I don't see other Marvel games being Sony Exclusives. Sony and Spiderman have a bit of a history, and this might have been part of the deal to let Disney/Marvel have the film rights back to Spiderman as long as Sony got the right to distribute the solo movies (and games). We already know Avengers is coming by CD and there's no chance in hell that's just for PlayStation.

My prediction is that someone is gonna chime in here confidently telling you that the movie rights positively had nothing to do with the gaming rights, as though they were in the room during the discussions.

Edit: just cos that's exactly what I got when I suggested this before :P

Well, I mean, should we just go with speculation? Or what a developer from Insomniac says what happened?

Wtf? Lmao. The pics n gifs between puddle gate to gifs like this, it's been an amazing couple of weeks.

idk how people think this game wouldn't be an absolute smash like this. do some folks not realize who spider-man is. like how fucking huge this character is. this character with movies and cartoons, tokusatsu-esque shows in japan decades ago...

the person (people?) that consider spider-man to be some kind of niche... are u on crack? hes one of the few characters to break free from the shackles of simply being a comic book character and vault into so much beyond that. hes more popular than superman for gods sake

You would be surprised...lol.

PS4 is taking over. It's been known. Oh wait.... it's already dominating since forever ;D
In all seriousness: Congratulations Insomniac Games, jstevenson and SIE. Well deserved for an incredible game.
Ratchet & Clank next please! :)

Yes. Kudos, kudos, kudos to them.

I'm actually worried crows might go extinct after these news...

lol.

Everytime i see UK in the title im like "yep seems about right"

This gen every game is the fastest selling/best selling game over there.

And in the US. I've said before ppl haven't been paying attention this gen.

A game about probably one of the most well known superhero if not the most in a age where superheroes dominate the media is selling like hotcakes? you don't say....

I feel posts like this kind of do a disservice to the devs. Still had to be a good game to do this well.

No surprise for me to be honest.

Spidey games always sold really well and they've been mostly really bad or uninspired games.

Add Spider + Quality on a powerhouse console that dominates the Market and the result is pretty obvious.

I can't remember selling so many games at my store in a long time. It's reaching FIFA numbers (not the pre-orders, but the regular launch window sales) here.

But this logic doesn't apply historically. Star Wars, Spider-Man, batman, LOTR, Harry Potter and so many other brands are massive compared to the biggest selling video games. Go back and look how they're games sold historically. Being a big brand doesn't automatically mean huge video game sales and that has been true of Spider-Man as well.

If it was as simple as you say you'd see all these big franchises having games pumped out left, right and centre.

Having said that I do think with these more advanced consoles these franchises can be better represented and may see stronger sales as a result.

Exactly to all this.

Unless everyone is lying Spider-Man was only brought to the table after Marvel came to Sony and the Sony went to Insomniac and the developers themselves picked Spider-Man as the character they'd make a game about. They could have made an Iron Man or a Hulk game if they wanted.

I'm aware of that post by jstevenson. He states that it wasn't part of any other deal, sure.

I still find it hard to believe that if Sony were to play hardball with the movie rights and kept spider-man to themselves that Marvel would be keen to approach Sony to make a platform exclusive game.

Edit: but yeah, point taken. The history has already been written on this deal.

It's because they know Sony has talent. Via 1st party and 2nd party partners. If they wanted a crappy multiplatform game they could have stuck with Activision.

Marvel Cinematic Universe getting over saturated? Time to make the Marvel Gaming Universe!

Spider-man (insomniac) -> Iron-man (Guerrilla) -> Thor (Sucker Punch) -> Captain America (Santa's Monica)
After seeing how Santa Monica implemented Kratos's Axe, they're the only ones I want seeing handle a Thor game unless someone can perfectly emulate their style. GoW was easily the best Thor game that released.

Insomniac about to become Spidey factory, huh? Makes me wonder how much faster they can get a sequel out with supposedly New York being the main location again and a big amount of work and figuring out all kinds of things like the traversal already in place.

Impressive. And the chart only includes 3 days of sales? I guess Spider-Man had to do what Spider-Man to do

Have certain members expressed their interest for this game's legs yet?

I'm watching football (American) right now and just saw a badass commercial of gameplay that would make me go buy it right now if I didnt already own it.

Huge sales. I was expecting somewhere in the region of 110k (around NMS), especially with the Friday release. But I guess pent up demand for a new release after a very long summer drought, lots of hype surrounding a great licensed game that was of good quality and plenty of marketing combined just absolutely knocked it out of the park.

Not played a lot of it so far, but well deserved based on what I have. It has a similar but more in-depth combat system to batman (a series I also love), with a more enjoyable traversal system.

Well done insomniac!

Yup, I said it on Friday and before, this game is going to sell a loooooot of units, it seems to be insanely popular and all these anecdotes about people looking for copies and several people picking the game up add up. We're going to be seeing more threads like this pop up for other markets.

I've never played a Spider-Man video game, but I feel like I'm missing out by not owning it. Should I just fucking buy this shit?

Good point, you're right. Even though there has been a bunch of games based on movie/comic franchises with some positive results, stressing your point, I guess the real success of a game like this comes down to a truthful representation of the mental image people have of a certain ip through e.g. comics and/or movies. Usually people want the game to capture that same feeling as a certain movie or a comic had, and that vibe maybe hasn't been that easy or possible to achieve since recently. It's so much easier to have zero expectations, but of course the game must always be of good quality.

I think we could see more of these quality games based on big franchises in the future. The companies owning these big IP's surely would have the funding down, and I guess that gaming as a medium is gathering more ground with every passing year and seen as a more and more profitable business to practice.
