Indies will embrace most platforms with open arms if it's an easy port.

No such thing as "easy port" in the world of indie game development. Indies will embrace a platform if it's financially sound to do so; Switch indie sales numbers and a very reasonable dev kit / license cost makes it a very attractive proposition... including for myself: I'm designing my game to be easily played on single joycons.

"Both Sony and Nintendo have been slow to jump into smartphone gaming,"

I don't know about this. Nintendo already has these:

Games
  • Miitomo (2016)
  • Super Mario Run (2016)
  • Fire Emblem Heroes (2017)
  • Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp (2017)
  • Dragalia Lost (2018)
  • Mario Kart Tour (2019)
  • Pokémon TCG Online (2011)
  • Pokémon Shuffle Mobile (2015
2016 entry into mobile gaming is extremely slow. Mobile games were blowing up many years before that.

what's it called when a ship has sailed, traveled all around the world twice, came back to where it sailed from, was there for a week so the crew can spend some time with their family, and then sailed again?
This ship has circumnavigated?

All seriousness, I would be shocked if Sony spent the R&D on yet another handheld, it would be like Nintendo spending the money on another Wii U2.

Maybe something to keep from handing over the Japanese market over to Nintendo without a fight. I think an appropriately priced, appropriately powered handheld to undercut the Switch could do very well. If it takes off in the West that'd be a bonus but I think it'd be brave of them in this post smartphone market.

Japan seems pretty good with they internet infrastructure. Are they getting 5G before the states?

I just don't see a new handheld in the news unless they could bring something that could play PS4 games natively (hint they means AMD).

I can see them trying out a Remote Play and Playstation Now device. Something like an android tablet with built-in or attachable controls.

Edit: AMD based handheld device with similar graphics capability isn't possible right now (CPU wise got to be already there or close I would imagine). Once 7nm hits and AMD outputs their ultamobile chips... it may be, but in 2020 or so.

If indies are using UE4 and Unity and a Playstation Portable came out next year with those supported engines, indies would flock to it. Especially if crossbuy/crossplay support was available for PS4 and PS5.

I think there's opportunity for Sony and Microsoft here. Not to create another stand alone console. Rather, create a cross compat device. If Microsoft and Sony can fit OG Xbox One and PS4 launch console tech into a handheld, there's a great opportunity here. Almost all next gen games will be scaleable to work at 720P, 30fps on this gen's launch consoles for at least a few years. All they have to do is create scaled down versions of new games and make this gen back compat to the handheld. Make them crossbuy, crossplay so you're not having to double dip.

If you could play Bloodbourne, MLB the Show, or Dark Souls Remastered that you already own on a handheld, wouldn't you consider it? I would.

That device cannot exist in 2018. Probably cant in 2020 either.

I think these threads expose how much weaker the switch is compared to the PS4/Xbox one. Sure it can run some extremely cut down ports of AAA titles, but it can't even dream of running most first party titles.

They are still selling the PlayStation Vita in Japan. But somehow they forgot to make AAA first party games for it like they promised at the reveal of the PlayStation Vita. So i would not trust them, and I would not buy any portable from Sony again.

Edit: Wonder how long it takes until they forget about PSVR?

It would be stupid for sony to not look into a new handheld after seeing the success of the switch but I think they know that they don't want to split focus onto two platforms again. I'd expect to see remote play get upgraded and with easier access. remote play app for ios and android? i know android had a version but was that for experia phones only? I have the mac app but i've never been able to get it to work. Idk how well playing PS4 games on a phone or tablet will work out though without a controller. thats the beauty of the switch is that its still slim with those controls. maybe we just get a special streaming tablet that has built in controls like switch but if its just for streaming then that seems like a waste and would still probably cost $200. I'd rather we got a portable ps4 but idk how they could slim it down and have a battery life though if sony worked with AMD to get it done then i'm sure they could get it done in the next few years.

Well, if they manage to get monster Hunter games on it, they have a shot.

More competition, the better. Just hope the price is more sensitive.

I'm still on board with the playstation phone idea. Only reason I didn't get the original one was I didn't have the money to switch to one of the supported carriers when it released.

It may be impossibe for Sony to make a portable PS4 hybrid soon but I think it would be interesting to see if they or Microsoft can come up with their own hybrids to compete with the Switch.

Portable PS4 (when that becomes possible), compatible with all digital games. I would buy that.

Disagree. You could create that device in 2020/2021, 7 to 8 years after PS4 launched. I don't think people are expecting that device to be available this year. Launching a year or two after the next gen home console launches makes more sense.

4K, 60fps, Ray tracing and scaled up physics will eat up the power difference between PS4 vanilla and PS5. You're grossly over-estimating the capabilities of next gen to think differently. You'll be able to scale down all next gen games for awhile. At least until they start to do revolutiary stuff with AI.
