These rankings are fucking dumb

It's reflective of which universities donate the most to usnews and fit their specific criteria

I eagerly await the same 20-30 posters bragging about the college they went to while the rest of the forum looks at the thread for a second then goes back to their life

Agreed with FZZ here. The ivy's are an obvious choice for the top of the list no matter what criteria is being used, but US News and World report rankings diverge quite a bit from the more respected international university ranking publications that don't factor in a lot of the....interesting criteria US World News chooses to make their rankings like donor bases and value

It is good to note that these are the first rankings under a new criteria to emphasize the success factors of low income students within the universities - following a previously published article that the ranking favored high income students.

Tuition in the US is insane, guys ...

Incredibly insane, something I thought as trivial as getting a textbook can cost up to $350 alone ($250 for the book, $100 for the online access and stuff)

Whereas in Indonesia, where I come from, we would have a riot if its cost us even just $100..

Always blows my mind to see out of state vs in state, especially when so many colleges try and get non-local students. Maybe if you want kids from out of the state you shouldn't charge 400% more?

West Point and the Air Force Academy being considered liberal arts colleges will never stop being weird to me. While that is what much of their curriculum is, they are completely different in terms of size, campus culture, and administrative structure.

All I got from the list is that what I've saved for my two kids to go college is going to fall far, far short. What a crock of shit.

Textbooks are a scam. I work in the Ed tech industry, and everybody acknowledges as much. Some of the people I work with with who used to work at publishers said they would just raise prices because they could.

There's a reckoning coming though. Open source textbooks and cheap competitive homework platforms are going to destroy most of the major publishers in like 15-20 years.

I'm glad my university never cared much for textbooks. I'd always get some 'developing country edition' that's printed in black and white on thin paper for like $20-$30 on Abebooks and no one ever said anything haha

Top rankings don't allow Laker fans, that's why you're stingy.

Just curious, what are the reputed international uni ranking publications? I usually hear they're ARWU, QS, and Times.

why is there such a difference between in-state and out of state tuition fees? Is it just a mechanism designed to make money out of parents who couldn't get their kids in schools in their own state?

The idea is that as residents of the state, your taxes have gone to contribute to the finding of the universities and therefore you and your dependents get a discount on attendance. In a nutshell.

Also, generally when parents/students are looking out of state, they're doing it voluntarily. Generally some of the most competitive and rich students are looking out of state. Sometimes the program offered isn't available or there is some "prestige" issue at play that causes a parent/student to look down on in-state options.

You don't pay the sticker price unless you're quite well off at top schools. It's the 2nd tier and below ones that tend to be the most expensive, because it's basically parents buying their children prestige.

These rankings are dumb but it's not because Princeton donated the most to the paper. The core concept of a well ordered list of universities is odd and mostly to the detriment of the academy.

I know someone who went to Swarthmore and someone else who got a full ride to Bryn Mawr. And holy hell at Columbia basically being 60K a year.

As someone who works in university marketing, I can confirm that rankings are dumb and extensively gamed.

SUCK IT CAL & SC

The way these three schools constantly leapfrog and trade places right next to each other on the list year after year is why I think this list is actively curated to get traffic and buzz. I mean, out of all the schools in the entire nation, what are the odds that these three rivals are always right next to each other in the rankings? Over the last decade and a half it seems like they've never gone further than a spot or two apart.

What I'm trying to say is that the only reason you're beating us this year is because the illuminati at US News just wants your clicks.

I like that there's a value ranking available which takes into account grants and "final cost".
