You know not everyone hates those "busy work" missions?

Pay no attention. Guy is the Debby Downer of Era. Everything he posts lately is a complaint or an attack on people for liking a game.

Edit: I think I'm being too rough here. He's been very helpful and informative before, just lately rather negative.

I've been getting all the collectables as I go because it's just too fun to traverse the city and the combat is so damn good. It's challenging and you feel like a badass when you do everything right. Insomniac really nailed it with this game.

Played 5 hours straight. After you learn how the game mechanics work it's phenomenal.
It has all been said how good the gameplay elements are. When it clicks, it clicks.

Absolutely love all characters so far, from the Kingpin to Aunt May, they look all fantastic. The score is great, i don't mind if the main theme is playing when swinging, i love it.

Not all games have to reinvent the wheel, this game is safe and doesn't take risks, yes, but so what?

Great work Insomniac, looking forward to the next session with Spidey!

I'm looking forward to having a conversation about this game in a month after we've got over the shininess and the swinging

There's a LOT that needs to be talked about here
People in this very topic are taking about the things they like and the things they dont so today is the day you can talk about whatever you want!

Sooooo...what about boss battle and the main story in general?

Are there good moments and epic battles? Or is just average?

Seriously. Why wait? I always find it awkward how so many forum posters seem to look forward to bashing critically acclaimed things. No surprise that the same ones that do it here are the same ones that came from GAF. It's like they live for this shit lmao.

The combat is so well designed. I love how fast and fluid it is. It makes stopping all the random robberies and heists so rewarding.
I was really hoping Insomniac was going to differentiate themselves from the whole REVEAL more of the city trope that I just loathe in
open world games. I also hate all the random collectibles like the backpacks and landmarks but everything else is so great.

I think it definitely has some inFamous DNA, and I don't think that's a bad thing. It's inFamous + Spider-Man 2.

Thats actually a good way to describe it. It definitely gives me Infamous vibes.

So, what exactly do you like about them then? I'm genuinely curious.

Same thing I love about mining in Minecraft. I legit enjoy working towards something. Collecting backpacks was quite fun, especially seeing what each item was. Landmarks I actually got really good taking pictures while swinging.

Pigeons and drone challenges are probably the worst ones. Everything else I didn't even think too hard about, and half of that is straight optional, so... if it's not your jam, don't do it?

Man I can never decide what suit to wear. The Advanced Suit has grown on me but then there's classic, Homecoming, Iron Spider, etc. Plus, it feels kinda wrong not using the Advanced Suit for story missions

I find them fun little time wasters. Generally for open world games I'll do a couple of story missions then a couple of side missions that will take me around the world or let me enjoy some of the mechanics I like to cool down from the story missions. I'm not someone who has to religiously beat them all. If I want to do a small side mission I will, to relax and do something outside of the story missions. If I don't like the side missions I won't do them.

In Spider-Man I quite enjoy the time limited challenges and I like the bases. Not huge on the random crimes but some can be fun and the car chases I can use to improve my swinging. Some, I won't do, like the pigeon ones but them existing doesn't have a detrimental affect on my enjoyment of the game. Basically, I enjoy the mechanics and enjoy using them.

I enjoy finding the backpacks too, for the same reason as I enjoyed getting the orbs in Crackdown. It's fun to find.

Played a lot today, this is so much fun. Being Spider-Man is an absolute joy, swinging doesn't get old for me. Combat at the standard stay alive level is better than arkham I feel. There is more danger to keep track off and more moves available. When things click it's a gorgeous ballet of timing and good management of skills on various enemies.

Batman though had a whole extra layer of a scoring system that's missing from Spider-Man and while that wasn't that necessary when just playing the game to complete it, it became the basis for the fantastic trial modes. When you need to cycle through every attack, while keeping a combo going, it's a thrill that not even this game can replicate. I kind of wish this game had the same kind of bonus layer of scoring the combat as batman did, cause it could be better.

The presentation is out of this world, feels like playing a marvel movie. Side content leaves a lot to be desired though, it's extremely basic stuff. Sadly it feels like you have this mechanically great game with impeccable presentation but wrapped in the shell of the most cliche of open world activities,

Just the core gameplay is so incredibly fun. Swinging around the city never gets old and combat is fast, fluid, and varied. Especially when you mix in some air moves, you can get some really fun combos that way.

I'm starting to get annoyed at how often the game has you controlling MJ.
It's actually starting to piss me off. The MJ sequences are straight garbage and they make you do so many of them.

The more I play this game the more I see why it got dinged in a number of reviews and I think some of the reviewers were too soft on certain aspects.

Had no missions on the map despite the missions tab saying they were active. So no idea where to find them. Had to reset the game to make the icon show.
Feels like a Bethesda experience with the glitches.

I'll eventually go back to the homecoming one, but still

I HATE the early homecoming suit from the backpacks side quests, the goggles are so goofy lol

One thing I can't get over is how fantastic and detailed the game looks at street level when you could argue a lot of players won't appreciate it because they'll spend 80% of the time airborne.

Haven't really been able to dive into the game due to work and friends but the stuff I have played has been fantastic.

The combat can still kick my ass at times, especially when the bigger guys come in. Looks easy but I keep getting hit. Even died once during the first boss fight.

Yeah. I'm on the

mission and at least they're trying to mix it up here.

I really love the photomode, but I hope they will add a brightness setting or something else to make Spidey pop out more because he can appear pretty dark in a lot of settings.

Other than that, I'm really having a blast with the game, especially after getting more comfortable with the combat system which kinda allows you to pull off wild shit pretty early in the game. And yeah, the swinging is *chief's kiss* - can't wait to unlock more abilities to further improve it

I said it earlier in the thread, but people judge content too much purely by what you do rather than why you do them. Like calling the side activities here busy work implies that you find it as pointless and meaningless repetition, but that judgement isn't inherent to the content but rather why one plays and what they're seeking from the game

Much like the orbs in Crackdown, everything you do is another step toward new tangible unlocks that affect gameplay, everything is progression in some way. Landmarks and backpacks build upon that already existing feeling of profession with digital tourism and world-building/backstory respectively, while challenges and crimes offer more opportunities to enjoy the combat and traversal

Did I miss something? I'm just past the E3 demo part of the game and I'm not understanding something

How is Peter certain that Martin Li is behind what happened at the award ceremony? As far as I can tell, only Miles was around when Li was revealed to be there giving commands. After that ended, it skipped to the funereal then to Peter looking for evidence to prove it was Li. I know he had suspicions based on Li acting weird earlier when he said he was going away, but did I miss anything else? It was pretty jarring to see him actively looking into finding out who the Demons were to suddenly knowing Li was their leader.

Glad you can turn on the skip puzzles and still get the research rewards. I just played Ratchet and Clank 2016 to completion the night before and man I'm 100% over "hacking puzzles" They absolutely ruined the pace in that game and I have no patience for them anymore.

Hilariously watched a video on youtube about how hacking puzzles are never fun and no one has been able to make them so despite how many games have them. This one is added to the list for me.

Did you skip the bit where the camera clearly zooms in from Peter's shoulder to Li using his powers to posses the deputy mayor and carry out the bomb? His spider-sense pops off the moment Mister Negative shows up.

The landmarks and the backpacks are fine, even stuff like the research centers are acceptable. It's garbage like chasing pigeons or find the black cat missions that are absolutely pointless and add nothing to the game. Even stuff like the hideouts could have been done in a much more intricate and personal manner than what is currently there. It's pure monotony.

So much of the side material doesn't flesh out the world in any way and it's just a way to keep the player busy.

The dark suit? It's amazing. I've been switching back and forth between Dark, homecoming and Noire

Yeah I guess I missed it. I'll rewatch the cutscene. I'm actually so glad that it's just something I missed because I'm loving the game so far and that left me really confused.

One day we'll have a straight up conversation about the secondary/tertiary activities and tasks in this game without the honeymoon phase of "but the swinging though."

Insomniac needs to triple the number of quest designers for the sequel.

Here, let's do this now. Most of what is in here as activities is fluff, but I enjoy this fluff moreso than any other game that does the same because the act of doing the fluff is more fun. I also like that they flesh out Peter's previous 8 years as Spider-Man. Now your turn.

I may be wrong but

Li was one of the guys that turned negative and before the bombs went off, and Peter saw them when he went all spidey sense. At least that's what I thought.

That feels like there was a last minute change and they didn't fix resultant plot details. By all accounts he shouldn't know that element at that particular point but the game assumes he does.

Yeah it confused me at first but I gave it a little rewatch and it really helped. Reminds me that the game needs a cutscene viewer or something.

I have a hard time getting invested in open world games lately (mostly because I'm a bit tired of their structure) and even if this game doesn't add much to the formula, I can't stop playing.

Something about it is fascinating. The atmosphere maybe? Idk, I just love it ! :D

Yeah I just rewatched the cutscene

on a second watch you get like a 1 second view of Li being all mind-controly but on a first watch ive no idea how you're meant to pick up on that being Li and that he's mind controlling

I think that could definitely have been made clearer with a better reveal.

https://youtu.be/hl6Pzq6Ohjs

1hr 46 minutes is when it starts, 1:46:15 is the "reveal". That's extremely easy to miss. Yes it's a clear shot but it's not clear who it's a shot of.

If the player finds the core gameplay as fun and satisfying, is that inherently a bad thing? It's only a negative if the player finds it repetitive, hence my points earlier that "busy work" is subjective and not purely dictated by content or style of content

And I disagree about the pigeons; they offer a temporary objective for some structured swinging, which is fun to me.

The Black Cat stuff though is just boring and I turned those off on the map

This, also the emote selection is rather thin, not even mentioning that he only gets to do one post on selfie mode when on the ground, unless I'm missing something.

Speaking of photo mode
