This was never a secret. They've been listed as the dev on the eshop from the start.

https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/snk-heroines-tag-team-frenzy-switch

Had no idea. It wouldn't have stopped me from trying it either. I don't know about Abstraction Games- do they have a bad rep?

Wow. Quite the turnaround there. Now only the switch is getting a physical release in the west. A shame about the performance though

No, there is a physical American release...with a catch:
For whatever reason, the American physical PS4 release is only available by ordering the $120 limited edition box from NISA. You can also get physical Japanese and Asian region versions. The latter has English; unsure if the Japanese version has English or not.

There is no official reason but when the NISA president ran his mouth a while ago he said that SNK and Nintendo came to him wanting to make this a Switch exclusive. For some reason they couldn't make it full but they did make the NA physical a full switch exclusive.

FR
The game ran like butt on Switch until I got prompted to download a patch. Performance is now much better and it no longer feels so jarring, but there's still something 'off' about the framerate. Hard for me to tell if it is running at 30 FPS (it definitely felt like it before the patch) or the patch did something to get it to 60 FPS (with drops when doing supers). It at least runs well on the platform but I have a feeling PS4 is going to be the version to get.

Also have no idea if I like this game or not. It's very weird. Does not play like your typical SNK game- no crouching attacks, no overheads, no variable jumps, and a block button (wut) is going to take some getting used to, even with as easy as this game is to pick up and play. The game's simplicity makes Blade Strangers look like the most complex game ever made, lol.

Tried it undocked.

Bad news- the framerate takes a nosedive. It seems to be variable and has dips all over the place. Feels like 60 FPS one second then goes down to 30 FPS another second.

Is it still playable? Yes, because of the simple mechanics. Should the game have been released in this state? Nope. No excuse for this when other fighting games on Switch have no issues with framerates.

Disappointed again. Would recommend that anyone interested in purchasing this game hold off and get it on PS4 (assuming it doesn't have these issues).

I'd be OK with it being 30 undocked...if it were smooth, stable 30. It's not.

Well, that's disappointing, thanks for the impressions!
Probably too late for me to change my mind, but hoped for at least smooth 30 fps :/

When is the embargo up? Have there been any thoughtful positive hands on impressions of the game?

I'm a little scared.

I see positive things about the PS4 version. Just asked someone on my friends list, currently playing it, how it ran and was told it's a stable 60 FPS on there.

Thanks! I'll grab a thoughtful breakfast before I decide to read them. I've read quite a bit of twitter hot takes and hope the actual reviews aren't in the same vein.

Are there hot takes on framerate issues, though? Or is it just people just ragging on the game in general? I've decided I'm not going to rate how the game itself is until I get to try it on PS4. I have no doubt that the Switch version is that much inferior to it, performance-wise, at this point.

That's cool! I mean that sounds cool...

I hate when people block too much in fighting games. :D

This should be a good game to kinda put seasoned pros and newer players into something of the same pool for... at least a small amount of time! I'm cool with the idea of a fighter simplifying the growingly more obtuse methods around stuff. I wouldn't want this in everything, sure, but it's worth trying every once in a while! The game actually seems built around it's decisions, rather than being a janky beginners mode tossed into a game that can't support it.

And tossing items and psycological torture at your opponents with items should help with the blocking problem too!

I'm a little scared.

There's been a bit of a loketest in Japan, WNF with Hellpockets has had the game with public play for hours on stream a few times, and many convention-goers who have played it come away with a strong desire to play more.

The Switch Version is the only one to really be scared for... and if Abstraction Games dedication to patching the steam XIV is any indication, they should be willing to iron out many of the early issues.

SNK themselves has put out multiple near-30 min webisodes where the voice actor & actresses have played against each other and shown off features, too. They've already announced post-release support, and seem to be treating the game more seriously than many would have anticipated.

All of that gives at least SOME confidence.

Many people consider it an acceptable compromise for playing their favorite games at 35,000 feet.

I'm fine with the sacrifice in a game in which response time, reactions, and timing don't matter. I am playing Battle Chasers on switch even though I own it on pc for this reason.

To each their own, of course, but I would never consider this acceptable, especially when you have something like DBFZ showing that these concessions aren't necessary.

You can call in partner assist?

A guy was using Leona and called Terry to assist after a regular throw. Leona did the throw and before the opponent hit the ground an arcade machine popped out of the ground and launched the opponent again (while they were still in the getting thrown animation).

EDIT: Okay, I think this tag system will be deeper than people are expecting. There seems to be quite a bit to it.

For example you can cancel any move/special into tag so you can do Terry's power wave and cancel it into tag.

The incoming character pops in instantly and can run right behind his power wave at the opponent from across the screen.

As long as it's still playable enough on switch then I'll get it there.

I'm just looking to fool around with friends on there, not going to be taking it too seriously.

I'm currently putting together the Switch docked vs undocked video that will go live once the embargo lifts.

Was super ready to grab this but current financial woes suddenly are making me skip out on games this month. Interested to see more impressions.

Back from the dead since i could go through the game.
The undocked mode is not that terrible, i feared it would dip deep, but nha it remained playable and enjoyable for me and i didn't regret my purchase, docked mode could have been 60 locked :/
The game is a ton of fun, but it's a very simple/accessible one, i cannot wait to get enough "money" to put on the proper costumes... at least the originals are in there and not behind DLC paywall.
I wish it were still summer, it would have been a blast to play with my niece :'(

That was NISA, not SNK.

The studio behind both the Switch and PC port is the same one that did KOF14, so it's entirely plausible that SNK picked/suggested them for the job.

Who knows how much money went into the ports, or how big a pain in the ass it is to work with that engine. One would think a game as graphically unimpressive as this one would run just fine on Switch at any resolution.

Well my copy shipped this morning:P We'll see how things go one way or another :P

At least if they have/add stick support that will encourage me to use the TV more. That and earning the OG outfits will probably keep me busy.

This game screams "7/10" and that's ok
Swimming in 7's lol

What are the shortcomings of the Switch version?

Performance issues. The framerate appears to be 30 FPS (I'm not 100% sure on this, but it certainly doesn't feel like 60) when docked and in handheld mode, it's not as smooth and feels like it may possibly be uncapped, going between 30-60 FPS. If not, it's just not a stable 30. The PS4 version reportedly has none of these issues and runs at 60 FPS.

The Nintendolife review doesn't mention any of these technical issues and also doesn't mention online (saying it wasn't available), so I think it's kind of unfair to drop a review without having tried that part first.

I don't have proper equipment for this, but I think the framerate dips might be noticeable enough with footage from my phone. Let me see how it looks on Youtube.

It's much, much better on PS4- runs at a rock-solid 60 FPS. Am definitely returning my physical copy for Switch but will pick it up again if they can fix it.

Looks like we didn't get a midnight release here in Europe, anyone know the release time later today? Or maybe somewhere I could ask.

Edit: Nevermind, took a bit to show up but it's up!

I was already pretty down on this game based on the concept and the tiny roster (despite recycled assets!) but the performance on Switch makes this a hard pass.

Going from KOF XIV to this is a serious downgrade.

The only difference between the two will be frame-rate.

So the most important thing for a 2D fighting game. Got it.

Re: The framerate- It's not unplayable on the Switch at all, post-patch, but it just doesn't feel as smooth as it should be. If the framerate is doubled on the PS4, then there is no doubt that it will be the version to get.
PS4 version is going to be the version to get regardless.
