Already on backlog:
Observer
Inside
The Evil Within 2
The Invisible Hours (PSVR)
Aliens: Infestation (DS) (in the backlog for years... I wonder if this is the right year)

To buy soon:
Transference (PSVR)
Outlast Trinity
Yomawari: Night Alone (and maybe its PS4 sequel)
Prey
The White Day
Dying Light

and probably several digital-only indie games they'll have in the halloween sale on PSN.

The bad thing this year, however, is that after playing RE7 on PSVR every other horror/creepy non-vr game seems very tame in comparison...

Like every Year I'm gonna replay a game from the Fatal Frame Series.
This year it's going to be Fatal Frame 4, the reason why my Wii is still hooked up to my TV.
I wish Nintendo would bring the games to the Switch
And probably the two Yomowari Games.

Same wishing some FF Switch ports. I'm tempted to hunt some of these down on PS2 except for the fact that I'd pay collector prices.

Friday 13th on the NES is my forever scary game. I don't know what it is about it! It used to terrify me and it still does. Just makes me jump.

I'm intending to finally try Outlast 2.

My youngest daughter and I play through that game every Fall — absolutely adore it (both the game and especially our tradition).

That's so heartwarming! I'd love for my wife to sit down and play it with me. We tried a couple of years ago but she was too bad at the game and it was taking us too long. =[
Maybe we'll make ourselves some pumpkin coffee once the leaves have started turning and playthrough the first one over a couple of days, and then we can tackle Costume Quest 2 on Halloween night.

I'll fire up PT as I do every October because it's still one of the spookiest things I've played in a long time.

Other than that I'm thinking of playing some of my backlog rather than replaying anything:
Observer
Outlast 2
Detention

I really would like to fire up The Evil Within as well but I'm just now finishing up GoW and want to play some shorter games before I start up another long one.

Man I really hated this game. Great art style, but everything else, yeeesh.

Really? For me it had been a while since I played a game that cribbed so hard from old-school Alone in the Dark gameplay, but once I got back into the groove (mainly with switching camera angles in each room) I found it to be plenty enjoyable.

I'll always recommend the works of Kitty Horrorshow: https://kittyhorrorshow.itch.io/
First-person exploratory horror games without any real jumpscares, most of which are available for free. Both "Haunted Cities" collections are very much worth grabbing, I in particular have very fond memories of playing "Leechbowl" and "Scarlet Bough" with a couple friends, those ones have really stuck with me.

Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill Homecoming (i know, i know... but there's some good boss fights)

FEAR
Grabbed by Ghoulies

Friday the 13th is frustrating and fun in a weird way. It has some good ideas in there that are hampered by the tech of the NES and it is terrifying when you're just poking around a cabin and then Jason just appears out of nowhere.

Out of curiosity, has there been any (good) horror games released on consoles this year? Outside of the two upcoming Cthulhu games and Vampyr, I feel like I haven't read about many good horror games this year. Specifically speaking about the PS4

Unless I'm just out of the loop?

For a SNES game, it's almost insane how they nailed the whole concept.
One of my all time favourites, too bad the sequels just outright suck.

I think the save system combined with insta-death ghost attacks, and an overall boring game just made it not for me. Pretty sure I remember quite a few shitty cheap deaths. Also when I think about the game now, the opening sequence really stands out. They make you limp around barely moving for like 10 minutes, I don't know why developers ever think this is a good idea. I'm at the point now where if I start a game and the main character is injured/clutching their stomach/limping around slowly I just turn it off. If any developers are reading this, please knock it off, that shit sucks, just make it a cutscene.

Yoooo thank you for this. Review meltdown threads aside, I really come to Era for solid recommendations like this. There's a "spooky proteus" aesthetic here that I really dig. Downloading a few now.

I mean, I grew up on games where this was the norm so it doesn't bother me as long as the story seems interesting, which it was for me. I get that it wasn't your cup of tea though, which is fine too.

Yeah, those are definitely not my favorite.

Costume Quest isn't very spooky but it has the best feeling of autumn/halloween that I have ever experienced. Gonna replay it soon.

Also, Night in the Woods is great for this time of year!

Been playing Dead by Daylight with friends lately so I imagine that will continue to October and the Overwatch Halloween event is always fun.

Outlast 2 is fucking terrifying, imo. The gameplay segments get a little rough at points but I was genuinely disturbed and creeped the hell out for a lot of the game, which is worth a lot to me.

I guess now would be a good time to wrap up Luigi's Mansion and to buckle down and beat Resident Evil. I don't know what it is about these mansion games, but I completely forget what I'm doing and get bored then try to start up again and I'm like "well, I might as well start over completely because I'll never get back on track." Like a decade later and I'm still trying to beat Luigi's Mansion. Maybe that's the real spook.

I've got a copy of Alien: Isolation that I need to play so I'll probably give that a shot. Also have an itch to replay F.E.A.R. and the first Condemned so I'll probably do that over October.

Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice is one of the creepiest games I've played in a LONG time.

I'm also playing Dead Space on Xbox One X through BC, and I plan to jump into RE1 on PS4 in a few weeks.

Naughty Bear: Panic In Paradise (ps360) might not be very scary but it's a surprisingly fun slasher villain game.
It's basically the player as the Jason/Michael Myers type, stalking and performing all kinds of different kills on unsuspecting teddy bears. A very underrated and seldom talked about game, it's actually a little similar to Hitman.
considering how much I play DBD I should give this one a try.

This year I'm only going to revisit stuff I already have, but I have yet to whittle the list down:

Rule of Rose (PS2)
Haunting Ground (PS2)
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (PS2)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1)
Nightmare Creatures (PS1)
The Evil Within (PS4)
Zombi (PS4)
Zombie Army Trilogy (PS4)
Night Trap (PS4)

That's a pretty good list and there's no way I'd get through all of that even if I took the month off from work, so I'm going to have to cut it down to like 2 or 3, I think.

I'm also going to play some online games because I refuse to miss out on the seasonal fun:

Killing Floor 2 (Halloween event begins soon! PS4/Xbox/PC)
Friday the 13th
Dead by Daylight

Gotta be Costume Quest 1 +2. Playing them through on Halloween has become a yearly tradition.
Where is the third one Double Fine? Or a remaster of the first two?

Also Friday the 13th and Dead By Daylight are fun as hell online.
Bully for the Halloween segment.
Biohazard ReMake
Biohazard 4
and Left 4 dead 1 + 2.
Where is the third one Valve?

Really want to grab SOMA on X1 in time for Halloween. Can't afford it right now even though it's on sale. Hopefully it'll be again by that time or I'll just pay full price if I can.

Anyone have horror recommendation for Switch?
I really like Resident Evil Revelations 2. Great atmosphere. Kind of has a little bit of a SAW thing going on, which is not what I expected from an RE game. Good mystery to the story as well.

I'd also like to endorse Night Trap. I think it gets a lot of crap for the game it was in the early 90s and not enough people understand how much more playable the 25th anniversary edition is. Some great enhancements were made that give the player so much more control and understanding of the overall picture. Plus if you're into cheesy 80s horror that kind of feels like an old sitcom, this nails it because it WAS filmed in the late 80s! Its not the typical thing where its somebody's version of what they think the 80s were like. It IS the 80s.

I don't have a lot of gaming time these days, really only play a game sporadically here or there, but I think it's time to finally open and play Until Dawn.

I'm hoping to dip into if not finish some of these this year: (hopefully I can get some friends to play along with too)

The Forest
Darkwood
Condemned Criminal Origins
Silent Hill 4: The Room
SOMA
Detention
Resident Evil 2 (to prepare for REmake)
Subnautica (this apparently can get quite tense so I'm intrigued)

Resident Evil 4 is awesome to play around Halloween. I usually just run through the village segment, but it doesn't really get old.

Castlevania and Devil May Cry are other series I like to play around this time. I think I replay at least one CV game every year.

This year I might finally play Until Dawn and RE7.

Not really planning anything seriously spooky but here's what I'm considering:

Doom 2016 (still haven't played this yet and it seems like a good time for it with Eternal coming)
Heretic: Shadows of the Serpent Riders (Old school DOOM Gothic reskin by Raven Software which I'd only played parts of the shareware episode as a kid)
Diablo 1 (assuming I can get it to run, never got a chance to play it back in the day but I love the sequel)
An IGAVania: Symphony of the Night or Dawn of Sorrow (haven't played SotN and have yet to play the DS games)
Luigi's Mansion (Never played this on GCN so I'm looking forward to possibly checking it out on 3DS)

Something was lost in the sequel. If the first game was a 9, the second was like a 6. I only replay the first game lol

Agreed. Did Costume Quest, Grubbins on Ice, and CQ2 over the last three years in October and the first game is definitely the highlight.

I'd also toss Night in the Woods into the mix although that's far less a Halloween story and more Fall in general.

Luigi's Mansion is super short but so good. My second playthrough I beat it in one sitting. Get it played!
