My thoughts:
You can vault over enemies. Its so good. If you vault while having EX Gauge you can pull off a badass heat move (its an "EX Attack" but its blatantly just a heat move!).

Other think I noticed in the final battle was what looked like a juggle combo attack move in the power/red stance. Didn't get to do it more than once though. Couldn't figure out how to do the wall moves either. I'm liking it so far and wish I could have done more fights to see what else you could do.

Looking at the map - playspots seem numerous. Club Sega is enterable (though not in the demo) and will probably hold the VR games shown? (I assume we might get another classic Sega game as well, should know when TGS starts and we get a better look).

Also back is a huge playspot where the bowling alley/Rizap was. Not sure what it is in this though.

I forget who mentioned it ages ago in another Yakuza thread, but you can map healing items to the D Pad now so can quick heal in and out of combat by pressing the d pad.

Honestly the only thing that didn't feel great in the demo was the tailing bit. Because whether I play this, Assassins Creed, Spidey, Infamous or Gravity Rush, I've never played a tailing bit that didn't kinda bore me. Hopefully those aren't too numerous.

Oh, and chases are basically QTEs to the Shenmue level now. So much better than how bad they are in Yakuza 3. Fantastic change.

I loved the intro in the game as well (which is played after you finish the demo). Super detailed look at the characters, hope this plays on boot up on the full game.

Also, plot wise (6/Shin spoilers);

Since this is in the Yakuza universe I wonder if we get some hints as to what happens/happened to the Tojo Clan seeing as by the time Ichiban hits the scene the betrayals will have happened. Heck, one post credits scene could go full MCU and just be a direct teaser for Shin RGG.

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow!!!! I'm so down for this. I didn't even know there was a PlayStation show ahead of TGS today, so I thought we might not see any announcements before TGS. And it's already been announced for the west, has a demo in Japan (will check it out later) and the story trailer already features Japanese subtitles? Based Sega!!! What a time to be alive, that a game by the Yakuza team gets announced for the west on the same day it gets announced for Japan.

I've only seen the story trailer so far, but I'm completely down for this. Sure, it's yet again a game in Kamurocho (they already have a lot of the assests, so that cuts down development time I guess) but I don't mind, after all Kamurocho is already something like a second home after all those years, lol. And since it takes play in the same universe the Yakuza games take place, I'm really curious to see if it might lead into Shin Ryu ga Gotoku and might even have callbacks to other Yakuza games (perhaps in the form of easter eggs). They got Takuya Kimura for the main character, which is a huuuuuuuge deal in Japan. That game will sell like hot cakes just because of him, I'm pretty sure.

That gameplay trailer looks very nice. I also only saw the story trailer (from that TGS thread earlier) and thought it was a Lawyer going to court or something. Boy was i way off!

That seems to be the playspot that holds the VR games. It's called VR Salon Paradise. Also, there is a new playspot within the Millenium Tower for drone racing.
Yeah, I checked all the spots when I tried the demo again. Cool that we get a dedicated VR playspot, I was worried that it'd be Club Sega (which is also still present). So I just hope we get new arcade games as well.

Oh, and Mahjong is back. I can rest easy now!

I wonder if the wider audience that has begun to get interested in Yakuza since 0 will begin to feel Kamurocho fatigue, or Yakuza formula fatigue in general. I mean I include myself in that since I started with 0, but I think some people won't be as tolerant of the asset and location reuse than I have been.

I'm guessing this is a way to tell a different kind of story the team wanted to tell within the constraints of a small budget. When is Sega going to give them a large budget to go nuts on a project?

It's quite brilliant what RGG Studio is doing. That is, making as many viable points of entry for newcomers as possible.
  • Yakuza 0: Prequel to the entire Yakuza series, best place for a newcomer to start.
  • Yakuza Kiwami: Remake of the very first game in the series, also a good starting point.
  • Fist of the North Star: The same voice actors and game design as the Yakuza series, but without any of the associated story baggage.
  • Shin Ryu Ga Gotoku: Represents a new beginning, with a new protagonist. Also most likely a great place for a new player to start.
  • Judge Eyes: Technically appears to be a Yakuza spinoff at the moment, but about lawyers instead, with an entirely new cast of characters. A brand new story with only minor ties to the mainline series.
They know it can be intimidating to see all the Yakuza games and not know where to begin, and so they basically say "you can start with almost any of our most recent games". They know what they're doing.

I'd love a games journalist to ask Nagoshi if Yakuza 0 was part of a plan to expand the audience of Yakuza, or if all the stars just aligned and it had somewhat fortuitous success due to factors we've discussed before (finally a great starting point on a current gen system, required no previous knowledge of the series, had a surprise word-of-mouth buzz in the West that spread, got some extra hype as it was discussed as part of the great Japanese game invasion of early 2017).

I'm also wondering what their target audience is for Judge Eyes. With Yakuza, it was Japanese men. Who generally watches the lawyer TV dramas in Japan?

On the fourth chapter of the first *Kiwami* game and I was wondering if there were any recommended side-quests to tackle before moving primarily through the main story-line. Already tackled the two Cabaret quests and maxed out the 'Majima Everywhere' encounters for the time being. I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions!

I'd say give the Pocket Circuit sidequests a try, especially if you finished all of them in 0. There's some neat callbacks in the Kiwami versions.

There's a 51 minute presentation about Project Judge from earlier today dubbed in English-

It's cool that Sega is putting a large amount of effort behind this team's games lately when it comes to localizations. This was unveiled today, they said it would be coming to the west and they put up the subtitled trailer. With Kiwami 2 out recently, Fist of the North Star next month (both of which had english demo's), the PS4 ports of 3, 4 & 5 supposedly coming here and the recent PC ports, all we need is Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin! localized (it was hinted at in a recent survey)!

I booted up Yakuza 0 tonight. It's been over a year since release and I still haven't finished the businesses or all the side quests, just taking it slow. Anyway, every time I play this game I notice something new about the city. Tonight I noticed for the first time that above the Sega arcade in Theater Square there's two glass elevators that go up and down to random floors. At nice they look really nice. They have people in them, though they seem to be 2D sprites that never leave, probably for performance reasons. Wonder if they're easter eggs? The details of this city never ceases to amaze me. I still can't believe how many intricate neon sign animations they made, either.

Considering it took like 2 years to get over here I'd say I highly doubt it. I think it was just a happy accident of Yakuza simply being in the right place at the right time.

Oh cool, there's a mini story trailer at the end of this presentation that features stuff not in the previous trailers.

I don't like the use of the guy fawkes mask though.

EX moves (which I will refer to as heat moves because I'm too lazy to learn a new term) in Judge Eyes:

Some people mentioned many of these are recycled, I've played the series a shit ton and don't recognise quite a few of them so who knows. Among the new moves (for sure) is another new Dragon Engine move which allows you to smash people through openable doors (like Cafe Alps). This is really cool :)

Played the demo and really enjoyed it. The map is filled with stores you can enter, so I'm very much looking forward to explore present day Kamurocho with someone entirely new. During the chase sequence you run through an area that got hit "quite badly" in Yakuza 6 and they're still rebuilding it, which is a nice touch. Haven't experimented too much with the EX moves etc. yet, but hearing that you can smash people through openable doors is actually quite cool. Have to try that out for sure.

I'm quite excited for this game. It's different enough in detail to not just be "Yakuza but without the Yakuza name". It definitely carries the Yakuza DNA. Is it something entirely new like Nagoshi announced? Not really. But it's different enough to not call it "Ryu ga Gotoku" I think. The ending sequence of the demo is so much like in a J-Drama, I love it. I mean that's clearly what they're going for here, if Takuya Kimura wasn't already a good indicator for that. I'm still amazed by the fact that they already announced it for the west. I feel like we're one step closer to a future worldwide release of a Ryu ga Gotoku studio game. Maybe even for Shin Ryu ga Gotoku. Either way: I'm very much thankful that they already announced it for the west. Very much looking forward to it!

About Yakuza 0 and the Real Estate stuff,

I just started the "Finale" chapter of the game. I'm with Kiryu in Kamurocho right after Sera informs Kiryu that he should get out of town. I need to talk to Nishikiyama to trigger the next critical path story.

Is this basically the point of no return? I'd like to advance the Real Estate story as much as possible before finishing the game since Kiryu is still woefully underleveled compared to Majima and I don't think I'll have a chance to send Kiryu money since Majima's story seems almost over

anyone interested in "Exclusive Access to the Yakuza Kamurocho District 360 Site?"

gamestop sent me a code for buying a sega game (pre-owned copy of shinobi 3D)

I doubt I'll be getting around to yakuza 6 anytime soon.

About Yakuza 0 and the Real Estate stuff,

There's a mode after you finish the story called Premium Adventure where you can continue doing all the side quests, minigames, and businesses after the narrative is complete. You can also freely switch between characters, and even choose what time of day to walk around in. You basically create a special save file and then continue from there.

Jon from the localization team just posted this

Add the early localization confirmation and could this mean Project Judge may be the first Yakuza-related game to be localized during the game's development? Would be huge if so.

Yeah, the soundtrack is nice so far. Looks like this'll be another game I listen to loads when not playing it!

I forget when we got the announcement for Yakuza 1, but other than that, yeah this seems to be the first time. The only other one was 6, which got announced the week before it was released in Japan if that counts? And its certainly a great achievement for the team. Gimme those remasters as well ;)

An absolutely great accomplishment and a buttload of work. I can't praise him and his team enough. If they really translate Judge Eyes while it's still in development, that would be absolutely incredible and definitely a big, big step. I mean we already got the western release announcement on the same day they announced it for Japan / Asia, that was already a huge step. All the power to them!

Thanks man. I might do that to finish up the Real Estate story, though luckily I can still roam Kamurocho after beating
Kuze for the nth time, and he was pretty challenging this time
.

I really really should've done the Real Estate Stuff much earlier. It's clearly designed to be done between stories while the collection money accumulates. I'd have a fully powered Kiryu by now which would be much more fun since the combat is my favorite part of the game.

I really don't know how the developers managed to make the heat moves so cool that I don't get tired of the animation even after watching it for the 100th time.

So Yakuza 0 is in the books. Took me 65 hours, and only got 41% completion.

I have a lot of thoughts about the game right now, but my impression is overwhelmingly positive.

KIRYU-CHAAN

Maybe playing Kiwami first wasn't such a bad idea after all.

I don't know, IMO focusing too much on the side businesses decreases the narrative momentum. I'm enjoying doing the business at my leisure in Premium Adventure mode. The good thing about the combat is there's still the underground fighting you can continue, and of course plenty of thugs to fight.

The only thing that I wish they would've done on Premium Adventure is to let Bar Serena stay open to go have a drink in.

I still think playing Kiwami second is best, as the character development really informs the player's perspective and emotional connection with the characters in Kiwami. But it is sort of a let down coming off the amazing heights of Zero.

Yeah, I agree playing 0 first is better for almost everything. But that very final scene is definitely one you'll only appreciate if you've at least played one of the other Yakuza games first. I'd not realised until the end of the game that
Majima and Kiryu never actually met. You go looking for him as Majima late in the game but you end up fighting Nishiki instead! It was actually quite refreshing that they managed to tell a story without the usual team up trope popping up. It made that final scene all the sweeter for me.

0 was (Like many) the first game in the Yakuza series.

After finishing 0 earlier in the year and coming towards the end of Kiwami I can safely say it has become one of my favorite series of games ever.
I'd put 0 over Kiwami but I've still loved every moment of it!

Looking forward to jumping into Kiwami 2 after finishing Spider-Man.
