That's actually really cool and useful, but I would be very happy If Xbox would also get a working 360/OG Xbox store as It hasn't been working for the last few days and I want to buy Destroy All Humans! ):

Does this mean Xbox one gets a new version of Skyrim as well?

Ever since I upgraded to an X, I've been mildly annoyed that the dedicated port for Kinect was removed, and AC cables to use it without them have been discontinued. I know you can just use voice over a headset to achieve a lot of the same, but it only supports the Cortana features, and not the older command system (which doesn't do data calls, but is much more responsive).

At some point, it'll be worth trying this out, but I miss the simplicity of being able to blab multimedia commands anywhere in the room while my hands are covered with honey or I'm falling asleep or whatever.

I can't see the tweet, what integration does it have?

Link to the article it references with the details so far:

Good. I still have my Kinect connected, but voice commands hasn't worked for months for me. As soon as I get off "Hey Cortona", she immediately replies "I didn't quite get that."

If it wasn't for the occasional family Skype call, I'd have disconnected a long time ago out of frustration. It's amazing just how much worse the Kinect works since launch. It worked so well in my setup in 2013.

This must be part of the Cortana/Alexa deal from last year. Very interesting.

Oh nice, it means it will actually work and you're not yelling at the Xbox to turn off before getting frustrated and just getting up to turn it off.

This is awesome. xbox has taken so many small but forward thinking measures this gen.

Sadly I'm scared we're in a the middle of an Hd-Dvd / Blu ray situation. I want to start adopting smart home tech but dunno yet which version will prevail.

I'm pretty sure the feature won't come to Germany...it's usually the case that Alexa skills only end up being available for US/UK (English). But anyway, nice to see such a feature being implemented.

I wonder if asking her to launch a game while the system is off will do both? That'd be pretty cool if so. We have a Dot in the same room as my consoles, so could be handy. Could also suck if my wife thinks I've been playing too long and turns it off from the other room. LOL

Heck yeah! Can't wait for this to come out of preview. I've wanted this for ages as I don't have any desire to own a Kinect nowadays. Should make watching movies and TV on my Xbox better than ever!

The Cyclone State
They need to release a small mic you can set on top of the console or something. I don't have a kinect cam and don't want to use a headset.
Or does this mean if I have an Alexa I can pair it with the Xbox so I can turn it on, etc?

Nice, as I more often than I should refer to Cortana as Alexa since I use Alexa more, and if it means getting rid of that brick in my entertainment center I need to use to currently have Kinect hooked up, that is another bonus.
Goodbye Cortana. It was real while it lasted.

When you try to link your account, this is one of the permissions you grant Alexa.

Access your info anytime
Xbox Alexa will be able to see and update your info, even when you're not using this app.

Edit: Or is this just for the app/skill for Alexa?

Edit 2:

You can't search for the Xbox skill (on your mobile app anyway) while it's in beta.

You'd have to go here.

For Xbox Insiders* in the U.S. who want to try the Xbox Skill with Cortana or Alexa, here's how to get started:

If you use Cortana:

  1. Sign into the Xbox you want to control.
  2. On your Windows 10 PC, click here and sign in with your Microsoft account to link the skill.
  3. Try your first command! "Hey Cortana, tell Xbox to open Netflix."
If you use Alexa:

  1. Sign into the Xbox you want to control.
  2. Click here, sign in with your Amazon Account, and click Enable.
  3. Sign in with your Microsoft account to link the skill.
  4. Let Alexa discover your console, then follow the instructions to pair your console with Alexa.
  5. Try your first command! "Alexa, start Rocket League."
*Note to Xbox Insiders: We will be rolling the Xbox Skill out to Xbox Insider rings gradually. If the Digital Assistant setting is visible on your console in Settings -> Devices, then you are currently eligible to test the Xbox Skill. If it doesn't appear, then please be patient as we are working quickly to add more Insider rings to the beta.

2 questions;

Can you not turn on an XBOX with the controller?

and if so,

Is it not far less effort to press a button than speak out loud?

An Xbox rep secretly comes to every owner's house at night while they're asleep. He whispers through the window, "Alexa, order all the latest releases" and drives away giggling. Microsoft wins the gen.
