I'm not sure what this is supposed to mean. As far as I can tell, SNK has set the scene for the setting of the game. They've even said it was canon to the mainline story I think.

So it's not that there was something missing, just that what's there isn't big enough? It sounds like you want a bigger, more fleshed out Story mode? If so, is that really something you were expecting from a smaller, spinoff title like this?

Or no, it seems like you just wanted some new kind of gameplay mode that's different, without being sure of exactly what that is?

But, isn't the base gameplay exactly that?

I think a lot of people probably share your sentiment, though, which is a shame. But, that's exactly why fighters are as niche as they are, devs don't meet the expectations of the general public.

Like I said at the very start of this thread, its certainly disingenuous for us to expect to be surprised or given content that wasn't marketed(in that case NRS-esque levels of offerings as I responded to another), but its equally disingenuous to be reprimanded or taken to task for asking a bit more. To be surprised or intrigued by something beyond the usual staple of modes. I gave a couple examples of fighting games that offered content that drew me to spend money on with clear reasoning. In this case, the value proposition doesn't seem befitting. I'm not arguing it isn't the case for other fans(again read my first post).

The game will do ok I'm sure and limp across the expectation line pleasing players looking for a break from whatever other fighter they rotate. Or maybe it will surprise and perform merely on the merits of its fighting mechanics? But as this thread is proving, the ask is putting off quite a number of potential consumers.

Tekken's new season sort of put a wrench in my plans for this. I love the KoF roster so I might still get it, just wish the combat wasnt as simplified.

We gave it a meh. It's incredibly shallow and online hardly works

Had to cancel my preorder. Wanted to support SNK, but I can't handle the poor performance on Switch. I'll stick with KOF XIV for now.

The story mode has endings for all characters plus combinations, there is a character creation mode as well.
Sure this is not Justicr Gakuen/rival school evolution disk, but nearly nothing is. Costumes are not under dlc paywall.
Performance is not too distracting for me, but still a let down, i would have loved 60fps.

The story mode is a novelty. Nonsensical short little "cut scenes" and endings that are old-school in style, I.E. a few still pictures for each character. Nothing that you're going to keep going back to. There is no character creation mode- you can just dress up the characters and unlock various accessories to put on them.

I wouldn't describe this game as barebones, since it has all the standard modes you'd expect, but as a more "dumbed-down" party-fighter experience, it's not going to last very long for most people and if you're not going to be playing this multiplayer, I wouldn't bother buying it. Am hoping that there's going to be a decent number of people playing this online (I couldn't find a single match yesterday), otherwise it's just going to be shelved and forgotten about.

In this day and age, there is no excuse whatsoever. What the hell was SNK doing with the Switch version?

Outsourcing it to someone who did a sub-par job. :\

I think at 60 FPS it would still be a trash game, but I have no idea why most of the reviews are for the Switch version. For so many reasons that seems like the worst way to try to play this.

NIS America are pushing the switch version which ironic since the switch version is outsourced

Oof. That Switch performance is yeesh, so I would go PS4, but if the content is even less than SFV at launch, I'll have to wait for a deep discount. Back to UNIST I go!

Don't think I've ever seen a 30fps fighting game. What the fuck?

Why even release the game if it can't run properly?

Isn't that just the Switch version?

Yes. From all accounts, PS4 is 60 FPS and was developed internally by SNK. Switch got an outsourced port done by Abstraction Games.

Some of the older 32-bit era 3D fighters were 30 FPS, IIRC.

Last time I can remember playing a fighting game at 30 FPS was Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition for the 3DS- online play was 30 FPS. But that was at least a stable 30 FPS.

30fps lol. I'm ready for this day one, but yeah, I'm having second thoughts.

Just realized the Switch version was the only one that got a regular physical release, that's so damn weird

Wow.. I'm genuinely surprised that there wasn't an uproar about this one, but I guess that 3DS owners didn't give a damn or couldn't tell 60 from 30 framerates, which is weird coming from Capcom which gave us stable 60fps for UMvC3 on the Vita.

I will say the frame rate didn't bother me personally, it's the least of this game's problems.

Needs to be stated again that it's just the Switch version that has framerate issues. The PS4 version was developed by SNK and runs at 60 FPS. Whether or not that means it will play better online is another story. Am eager to test today!

The patch didn't seem to fix much in terms of online

Thanks. At least you actually managed to find a match!

I can see the potential for some more depth, but yeah- it's a pretty barebones "party fighter" and I don't think it's going to last for very long, if it even gets any kind of community behind it to begin with. I like the game, but honestly I had more fun with SNK Gals Fighters on the NeoGeo Pocket Color compared to this.

And to be fair, maybe the PS4 online is much better than the Switch online is?

Yeah I was about to say the same thing I remember playing BlazBlue,Injustice,MK9 and MvC3 just fine on PV Vita because those developers/publishers were more than happy to compromise visual quality to force the games to run at 60 FPS and I had a great time with those games.

wasn't the last DOA or TEKKEN 7 30fps games on consoles ? (didn't get them there)

anyway
the modes:
Character customization
Story mode
offline Versus CPU / Human/ Survival / Training/Tutorial / Local Multi switches
online quick / Room
Movies / Artworks / Sound clips + OST galleries
Fighting history / player and character records / stats
Language choice (untied from system)/ items frequency battle time and cpu level setting / Hud elements position / independant sound channels mixing
You can change the announcer and menu voice to any of the game characters or keep the Kool and the Gang original one

All characters have 3 costumes (the standard crazy one, the character's original one, and an alternate one, for example Athena deity costume from SVC chaos), and multiple colors.

There are 14 characters + Boss and no hidden one so far.
There are endings for each characters , the endings are shown minimized during final ending scroll but are full screen in gallery (and damn funny but textless/speechless for the ones i got).
There seems to be endings for 7 couples , but i didn't have time yet to get them.

The principle of life balance and simple gameplay is damn fun. it sure isn't a KOF, it's its own thing.

As to the reviews mainly being about the Switch version - Nintendo came off as a marketing partner for the game the past few months (having the trailers shown off in Directs and new character trailers showing up on Nintendo's YouTube channel either before or the same time as SNK's channel) so not a surprise that their system got the main focus for reviews.

NISA does it again. They sure know how to pick port studios.

Only NISA would send review codes for the inferior version of the game. What a screw up.

Here's some docked vs undocked footage:

I question your ability to grasp "depth" in a fighting game when your review doesn't show any complex combo. The game is casual friendly but it isn't shallow by any means.

Well, Gals Fighters was great. As were all the fighters on that gem of a system.
