In 1991, SEGA released a Shinobi game onto the Game Gear, titling it simple The GG Shinobi. In its English release, this was the box art

It's not a bad boxart, though it does beg one to consider why the ninja is flying through the air while a weird big green genie head is floating towards him like it's some sleazy salesman.

The Japanese release had this lovely little piece

Now the GG Shinobi is an interesting little game: You play as the Red Shinobi and must first clear the initial 4 stages and defeat the boss in them to save your fellow Power Rang- I mean Shinobi buddies; Pink, Green, Blue and Yellow.

Now each Shinobi has their own unique weapon and Ninjitsu attack which can be used to find certain items or paths through a level. Pink can stick to ceilings by pressing Up+Jump, whereas Green has a Double Jump which, in the series' tradition requires strict timing to pull off.
Speaking of items, the 4 levels each have a hidden Health up item which will be helpful in the long run if you manage to get them all.

The difficulty of the stages is quite good, though I feel with some QoL the overall game could've been better, as some sections were pretty annoying to deal with.
The bosses fought at the end of each stage are decent too, although Valley's boss being piss easy is a bit of a welcome considering it was the toughest stage for me.

Anyways upon completing all 4 main stages, you progress to the final stage which can be as long as the 4 prior stages combined! I had to use a guide to figure out the proper path to go through to beat the game as the final stage is something of a maze with rooms having hazards which require using one of the other Shinobis in order to progress.
Upon reaching the final boss it turns out
that it was the Black Shinobi who betrayed the team! And in a as climatic a battle as the Game Gear's hardware could pull off you defeat him and destroy his home base of Neo City and your heroic Shinobis run off into the sunset

All in all it is a decent game though it can be tough and the music and visuals are quite good. Yuzo Koshiro actually worked on the game's music
and even got Terrible Beat as the boss theme for the game!

Also what the hey

Lately I've been seeing a lot of praise for gamegear games. Too bad I never owned that system. I'd love to try more of the games one day.

I felt The G.G. Shinobi II: The Silent Fury was a better game, I loved it to bits and it had the same premise of saving your fellow Power Range - I mean comrades.

I grew up playing the console Shinobi games but completely ignored the Game Gear ones until recently.
And I would say that the second one is easily one of the best entries in the series. The first game was an interesting but fairly rough blueprint. The sequel is a massive improvement and a great mix of Metroidvania and Mega Man mechanics. A true gem, I highly recommend it.

I got GG Shinboi when i got my Game Gear for xmas wayyy back in.... 91?

Great game, i remember playing through it dozens of times. I actually have the cart for it (not my original one, i just wanted another copy for nostalgia, and GG games are dirt cheap).

Is it available on 3ds then?

I had this and the sequel for Game Gear as a kid, great games. I especially was fond of them because they were their own thing instead of just a stripped down Genesis port. Still a shame we never got the second one on 3DS VC (at least in the US).

The Batman Returns game for Master System/Game Gear is somewhat similar to the GG Shinobi games, albeit with branching level selection rather than the Mega Man format. Yuzo Koshiro did the music for that game as well.

I owned a GG Shinobi cartridge in the 90's. I played this game a lot, but the last stage was the embodiment of hell. 5/6 year old me never managed to finish it.

Yeah, GG Shinobi is a really fun game. A bit easy perhaps compared to The Revenge Of Shinobi, but still a solid game with a great soundtrack.

Speaking of which, the track 'Long Distance' from The Revenge Of Shinobi is also in GG Shinobi, but it's titled 'Joe' in this game.

Thats an interesting boxart.

But as far I played the game at the time, wasn't particulary that great. Even though Shinobi for Master-System was a port, it end up being a better game because of some healthy adjustments made.

Apparently it isn't on EU eShop :S I'd really like to play it if it is an improvement on the first.

Ah didn't realise, yeah I think it was definitely an improvement in my opinion.

I loved my Game Gear, best part about it was being able to play in the dark, whilst my brother had to use his silly looking GameBoy light add-on.

I remember the Sonic Drift, Streets of Rage 2, Dynamite Heddy and probably my favourite GG game of all time, Spider Man: Return of the Sinister Six

I love that crazy 90s style box art. It looks like the shuriken is just flying out of his hand randomly.

I'm working on collecting a complete Game Gear library for all regions and really, REALLY enjoyed this game. I haven't finished it, and this made me decide I need to go back and do so.

On a side note, do we not have an official Game Gear thread here on Era? If so, maybe I'll look into starting one, if there is interest in such a thing.

The GG Shinobis are way too overlooked even by fans of the console/arcade games. They did a great job of mixing up the gameplay formula. Any time I read someone saying the Game Gear library sucked, I know they probably haven't even played these games.

The first GG Shinobi is only a few dollars on 3DS. Way more people should at least be trying it.

Another cool thing is in the emulation scene, the Game Gear Shinobis have been converted into Master System roms.

Game Gear hardware had its notorious problems but there are a lot of good games. Shining Force Sword Of Hajya alone is already a great experience with the handheld tech of the time.

What does that mean exactly?

Loved my game gear as a kid. Played this a lot as it was one of few games I owned. Never made it to the end however. Cool Spot was my jam as well.

It means the games have unofficially been ported to run on the Sega Master System and Genesis/Mega Drive. You can play them via Everdrive, reproduction cartridge, or emulator. The Master System can't display as many colours as the Game Gear so the hackers had to reduce the palette a bit but they still look close to the originals.

Loved playing this as a kid. Definitely my favorite GG game.

It's funny, back then I couldn't figure out the double jump, or the blue magic or something - I would always beat the first four levels, then go to the first room in the final one and get stuck. I did go back and finish it as an adult, feels good.

The sequel is worth checking out too. Probably the better game even. I never played it as a kid though, so I don't have so much nostalgia for it.

With Game Gear resolution I guess?

Pretty cool anyway, never heard of ports like that before.
