Hmm... that is a can of worms.
My first reaction to this casting choice is that it makes a lot of sense in terms of conveying the way the people of that world see race/ethnicity to cast Nilfgaard as visibly another race. In medieval Europe there was no concept of "whiteness" as such, so somebody from 1000 miles away would be perceived in much the same way modern people perceive race. Sure, they may have had white skin, but in a world (like medieval northern Poland) where most people would never meet anyone who wasn't white, race was understood more through the prism of language and nationality.
So making them non-white makes sense, and it helps us to understand how Ciri might feel and be perceived as a foreigner in the northern kingdoms. BUT you do raise a good point that casting the evil empire as non-white could be very problematic. That does give me pause.
The internet shit-fit about this is ridiculous. None of it comes down to anything argument more sophisticated than "This isn't the version of the character I'm used to" or "isn't diversity the REAL racism?"

My girlfriend is wary of traveling places with zero black people because she doesn't like getting stared at, so when discussing possible European travel plans we actually looked up how many black people live in Poland.

The best estimate we could get was that there were less than 100 black permanent residents in the entire country. So yeah, it's white as fuck.
But those calling for a Polish production, there was already a Polish Witcher TV show and it was terrible, so let's give the Americans a chance ;)

Personally i think it does not fit the lore made in the books and the game, but i dont mind and will watch the show for sure, im really hyped and cant wait for it to launch.

you can disagree with the decision, but those that I've seen banned couldnt help themselves and reveal the racism once they ran out of ways to tread through eggshells at why they disagreed with it. Up to you how far you want to get into it.

I've only read a handful of the comments but threads like this are a bad idea. I don't think we need to discuss whether or not a character is black or white in 2018. Era, you are better than this.
they always read to me like a checklist where I have to find what they mean by reading the post. Honestly sometimes I read both the band and the post and they leave me with a "thats it?" but whatever.
I assume the other poster didnt find them clear because he was clearly asking for clarification as to why they were getting banned.
Hundreds of users have disagreed with it and never got banned or accused of racism.
I myself know middle eastern Witcher fans who'd like to see Ciri stay white, there's nothing racist about that.
People have been banned here for using racist loaded terms like blackwashing, claiming that women of color should never play princesses, denying that racism exists in the west and Europe and arguing with false equivalent examples.
There isn't a single person in this thread who has been banned unjustly.
I do not see anything in this that said that he's okay with changing his initial descriptions. I'm quite certain that the Witcher world was intended as diverse, but that quote does not really prove anything.
Anyway I'm just waiting for meltdowns when Ciri turns out actually white or Middle Eastern or played by a gay actress. I feel like people just think of her as black at this point which, in my opinion, will be hard to pull off.

I really wish they would own their biases, show some humility, and stop trying to use historical/text accuracy adherence and immersion preservation as convenient excuses to keep things perfectly comfortable... People will now dismiss the author and his belief that the world of The Witchers is "big and diverse —in its population, in every way (race, culture, gender, and yes, occasionally skin color, which he said he did not always specify)" and a person who had personal first hand interactions with the author.
Don't get what the big deal is. Glad to see Netflix changing things up a bit. It's clear from playing the game that the Witcher is completely whitewashed so I'm glad they're going to be more inclusive.

I'm not sure it's clear, but the woman whose tweets I quoted is Lauren Hissrich, The Witcher's show runner, so support for this comes pretty much from the top no matter how you slice it.
It's just silly to have a problem with this casting especially when it is being cast by people so clearly appreciative and loving of the source material but want to interpret it how they see fit. I grew up a Latino sitting through the boys around me worshiping characters like Tony Montana/Scarface played by an Italian guy and I now have to sit TODAY and watch them and people like them publically object and throw a fit to any time the same situation is reversed and a POC is cast in role they are certain must be played by a Caucasian. I just don't get it.

There are many rural places in Eastern Europe where the locals haven't seen a non-white person for their entire lives, from their perspective they are just fictional characters in western TV shows and movies.

Typically, I've found that shows that force diversity tend to focus so much on it that the quality drops. We'll see how the show turns out.

There's a reason why there was so much "thunder" around Wonder Woman and Black Panther... LITERALLY these films are a goddamn UNICORN among the lot of otherwise same male-hero fantasies.
FOR SO MANY YEARS do we have to sit back and let everyone else (really, one type of person) be the hero, and we gotta fight tooth, nail, and against some COMPLETELY unsympathetic rhetoric that this shit is ""forced"" as if the other million shows with males/whites leading aren't enough.

The recent Star Wars movies are big examples. Ghostbusters is another one. Ocean's 8. Basically movies that bring diversity to the front and centre instead of the actual movie.

Can you explain why the diversity was bad, or why that hurt the movies in question? I agree Ghostbusters 2016 wasn't a great movie, but I feel like that was more direction problems then casting.

Ocean's 8 was great, Ghostbusters had a male-majority writing team, and Star Wars still made crazy bank.

if you think the newer Ghostbusters was anywhere close as good as the original than we gotta sit down and watch the original again (same with TLJ and in this case the second movie in the original trilogy to make it equal Episode V)
I think it was considerably better. I don't think the original is good, and I think people who believe so are strongly affected by nostalgia. That doesn't make the new GB a great movie, but at least it wasn't as bad as the progenitor.
gotta disagree, I didnt even really grow up on Ghostbusters and think its a great watch. The new movie is nothing but a shell of its former self by comparison. if that.

The creation of a TV show from a game (that was a book) that was also immensely popular with the folks of this ....gaming forum.

The show is based on the books not the video games. Star Wars is also very popular in gaming yet I doubt we'll hear casting call news of the next SW movie here.

I´m not racist, but well, if you are fan from Books, you expect the series being the most accurate possible, Ciri is very white on the books so this is not accurate.
I would be equally angry if they does a new Street Fighter Movie, and Ryu is white or black. Ryu is Japanese on the game, so a asian guy should be Ryu on a movie.
On 2018 internet and people are so shitty that fans angry with this stupid decisions are categorized as racist. People who see racism on all debates, probably are more racist than the people they are judging like racist.
