Dammit, seeing people had died. For some reason I had the silly "hope" that it was disruptive but not costly or deadly, but in hindsight how can an earthquake that delays something like this NOT be both? Hope everyone pulls through that still can.

It seems a few hours have passed and i can't find any news of tsunamis , that's already great news .
Hopefully the situation won't get any worse with the replicas.
As for the direct , if they had to delay it, it's perfectly understandable considering the situation.

Given the way they say "this week's Direct" in the tweet, I'm guessing it's a bit longer than a 24 hour delay. Maybe pushed back to Sunday? And yes, the relative short notice of this delay could result in some third parties pulling the trigger on announcing games through other venues.

A weekend Direct is a good bet, as well. I'm still of the opinion that they will want to try to keep it within the expected marketing cycle to make the impact as small as possible on all devs involved.

Horrifying. Sending my love and thoughts to the millions effected. Nothing but respect for Nintendo regarding this matter. Take as much time as needed. Video games can wait and they are not important. This is not a matter to be taken lightly and will take time to get everything back together. My heart goes out to everyone in Japan right now.

I'm deeply saddened by how many lives were lost from this earthquake. I hope and pray and will contribute to helping with relief efforts as a whole. Now the direct getting delayed stinks but this is way more important then just a video.

My heart goes out to the families of the people that died I hope that those that are missing are found and alive im 100% ok with the direct being delayed at times like this video game news can be put on hold.

That would be a waste of everyone's time and money. The video is already done, they just have to release it (after some changes).
Yeah, I think scrapping the video is not the best way to move forward.

It would be way more effective to just air the video and add a donation segment where people could be asked to donate to help the victims.

Completely understandable. We've reset the clock so many times, what's one more? Good on Nintendo for doing this, it can't be easy to reschedule with so many shadow drops and 3rd parties involved.

It's obviously disappointing but there are so many Nintendo fans in Japan who look forward to these directs as much as any of us. Better to hold off until they can enjoy it as well.

An awful situation and kudos to Nintendo for respecting those that were affected.

It's terrible news and for a country only just rocked by a typhoon too :(
It's based off how we say it. Nobody says it's the 6th of September, 2018. Most people say it's September 6th ,2018.
People say 6th September, of course they do. People say both.

I don't understand why many Americans don't use 24 hour clocks either.

Hope no one complains about this. Video game news can wait. Rest In Peace to all those we have already lost.

Everyone else: Stay safe!

The splatoon 2 update for salmon run was delayed by a week according to dataminers, presumably to coincide with the new direct time.

Nobody says that in the US. Neither way of writing them is confusing, they're just different. It's not hard to adjust to either.

Earthquakes are terrifying, I really hope everyone makes it out okay. What a crazy summer for Japan, I really feel for them.

I'm lucky to live in the east coast of the US where the only thing we really have to worry about is some occasional hurricane remnants. I do remember our one big earthquake like 5 years ago, I was in my office and thought the person in the office next to mine was just jumping up and down a lot. I was convinced it was that until I heard lots of other people walking out of their offices.

In Direct related thoughts, I wonder how this is going to work with embargoes? We heard one guy talking about an embargo that ends Friday, and I'm betting there are several other embargoes that end today, scheduled to end after the Direct was supposed to air. Are they going to rework those NDAs or are we going to see random articles pop up about things that would have been in the Direct?

In my completely un-knowledgeable opinion, it seems likely to me that's a placeholder change made quickly to avoid any date issues.

Given that the communication of the Direct being cancelled was in the middle of the night for North America, I'd imagine they haven't coordinated a new date yet.

Since the main Direct thread was closed, and this is now the only Direct discussion thread...at what point will it be ok to start speculating/discussing leaks again here? Without people getting upset about insensitivities?

I think it was a mistake to close the other thread for this reason, but here we are.

Understandable. But how does stuff like this work with Nintendo's partners? Say if your game was set to be revealed during the direct and released in a not so distant future.

People on Twitter being cynical asking for the direct despite the tragedy that just occurred.
Truly inhuman.

Damn, I heard about the bad Typhoon but a earthquake too? Can't catch a break apparently.

All the best to anyone affected.

1000000% understandable.
Hope everyone who's missing in Atsuma are ok and may the relatives of those who died be in peace.

as for the new Direct date, let's see if we get an update as soon as they fell comfortable to announce it

I don't think it's fair to get upset over people speculating on whether the direct had problematic content related to this recent disaster.
Companies have delayed and cancelled projects in Japan due to real life tragedies. Something I think we can recognise and respect.
I think it's possible to show respect to the victims and to question whether this is a possibility in addition to Nintendo wanting to be respectful. As I said it's not like this is an unprecedented scenario.
The world we live in isn't binary there can be more than one reason for something.

It's absolutely awful what happened and whatever the reasons may be for delaying the direct I can wait as long as they need to. Fuck, I'll wait until October if that's what it takes. Hope nothing else bad happens.

Everyone that decides to showcase content in a Direct has to agree to certain terms. One of those terms is surely that Nintendo reserves the right to postpone or cancel the presentation at any time. It's precisely for reasons like this.

I woke up and a friend had text me about this, complete with links to some twitter shots and I immediately felt ill. Those houses just wiped out in the landslide...man. Stay safe, JapanERA. Our stupid video games can wait.

They have officially said it poses no threat for Tsunami's

While I understand why third parties could pull the trigger ahead, that would be kind of a shitty thing to do to Nintendo in that context, and it wouldn't be a good look I think.
My guess is that they are just gonna postpone everything for a week, and that's probably the best thing to do right now. I can wait for the Warframe shadow drop (still gonna happen).

Stealth keeps saying there was some insensitive footage in the Direct and Nintendo didn't have enough time to cut it so that played a part to the delay.

This sucks, but understandable. Thoughts go out to those affected. Hope the direct is still soon though, and that the damage from the earthquake is minimal
