So erm, PAX seems to have happened, and I thought I heard UFO50 was going to be there. Haven't seen a single article about the game over the weekend, no release date, no updates, no announcements. Since the game collection was first announced it has been radio silence other than some tweets here and there indicating it's still in development. Anyone knows what's going on? Did anyone go to PAX and have a chance to talk to the devs? Would be cool to know when to expect this. If they're polishing stuff up and its taking a long time that's fine, but I don't understand why there's been no coverage. Did they pull it from PAX?

For context, this is UFO50: https://50games.fun/

It was there at least-

Derek Yu tweeted out a couple weeks ago that all 50 would be playable at Pax.
16 of the 50 have a 2 player mode according to someone else on twitter.

Yeah, I was waiting for it, too. Spelunky's style seemed to be losing some of the uniqueness I liked in it, so I wanted this game to get me back in the proper Mossmouth games lovefest. But search as I might, I haven't seen anyone talk about it on youtube these past few days.

Just too many games, I guess?

Definitely played it. Also gushed about Derek Yu's works with him and to tried to argue for an easy option in Spelunky 2.

Both games are still on my hype list.

Could you share more about what you played and talked about? I'm pretty excited about this collection because I'm a sucker for retro-minigame stuff - loved Retro Games Challenge to death. How substantial were the games you played and what's the average quality like?

They feel less like minigames and more like full NES games so far. One game I played was a dino-themed turn-based strategy about choosing gods to worship to gain resources and build your army to control territory. It's got enough depth to be released as a cheap standalone game so far. The games cover pretty much any genre you could think that works on the NES. Another game, Sacrifice, is a platformer where your character classes can be killed to benefit the next players. For instance, you can sacrifice the warrior to use him as a platform after killing enemies to clear a path for weaker characters.

Derek Yu told me that multiple team members are working on the games. I'm not exactly sure how it's organized.

Probably the Seinfeld effect. When a game's do influential, you see copycats trying to one-up it, sometimes making it look dated in the process.

Edit : Pardon the Double Post

Thanks for the updates everyone. I guess there was no hint of a release date yet? Oh well, back to waiting! It looks really cool!

I didn't mean minigame in the unsubstantial sense, but rather that they were games-within-a-game-package thing. Much like Retro Games Challenge, where the games were basically full retro games too with multiple stages, scoring, sometimes difficulty settings, etc. I love anthologies!

Arstechnica article where the writer talks a bit about 12 games in the collection he played at Pax-
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017...-of-ufo-50s-games-are-instant-retro-classics/

"UFO 50 comes packed with even more games of varying styles, including beat-'em-ups, shoot-'em-ups, tower defense, city-building strategy games, and, er, a "party simulator" in which you have to throw a party that is somehow super-fun yet not so wild that the cops show up. There's a lot going on in this 50-game package, and I am already excited to see how the full set turns out when it launches "sometime in 2018."

So they're planning for a release in the next 3 1/2 months at least.

I played this a bunch at PAX both last year and this year. Probably tried 10-15 different games across both.

It's tons of fun! Incredible amount of variety, everything from arcadey golf games to shooters to RPG-lite games and more. Creative combinations of retro-style games with more modern mechanics built into them.

For example, there was one shooter I played which had a mechanic where you could lock your aim in one direction and move in another direction. Considering that every game has NES-style graphics and is played with an NES controller - just a d-pad and 2 buttons - the fact that they pulled it off gave it a different feel than what I was used to.
