.

They've been making a mobile MMORTS for around 3+ years now, so that plausibly might be ready to show as well, and it would probably get its own key art character the same way World of Warcraft and Hearthstone have separate characters.

Too early for Diablo 4, im betting D2 remastered & maybe a D3 expansion. Demon Hunter skin makes me think D3 Xpac.

Considering the amount of stuff that has been happening with the Diablo franchise as Nirolak has outlined above, there is no way that all this effort is just for a remaster

Instead, it makes sense that they will announce both, with D4 launching next year or so and the D2 HD remaster/remake much sooner

Yeah I think it's D1/2/both remasters, the mobile RTS thing (to Clash of Clans what Hearthstone was to Magic) and the usual stuff (OW maps, character, HOTS character, WoW patch, etc) this year, then next year is a new Diablo game and maybe a new WoW expansion, though the way the current one is going it doesn't look like the 24 month cycle is going to work for those. One of those would also probably be at Gamescom, since they seem to shy away from two huge announcements at BlizzCon.

It's been over 6 years and Blizzard tends to announce big new games ~1.5 years out from release.

Were you expecting the game to not release until 2021?
Well a D4 soon would be amazing, but D2 came out in 2000, D3 announced in 2008 & finally released in 2012, Blizzard could keep us waiting for a long time again, especially since the heads of the D3 team left Blizzard after Reaper of Souls.
Where would another Diablo III expansion go to though? Or would they add a new class instead, like they had with Necromancer?

I would rather hope for a new game.
Tyrael mentions Skovos Isles, plus there is like 10 other areas we never saw in Diablo, D3 was suppose to have Xiansai & Ureh in the game also.

That's a great skin, but I can't justify paying $40 for it (and yes, it'd be all I want).

I suspect there will be outrage, just like there was Pink Mercy.

Man, as a long time Blizzard fan I am so excited! Never watched the entire show or bought a pass but man that skin is tempting. Do you get the mentioned items with the pass?

For the record, that figure is Diablo 1 Diablo, not D2 Diablo.

Diablo 1 is the only game where his back spikes, horns, and chest area are all white like that. Plus, you know, it says "classic Diablo" right in the goody box.

Only the digitals. I believe you can order the physical stuff and you get a discount on them if you buy the virtual ticket, or at least that's how it worked last year, announcement will be later today.

Honestly if you're interested in a few hours of the programming, it's worth it. Really well produced show, full archives, they put out some cool features before the show that are fun to watch that you get access to. Obviously you need to be a pretty massive Blizzard fan/player of 1+ of their games/have $40 of disposable income, but it's good shit.

D2 Remaster? More likely remake. D3 sold truck loads on consoles so a remaster wouldnt really work. Well it would but i doubt its a remaster. Either D2 remake or D4.

I would love a D4 since the D2 system doesnt really appeal to me, i'm one of those weird guys that actually enjoyed D3.

Who's the guy between Tychus and Saurfang? Looks like a brand new character for HOTS.

I don't really know much about D2, but is there any reason they couldn't 'just' drop the D1/D2 maps, story, etc into the D3 engine as a free/cheap update? Obviously would need to make a bunch of new models and junk, but I agree it seems more likely than a straight remaster if they want to sell it on consoles.

Raven Lord, he's from the HOTS comics/one of the maps.

Diablo 1 Diablo doesn't have a tail though

Correct, but all they did was add a tail. But that figurine is actually one of the model they used for the darkening of tristram in game anniversary event.

The figure is intended to be D1 Diablo. The tail being added is most likely just a design update to keep him in line with every other appearance he has ever made.

The Raven Lord.

He's an announcer on two of the maps and got a design in one of the comics.

There's been some hints they're considering original characters being added to Heroes, this demon girl he summons is already in the game files, and they've noted they have some really big plans for Blizzcon, so I suspect he's being added along with something unusual (maybe story missions?).

Oh... I was thinking that Sombra would be in Diablo 3 as a Demon Hunter skin.

Got my hopes up and everything :(

The Diablo stuff is funny because there's absolutely no consistency between any of his depictions. The keyart Diablo looks different from any game, the classic vinyl figure looks like the re-imagining of Diablo 1 inside Diablo 3, and D1/D2/D3/HotS all have a different Diablo.

Between that and the demon hunter skin, there's nothing to discern.

Who knows what will happen?

An MMORTS? What an amazing idea. Seriously. I hadn't heard these rumors. Now I'm off to go investigate!

I was super interested in their new mobile offerings, but HS has soured me a lot on it. Hopefully we get something closer to OW or even WoW business model there, but it doesn't seem likely.

Sombra skin looks nice but I really like the look of the previous years skins. Was really hoping more characters would get them.
