It's been previously posted in the Artifact and PC Gaming thread, but now it's official:

He left Valve in March 2017 to work on Overwatch with Blizzard. He previously worked on Dota 2, Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2, etc.

How many people has Valve re-hired over the last year? Feels like it's becoming a trend.

So is Valve going to become a real game company again or what?

I do believe it's been at least a few.

Mind, this isn't unheard of. Epic had a 2-3 year period where they were canceling a lot of prototypes while trying to find good ideas for their new f2p direction, and lost a lot of staff, but a ton of them returned after they got things together and started releasing games like Paragon and Fortnite.

If Valve comes back, I'm back too. Would love to see them start doing major releases again.

Gaming is becoming what streaming TV services are right now, with a big focus on exclusive content. With more of the bigger game companies pulling out of Steam, I'd say Valve sees the writing on the wall and realizes they need to start making more games in order to keep people using their services.

Woplaw would be my dream pick.
Didn't he want to leave the industry? I think Psychonauts 2 is the last game he's working on.
I'm more curious about Chet Faliszek. I don't think he'll return to Valve, but what he's doing at Bossa (trying to do something new in the narrative space using [artificial intelligence]) is exactly the kind of project I want Valve to take on.

Man, Artifact is really shaping up to be something special.

I think people are sleeping on it because it's its pre launch push has been pretty low key.

But I'm convinced it's going to explode the online TCG space the instant it releases .

Valve has never released a bad game. So I expect a ton of positive reviews and coverage as soon as it releases

For real - people also sleep on it because TCGs are not everyone's genre of choice.

Having seen a bunch of games played by devs and pros and after playing TCGs for 20+ years I am confident Artifact is the latest in Valve's storied history of top tier releases.

No idea he left in the first place, been out of the loop. Really glad to see that despite all the losses they've been taking that they've been on the receiving end just as well.

Because some people can't point out how evil Valve is, that the house of cards is crumbling, that all publishers will abandon Steam in a matter of months.

This makes me curious, I've read some stories of Valve being a... weird place to work at, but Blizz? Is there any story floating around on the conditions in Blizzard? Like, was Metzen a douche or something like that? For the record I think he was not but still, you never know lol

Based on his comment it sounds like he moved to Blizzard just for Overwatch. Maybe he's just not that interested in their current projects now that Overwatch is in maintenance mode.

Perhaps odd for Gabe to use Reddit but given the context, not too weird. Seems like they just opened up a bit over the PAX period

Finol showed up on the stage at PAX to play an artifact game against Slacks. As they also do the Dota casting they were having a bit of fun about how they recognise the Venezuelan (infamous of the "Finol pause" at TI3 and shitty wizard meme while working on Dota), and Bruno assigned to help him win. Quite a few of the Valve folk have been a bit more talkative over the PAX period answering questions, but oddly also the questions involving staff / valve mentioning have more games coming etc

Why do people act like a developer leaving a company for another is "uncommon"?
People can leave a company for reasons other than "they were having a terrible time there".

Most companies only have a few projects (or even just one project) to work on, and those projects often take 4-5+ years to make, so you have to move around if you want to change what you're working on.

The industry is a bit different than it used to be where any game was 1-2 years and you'd have a pretty good shot at notably influencing what cake next if you stuck around. There might not even be a "what's next" due to service games now, like with Rainbow Six Siege stocking around for 10+ years.
