It's one of those films that I love but cannot watch very often. It's haunting and traumatizing and definitely left a psychic stain on me. I always look at it when I'm browsing through my Plex collection and go right past it because I have to be in a very specific mood to watch it.

I definitely want to read the book to compare.

It had some radical ideas about gender that are so far over the verge nothing else really applies.

I love the negative responses too, they fascinate me.

I think of each experience watching it like doing acid, should get in a safe place where you trust your environment and can deal with the movie because there is a lot to deal with.

Easily one of the creepier and more disturbing movies I've ever seen.
The visuals, sound, theme, and the idea of man becoming such easy prey for the alien flytrap.

I've been a fan of Mica Levi for years so I'd listened to the soundtrack countless times but hadn't seen the film itself until it went up on Netflix. I went in (practically) blind and was left transfixed for the entire duration. It's one of those films that instantly gels with my sensibilities and conjures that sensation of reliving hazy yet haunting memories rather than experiencing a deliberate narrative from afar. I need to grab the Blu-ray and check out Glazer's other work.

It's a more traditional film but I remember Winter's Bone having a similar effect on me. Especially the dream sequence.

I read the book and the movie is much better in my opinion. He got rid of the alien backstory and just focused on the hitchhiking scenes. Visuals are amazing and Mica Levi delivered what can be now considered a classic movie score. Although the majority of the score is unsettling drones and that creepy string motif, the synth track Love is absolutely gorgeous.

A film hasn't stuck with me in such a deep disturbing way since Requiem for a Dream. I'm glad people love it and I'm glad some hate it. It is not for everyone but I would love to see more stuff like Under The Skin.

It is hard to recommend though which is too bad.

I didnt think it was all that strange. I always understood the basics of what was happening even if I couldn't understand the specifics.

Great movie though. It's definitely stuck with me.

I quite liked it. It has an interesting premise and really eerie presentation. Plus, it being set in Glasgow while I was there as a student made it feel all the more surreal.

Great film. It generates such an atmosphere of alienation and unease it's almost suffocating.

Props to Johanssen too her performance is a key part of that.

It'll never not be odd to see my city of birth through the lens of this film.

Novel is almost required reading if you like the film. It's different and of course ultimately able to go into way more depth than the relatively sparse film; but it's fascinating to see how each is a bariation on a theme and to see just what elements Glazer chose to channel given his available budget.

I don't think I enjoyed this movie, but I'm glad I watched it. What a weird thing it is.
I think my favorite part is when ScarJo gets complimented on her appearance and then afterwards the other aliens are studying her to figure out what the person was talking about. I do wish they had gotten to that stuff sooner as I felt the hitchhiking stuff went on a bit too long.

Woah. Assuming you're talking about the pickups.

Wait, then how did the director
made them appear naked with raging boners? I'd doubt total strangers (even Scottish ones) would agree to get totally naked and show off their willys

I think the guys in the black room are obviously actors but all of the rest of the cast are normal people unaware of the filming?

You can't put someone in a film without asking. So they asked the people in the truck afterwards if they wanted to go further. Even the guy at the end isn't an actor, but just the owner of that thing.

I saw it a few years ago, really liked it, but at this point absolutely cannot remember the second half of the film. The beach scene, the taxi driver stuff, sure, but the only scene I remember from the later part of the film is:

ScarJo sitting on the bed checking her vagina out with a lamp

:\

That scene on
the beach with the baby all alone
gutted me more than anything I've ever seen in recent memory. It still fucks me.
Yup, it's the reason I can't watch it again. It's such a little tiny thing in the overall scope of the movie but it has stuck with me, very painfully, ever since. It's traumatizing.

I saw this movie once, when it came out 4 years ago or whatever. I can't say I necessarily loved the experience of watching it and I would never recommend it to the vast majority of people, but I still think about it all the time. The score, the visuals, the utterly bizarre and creepy (truly alien) mood, etc. It left such a strong impression on me in a way that honestly only a handful of movies I've ever seen has. Definitely one of the most memorable films to come out this decade IMO.

Sometimes entertainment or art isn't there to entertain but just to subject you to new experiences and/or make you think about things

Sounds like this movie smashed that out the park for you

She didn't have one, she was checking out the absence with a lamp

But yeah I think the film gets a bit limp in the last parts, clearly failed to capture how the book progressed - but it's still great

The scenes in the van were candid, most of the guys didn't know it was being filmed.

Then if she managed to drive them back to the house, the production crew came out and I think they were briefed and asked if they wanted to proceed. I think the first couple of Black Room guys are real candid people. (Edit - sounds like I might be wrong about this)

This is absolutely wild. Had no idea this is what went down.
I Really didn't want to have to watch this movie again, haha, but I guess I'll have to just to get another perspective on this aspect.

The beach scene was too much for me, also having a baby at the time. The real life scenes are bit boring. The visual design great. It was interesting at least, but not something I'd watch again. Just, you know, certain parts.

I remember when this was filming in Glasgow and they were looking for extras to appear in the film and me and a few of my friends put our names forward. None of us got in - though after watching the film at release we were all quite glad, lol.

If you are up for watching an unsettling and disturbing Scottish film then check out Calibre on Netflix as well. Fu-king hell, that film is still stuck with me still, weeks later!

Very unique, unsettling, sad, and mesmerising film that I had no idea about before I watched.

Interested in the novel now I know the film had to take a some liberties due to budget etc... will read, so thanks for the thread OP!

I'm fairly certain this isn't true. All of the guys in the black room are actors.

IIRC that would only leave one dude who was candid?

Although looking at IMDB at least one of those guys was definitely an actor. Difficult to work out re the others

I definitely remembering hearing in an interview that the production crew would reveal themselves and ask if the men "wanted to proceed" or something along those lines. Maybe it meant just allow them to use the footage.

Really enjoyed this movie and how alien it felt to anything else I've ever watched. I just want to know more about the motorcycle guy.

Thankfully we dont have to wait another 10 years for the next Glazer project. He's announced he's doing a story on the Holocaust. I wonder if it'll be as arthouse-y as Birth and this, I hope so!

Fantastic movie, knew almost nothing about it going in, but don't think I could watch it again for a while (like Requiem for a Dream as another mentioned).

Man that was intense. The music really got to me when it kicked it. Loved the slower ominous pace of the movie also. The almost awkward feel of some of the scenes was great.

Such a weird experience. I didn't know how to feel about it when I first watched it a few years ago but I still randomly think about it regularly. And every time I think about it, I feel I appreciate it a bit more even though I don't ever want to watch it again.

Easily one of my favorite movies of all time. Like, probably in the top 3. I remember watching it when it was in limited release and it completely captivating me. I didn't think about anything else for days. I sometimes listen to the score at work while doing focus intensive tasks.

I like it better than the book it's based on for a variety of reasons, and I've rewatched it more than a handful of times since I originally saw it. One of my first blu-ray purchases. So glad more people are seeing it.

I saw this movie a few years ago, and, like a lot of you, it's stayed with me and pops into my consciousness every few months or so. It's an uneasy feeling. And if I spend too long thinking about it or remembering a scene, [book spoiler - I made the mistake of reading a synopsis online]
I lose all appetite for meat. It becomes temporarily repulsive to me. Can't eat it for a few days.

absolutely the most terrifying thing i've ever seen.
This scene will stay with me until the end of my life.

The most horrifying part was
the guy remaining. He reached out and touched the dude just before implosion. Seemed like he wanted to make a connection. But instead, he's left alone in that suspension, not knowing how much time he's got left but knowing how that time will end.

The best underrated movie that "no one" cared about. When I first watched it, it was sitting on my watchlist for almost a year and I only watched it because it came up in a conversation with someone who absolutely hated it.

Since then I recommended it to someone else and he too ended up hating it. I used to think it will end up being a cult classic (like The Fountain - anothet film with an amazing soundtrack) but I don't think that's the case anymore. I mean damn the film stars ScarJo in her best (and only nude scene featuring) performance but it's still too niche for most people. They just dont make movies like this anymore, and not surprisingly since this movie barely got any recognition from Awards and critics. I was hoping the Annihilation movie will have a similar DNA but that didn't happen.

I can ramble about this movie forever, but seriously do yourself a favor and watch it, even if you hate it you will appreciate it.
