Let's be real, how could you not pick Spider-Man. He's always the first draft pick. Even the new Tony popularity doesn't compare to Spider-Man and his rogues gallery of villains. Well there's a blanket X-Men, but even then, picking just one of the X-Men to be player controlled would be less, and making it so you can play multiple would just give the game less focus. Spider-Man is a perfect selection.

I love everything this studio produces, except for Fuse for obvious reasons. I would love to see another Resistance game in the future. Also a Ratchet sequel akin to A Crack in Time would be amazing as well.

Imagine if they had did the original Overstrike concept, and it was popular then Blizzard called Overwatch something else. History changed.

Man, like I get it, Spider-Man is my favorite super hero so I'd wanna work on it too, but it's hard not to imagine how it would have been for a different superhero to get a cool, high budget game for once.
This is what I find hard to believe...why Spiderman again (if you were really given the choice instead of Sony nudging you to do Spiderman because of its current resurgence back to huge popularity from the movies) when they've been so many (and more Spiderman games coming apparently). This doesn't mean I don't love the game though (it's a quality experience I can't stop playing around in the city), but I would've liked to see a big budget Iron Man game or something knowing how Insomniac are essentially gadget creating wizards based on the Ratchet and Clank games, and the stuff they could do with Iron Man's tech would only be a dream at the moment...

Ever since I discovered Ratchet & Clank on PS2, Insomniac has been one of my favorite developers in the business. I never owned a PS3 and don't have a PS4 yet so I've missed out on quite a few of their games but I'm looking forward to catching up and playing them one day. Since then, the next Insomniac game I played was Sunset Overdrive which was awesome. Great movement, awesome weapons, good humor, and just plain fun. Would really like a sequel someday. I also love the story of them and Spider-Man, and could not picture a better fit for the best superhero of all time than them. It looks friggin' incredible and I can't wait to play it.

That said, while this was fun to watch, I would love to see Jeff Gerstmann do an interview with Ted or someone from the studio at their E3 nites.

Echoing others, along with an inevitable Spider-Man 2, that I imagine will be for PS5, I hope they're also working on a fully new Rachet game thanks to the success of the reboot.

Insomniac CHOSE Spider-Man?
I knew they were the greatest.
Yup. Perfect choice too, fit Insomniac so perfectly as expected.

- They love making adventure games.
- Not interested in making fighting or racing games.
Excellent, I love my Insomniac action adventure games.

Ted Price always looked like a truly nice and honest guy. It's a pleasure to hear what he has to say.
Yeah.

That acquisition part is very interesting.

It reads like he is hinting at something. Like, at least it seems they have been in talk with Sony about it.

Wow good developer relationships do go a long way! Interesting!

And Ted price is a boss level headed and professional

Insomniac was rated previously as one of the best places to work in the past while ea and others were worst

He understands like other awesome developers how retaining a talented group of people means treating them well and for a long time

Most surprising is Marvel let them choose what hero.

It's such a weird story that Marvel didn't have any issues with any property they had and they let Sony go pick any studio and they would have let that studio pick the hero they wanted.

I always wonder what turn of events would have been if Sony had asked a different studio for a game what we might have gotten

Marvel do mention insomniac studio to Sony as an example of developer they want to work with. Although Marvel do put a huge amount of trust to Sony for that matter.

But it's not like Disney have anything to lose. They didn't fund the game themselves. They're actually getting paid whether Spider-Man succeed or fail. Sony is the one who have to pay everything from the licensing fee to Disney and the game development.

If it wasn't about the movie deal of whatever, how the hell did Sony convinced Marvel to have a game exclusively for the PS4?

Yeah, Ted ignored part of IGN's question of a new R&C game coming out. So they are obviously developing a new R&C game right now. However we don't know if it's a main title or one of those spinoff ones like All4One.

I really liked resistance 1. definitely an oft-forgotten gem.
I'd love a remake, but only on the condition they keep the same method of delivering the narrative. Sure, voiceovers may seem a touch old-fashioned, but the RFOM voiceovers really sold and nailed the storyline. Was so disappointed they jibbed it for R2.

That makes it even more surprising that Marvel was the one who approached Sony.
I see the logic.

From interviews they basically "wanted marvels Arkham". They wanted a big prestige title to kick off the new era of Marvel games and who better to go then maybe the most consistently high quality AAA publisher around with Sony.

And Since they also have other deals with other publishers they are not locking themselves into a corner like Star Wars and EA.

Okay that makes sense. Since they're working with multiple publishers, I wonder if there's a possibility of a gaming universe akin to the MCU?

Sunset Overdrive is their IP right? And if I'm not mistaken MS has right of first refusal? I imagine after Spiderman MS will be willing to give SO another shot or Insomniac can take it to another publisher.

Really cool interview. More Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank for PlayStation is all I want. =)

Read about it. It was Marvel who came to Sony asking for a game.
That makes it even more surprising that Marvel was the one who approached Sony.
Sony's Scott Rhode talked about it at E3. Marvel approached Sony, because they were impressed by Sony's first-party games. Marvel came up with the idea that Sony could treat one of Marvel's IPs like a Sony first-party game. And in the end that's exactly what happened with Spider-Man on the PS4. Win-win for both sides.

It's awesome to see that even huge companies like Marvel and Disney are really impressed with Sony's first party games and studios. Even Insomniac's creative director [super cool guy by the way] metions that:
'We've worked with Sony for 20 plus years, right? As excited as I was to work with Marvel, I was just as excited to be working with Sony again. I am so impressed and in awe of what their first party studios do: look at Guerrilla, what they did with Horizon Zero Dawn. Obviously, Naughty Dog is in town and we have a long friendship with them. I am a gigantic God of War fan and I think what Cory Barlog and that team at Santa Monica are doing is amazing. And look at Sucker Punch and what they're doing with their new IP.

"We are one piece of the juggernaut and I'm proud to be part of that juggernaut. For me we need to be at the quality and deliver at the level those other exclusive games have done.'

He really should be proud =) Spider-Man is fantastic and it's just like Ted Price said 'The Marvel, Sony, Insomniac triangle is amazing' !

Huh. So with the success of Spidey, I can imagine Disney wanting to let Sony make more games for them. Would suck for non PS users, but it surely would make some amazing games possible. Interested in how it plays out.
Marvel about Spider-Man and PlayStation:
'The future of the Spider-Man games is with Sony and Insomniac. We're delighted about this partnership, and that's something that's going to continue forward.'

It's worth remembering that Marvel Games has less of a leverage than one would think. As someone who wants AAA-level Arkham games, but isn't willing to fund the games directly - they have to find partners who are willing to make it, and Spidey is their first big rodeo. The fact that they said "pick who you want" to Sony/Insomniac means a lot. It does means that they aren't trying to be a control-freak for their first big attempt/outing.

Just because spider-man sold well doesn't mean that SO2 will sell well. Obviously MS shouldn't worry about that and be more like Sony where they know some games won't be outright mega hits and just make them, but I imagine that for the cost of making an almost AAA game in SO2, they'd want to big turn around (like Sony uses their big AAA games to make profits that end up funding the smaller games that don't end up as mega hits, this gen at least MS doesn't have that luxury).

Guardians of the Galaxy by Naughty Dog PS5 exclusive confirmed.

Even partnering up again, as I've said previously, I doubt Sony would use their own stable to make the games as it'd be taking up one exclusive slot for them and instead they'd give it to a partner they could manage like a first party studio and get something akin to first party quality.

I do wonder if they have SE the same kind of freedom or if they went to them with the specific avengers in mind.

Yeah this makes a lot of sense.

I wonder how the profit-split is here and how big Marvels cut is.

The real fun is trying to pair partner studios with good marvel ips

It wouldn't be AAA, but a Luke Cage game made by drinkbox in the same vein as guacamelee would make me smile uncontrollably.

Too bad atlus isn't independent cause I would love to see an X-Men game in the persona style where you play a new mutant at the Xavier school for the gifted trying to live their day to day life and having to fight crime on the side

Platinum with Deadpool is kinda obvious.

There aren't that many independent studios that could do full on AAA games though, but an opportunity like this would be a chance to grow a AA studio a lot

Makes more sense as a PS5 launch title imo. Perfect for that really.

I don't think so. Insomniac is a pretty fast and efficient developer, it's unlikely that they'll release just one VR game in the next 2 years.
And once the development of the game is done, there's no reason to hold it back for the launch of PS5.

The PS5 will surely get its system seller for the launch, but with Ratchet and Clank it makes sense to release the game for the big PS4 audience, who only got one Ratchet & Clank game so far. Insomniac and Sony have reported that R&C (2016) is Insomniac's best-selling game (pre Spider-Man) and that it is the first R&C game for many of the players. It makes sense to give these players a second game on the PS4 to make them invested in the franchise.
In addition, BC will make the game playable on the PS5 anyway.

Iron Man is the logical evolution of the R&C Gameplay formula if you think about it...

I see you, fam.

Downloaded the audio so I can listen on my commute. For anyone curious, Ted is a super nice guy :)

Also, I'll take any opportunity I can get to give a shout out to Resistance and how much I would love another quality title or remaster

Marvel is in licensing business now, I assume Marvel approach many publisher for this, asking if they want to license any Marvel character for a games. Sony and Square Enix jumped in. Squenix may actually get the bigger IP too. it's Avengers with many characters in it, including Spider-Man.

I think the point was to make a proper Spider-Man game compared to when Activision had the license for the IP. Marvel wanted Sony to create a proper Marvel game with the "white glove" treatment of a Sony 1P studio. Insomniac chose Spider-Man since that works best for their current engine/system. Spider-Man is also the most popular comic/Marvel IP, so they are just doing the game justice that it deserves. You might be tired of it, but certainly a lot of people have been craving a properly done Spider-Man game. Its similar to the Star Wars license with EA. I would imagine a lot of people would like that license to go elsewhere to be away from EA.
