I had a base ps4 and picked up pro few months after it came out. On a 4k tv games like Spiderman, God of War, Uncharted and Horizon looks absolutely bonkers. I do have an xbox one x. It's a great console. But yeah for exclusives I would pick ps4 pro over xbox.

I mean the way I look at it:

- The S to X is a bigger upgrade than PS4 to Pro. If we ranked them in performance, right now you have the 3rd and 4th most powerful. I'd rather swap that for 1st (X) + 3rd (PS4), than to 2nd (Pro) + 4th (S).
- Best quality/performance on a TON of games vs better quality/performance on a handful of exclusives
- The X operates at a decent, acceptable volume which neither the PS4 nor the Pro do imo
- You get the added bonus of an enhanced backwards compatibility catalog
- You gain access to technology your monitor or future TVs can take advantage of, like Variable Refresh Rate and Auto Low Latency Mode

I have both consoles and wouldn't hesitate for a second to recommend the X tbh
Quality post right here.
I have an X and a LG b7, and Im really happy with my purchase

I've seen Digital Foundry and you have to use a microscope to see the difference from the Pro to the X on most of the third party games.

If this is so clear.. show me videos where the difference is "way ahead" as you say.

Agree. I don't see how people are saying there is a big difference between the X and pro when all the technical analysis have shown that there are very little differences.

It's a bummer the Pro doesn't have UHD, a bit better processing power (it's more a 1440p machine than 4K) and BC but it has a very strong argument with its exclusives.
If it's all that matter to you (having the largest library of 3rd party + exclusives you'll find nowhere else) go with the Pro.

Gawd, can you only choose one?

I have both and each of them serves its own unique purposes.

I use the Pro to play Sony exclusives in 4K, and watch 3D Blurays and play VR titles using PSVR.
The graphics on the exclusives are staggering, and the power boost for VR is appreciated.
However, it is a noisy, unwieldy and (dare I say) slightly overpriced console.

I use the X to play all multiplats, including those without 4K support, and to watch UHD BRs.
The number of exclusives is small compared to Sony's, but Gears of War 4 on a 4K OLED tv is the best looking game I have ever seen, and I include God of War in that statement.
The specs and build of the console seem to justify the price, and it has a nice form factor that complements an entertainment center.

Short answer: Sell your base PS4 and Xbox One S, invest a little extra and get both.

Yeah, this is one question I really wouldn't take internet strangers' opinions into account for OP.
You need to look at what upcoming games you personally are looking forward to and buy accordingly. If you're really looking forward to Spiderman and TLoU2 then the Pro is the easy answer. On the other hand if Shadow of the Tomb Raider and RDR2 are your most anticipated games than you should obviously get an X1X. It just depends how many games you play and on what systems.

The X is more powerful but personally I've played more PS4 exclusives and indie games (where the power difference doesn't matter nearly as much) than I have third party games, so if I had to choose between the two I'd get the Pro. But if you have different tastes you need to get what you'll use more.

Take this:

All of these are facts, but personally I only play a handful of games a year, almost never replay old games, and just bought a new TV and won't upgrade again for years, so most of these bullet points aren't information I would personally take into account, even though it's all true.

No doubt, it's all about what works for you which is why I mentioned things that I know are better on one console or the other. It's up to the OP to decide which things are important to him. Personally I play a lot of old games. My most played games this year didn't come out in the last 2 years except for Mario Odyssey and often I'm playing games even older than 2 years old so PC is my main platform. There are PS4 games that I probably won't get around to until close to the next gen consoles launching like GOW. I've seen enough to know that I'll like it a lot but old games don't stop being good games for me so I really have my consoles for when I do get that itch for the odd exclusive or the rare time that I feel like jumping in early with a console exclusive. My main problem with the mid-gen upgrades is that I'd love a UHD player for my 4K TV but the Pro doesn't have one and having my PC hooked up to my TV means I don't have a need for an Xbox 1X. So I agree, bullet points in favor of one over the other doesn't really work for an individual. In my case I'd pick neither. But the best we can do in threads like these is try to outline the differences just in case the OP missed them and then let her/him pick through and hopefully help to make a decision.

I have a base PS4 and One S right now, but with my recent purchase of a 4K TV, I thought it might be time to upgrade. I am split because I play equally, but I watch a lot of 4K video content.

For the price, what is the better deal?

I'd keep the base PS4 and upgrade to the X. The PS4 still outputs most games at 1080p and they still look great. The jump from PS4 to PS4 Pro isn't as crazy as One S to One X.

Based on your situation and what you already have, i'd hands down be keeping hold of your cash and await next gen.

VERY hard to do when you've just sprung for a fancy new 4k TV and want a new toy to take advantage.

I got an LG C8 this year and I personally upgraded my slim to a Pro. But I'm deep in Sonys ecosystem this gen. I already had a ton of games. I like so much of what Microsoft is doing these days:

Backwards compatibility
Games Pass
Cross play
More Power
Quieter (although I think I hit the lotto with my Pro, it never gets real loud)

I came very close to pulling the trigger on the X last 20% off Microsoft Store sale that seems to pop up in Aus every now and again. I'd finally made up my mind to get one, went to buy it and it went off sale the day before... DOH!

I still think I'd go the X in OP's shoes... but it would depend how much he loves those sweet Sony exclusives.

Get both, i bet you will be able to sell your ps4 and s for $400.
Get a pro and x for about$850
So you are spending $450
Then sell the x and pro for $450 and get a scarlett and ps5 in 2020 for about $900 but only spending $450.

So if u do this you will only be spending $450 now and in 2020, not to bad considering you have the best of everything and be happy.

I have a 75" Sony 900E. Even at this size the PRO with new games looks pristine. The days of jaggies are mostly behind us.

Truly, the base models should be decommissioned and no longer sold.

X is the better console no contest, if you already have a PS4 then you have the exclusives front covered

going with the X you get a uhd player and dolby atmos, plus you get to experience all the multiplats in their best possible form

Just a heed of warning, I might be in minority here but before you decide a console, I want to warn you that the PS4Pro's fans are extremely loud when under the load while XB1X is dead quiet. That's why I rather buy 3rd parrty games on X, even if I own both of them.

Given that you play equally, but watch a lot of 4K content, I wouldn't get either.
Your PS4 has the exclusives front covered and your One S has your 4K video content covered (it has a 4K drive).
Now if you're interested in playing games in higher res/better IQ, then I would trade your One S in to get a One X.

If its a HDR 4K TV with at least 800-1000 nits then I say PS4 Pro, since it has some of the best HDR games I have played this gen. SoTC,GTS, and HZD would be my top recommendations for HDR games. HDR is also supported on the base PS4, and Xbox one S, so you can still try HDR on either of them.
I think SotC is the best looking game this gen, it's insane how good that game looks. Better than HZD IMHO. But the game that's impressed me the most from a HDR point of view is easily Gears 4, specifically "No Detours".

Agreed with others. Upgrade to the X because it's more powerful than the Pro, but especially because the UHD player. That's worth it alone. I have both but I use the X more, aside from exclusives on the Pro of course.

He already has X1S. Also, UHD player in both X1S and X1X are the same. You're covered with X1S for watching 4K movies, get a Pro for games, especially exclusives.

Agreed, go with the X.

I own both the Pro and X and the X is the one you want for it's power and features. So much quieter to boot. Not that the Pro is a bad machine but if you want all the bells and whistles and you already own both base consoles the X is the obvious choice.

For what it's worth, I've got a base model Xbox and a PS4 pro under my 4K TV. The pro only looks marginally better than the Xbox.

PS4 has the better library, in my opinion. One X got the better hardware and great backwards compatibility. I would check the catalogue and would go with the respective console. In the end it's the games you're playing on it, no matter the hardware. Keep in my mind though that the Pro doesn't have a 4k Blu-ray player.

You basically answered your own question. For a 4K TV and if you watch a lot 4K video content, the Xbox One X is the better device.

If you have a Samsung television (mine is a 2017 model), highly recommend X. It connects instantly and never goes black to reassess an HDR connection. My Pro does and it's maddening.

Pretty sure they said assassins creed origins is pushing out up to 80% more pixels then the pro, seems like a big difference to me.

The "X" easily. You have a PS4 so you have access to the PS4 Exclusives. Contrary to some others, some of the 3rd party games are significantly better on the "X" over the Pro.
The problem is there. Some. I have one and surely some game offers notable improvement but not the majority. In any case, I have hard time to suggest one over the other. If money are an issue, pro is the choice but if money are not a problem, he should have both.

The X. The ps4 exclusives will either be playable on ps5 or be remastered at 4k 60fps on ps5. X is the best place to play games now.

"Significantly better graphics" now that's a hyperbole. If it was so significant then graphics comparison channels likes Digital Foundry wouldn't need to zoom in 400% just to outline slight differences between 2160p and 1800p.

that's patently false. The Xbox One X is 30'ish percent faster than the Pro, and owning both it does show. Except for Sony exclusives which are god-damn wizardry.

How is it patently false? A minority of games show notable improvement on the X over the Pro and mostly because they use better texture aka 4k or AF. For the most, face off on DF needs to be zoomed to 400% to show the real benefit of higher res because it's hard with such pixels density.

so let's see here: higher texture resolution, AF and higher overall resolution are *not* significant. to each their own.

You completely mislead my word. I said a very minority of games show notable improvement over the Pro and such improvement are for the most higher texture res and AF. But when we are talking specifically of just res, it's not even that easy to spot on such difference. Of course is someone is obssesed to have the better multiplat console over everything, he should get the X without thoughts. But I disagree about the vastly superior multiplat on the X argument, because it's valid just sometimes.

Depends what you care about. BC, UHD movies and multiplats? X. Exclusives? Pro without a doubt.

And keep in mind the difference in resolution is hardly noticeable when sitting at a normal distance. I'm using a 65 inch OLED at 3.80m and it's really neglectable. HDR is the real thing that makes games pop on a 4K display.

You already have an One S for 4k Blu Ray so id go with PS4 Pro for beautiful looking exclusives. And honestly there difference isnt that huge for 3rd party games.

If you care enough about image quality to get a 4k HDTV and a mid gen console then the differences in resolution alone for third party games are absolutely huge.

The X has a much larger advantage in resolution over the Pro than most people predicted it would and it gets very close to native 4k in a lot of third party games (vs mostly 1440p on the Pro) and hits native 4k in most first party titles.

I have an X and a Pro so I'm only giving my experiences. I don't want console war posts aimed at me.

hey man if you don't see the difference I feel like that's your answer right there. you're not in the pickle those are that do see a difference -- like me. thankfully I can afford to own both and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I mean let's be honest, if you aren't a 4k fiend, the xbox is more or less a redundant console if you own a ps4.

I never say I can't see any difference. The hell you are talking about now? I said most of the games show negligible difference and just some indeed show a notable upgrade.
Higher pixels density and alternative res reconstruction trick the eye for the most.

On paper yes, but at the distance most people are sitting, it's actually pretty hard to see. My eyes are fine by the way. There are a lot more aspects about graphics that make a game look good. It's the reason why practically all of Sony's exclusives look better on lower resolutions than native 4K multiplatform games look on X.

Get an X and keep your base ps4.
By the end of this gen the gap between X and Pro will be somewhat bigger after devs get to ringing the full power out of it.

I'd say get the X for a UHD BR player, with stuff like Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, higher resolutions on most multiplats
I'd say both, otherwise I would agree with this this the caveat of recommending a 4 Pro after they make a hardware revision to quiet the thing down.

X has the best quality third parties. A lot of games are spectacular with 4K and HDR. Also you can use it for UHD Blu-Rays unlike the Pro. If you really are into PS4 exclusives like Spider-Man or Horizon it's probably the best pick, but unless you are absolutely needing those specific games in 4K, in general the X has more going for it. It even "remasters" a lot of 360 and Xbox Original games into 4K, btw.

If the question is about pure graphic power -> X
But I would go on the console you like more the exclusive if you have to choose one or another.
So that depends entirely on you.
You say you watch a lot of 4K content, iirc PS4Pro doesnt support 4K physical disc? So that would be X for you. (or you can get a 4k blu ray reader, I mean won't ever choose a console for anything but games on it first...)
