Mod Edit: It's entirely possible to take issue with Serena Williams' behavior while also acknowledging the adversity she has faced in her career. Please do not make inflammatory generalizations or insinuations towards other members based on this criticism.

Naomi Osaka won her first Grand Slam title Saturday, beating Serena Williams in a controversial US Open final that saw the American docked a game after calling the umpire a "thief."

Osaka prevailed against her idol 6-2, 6-4 in New York to deny Williams a record 24th major and become the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam singles title.
Osaka indeed made history for Japan but the final will be remembered as much -- if not more -- for Williams clashing with chair umpire Carlos Ramos.

Ramos first gave Williams a code violation warning for coaching in the second game of the second set. Williams then approached the net and told Ramos: "I don't cheat. I'd rather lose. Every time I play here I have problems."
Williams may have been referring to 2009 at the US Open when she received a point penalty against Kim Clijsters in the semifinals -- she was deemed to have verbally abused a linesperson -- and was called for hindrance during a point in the 2011 final against Sam Stosur.

Williams later got a point penalty Saturday for cracking her racket and then was docked a game, to trail 5-3, for what Ramos deemed to be verbal abuse towards him. "You stole a point from me and you are a thief," Williams said during a changeover, to prompt his ruling.

Should be noted that the coach admitted to coaching, despite Serena's initial protests.

Congrats to Japan & Haiti.

People need to learn the meaning of the word "meltdown"

Can some of us stop using overused Internet words to describe everything? "Meltdown", "hot take", "meme" when they aren't even those things?

EDIT: I felt really bad for Naomi Osaka at the trophy presentation. You win your first Grand Slam and you get a chorus of boos.

I think the ref was horrible and unreasonable. That did affect Serena's play, but no guarantee she would have won as she was already being outplayed. However, Serena pulling out the woman card was a bit much for me.

I can understand the boos aimd toward the umpire during the game, but booing during the ceremony is uncalled for.

Congrats to Osaka on her first GS win though that's pretty impressive nonetheless.

This is a meltdown. Her coach was giving instructions. She freaked out when he was caught.

She's not having a meltdown. She's the best in the world and fiercely competitive.

Any serious athlete would be mad at a call they think is bullshit.

This place kills me sometimes.

That seemed to be the point when the ref just turned around. I'm not familiar with tennis whatsoever, though. Hopefully Serena wasn't being unfairly targeted.

Lol people saying this wasn't a meltdown.

Sure, it wasn't a full meltdown (refusing to continue playing), but it was definitely a meltdown.

Framing this as a "meltdown" is wack as fuck bro

Not my wording, it's Reuters'. Replace it with CNN's "controversial" or Telegraph's "unleashes furious rant" (lol) if you want.

She went on a nonsensical tirade about how being a mother means she can't possibly cheat, while crying. Berated the umpire for several minutes. Broke her racket. Continued to berate the umpire. Called in a US Open manager to complain about the umpire.

Whatever happened with the judge, it's really good to see her supporting Osaka at the ceremony

I wanna see this same energy when basketball season starts and lebron or what other superstar gets a call they don't agree with.
From news outlets? Why wouldn't they shy away from such a claim? If anything it gets them more clicks. What's the equivalent of smashing a racket that Lebron could do? Whip the ball at the ground or something.

So first of all, let me just say that I hate it when athletes, especially very rich and successful ones, take it out on umpires like that, I think it's unbecoming.
With that being said, Serena had faced unfair treatment throughout her career and the tennis code of conduct is mostly classist and sexist bullshit we should honestly just do away with.
I still think Serena is better than this, but I think the focus should be on changing the way those game are officiated and how athletes behavior is policed and regulated rather than wag our collective finger at Serena, which I'm sure what all the sports shows will do.

The people in the crowd who booed the ceremony should go fuck themselves.
