I don't think speculation on the direct can happen in this thread, sorry Nibel, but the topic in here is about the Earthquake and just a notice about the delay to the direct, which absolutely needed to happen. How can we speculate about the direct with this context? I understand some people don't want to get on a hype train right now, and I have close friends in Japan who just got married a few days ago in Osaka, one of the best men is a friend of mine for the past 21 years, and was suppose to fly out a couple days ago, no one heard from him the past 24 hours. He just posted on facebook a few hours ago and is safely with the married couple, so I trying to see how what I just said can also share space with speculation on the direct here in this thread.

If the other thread didn't direct here, it would make a bit more sense, and closing that thread at the time does make some sense, but I think we need 2 separate threads for these very separate topics, or you guys as mods have to clearly just tell us not to speculate on the direct, which you're saying you want us to do. I am more saying this for the communities' sake, because we are a gaming forum, designed to discuss gaming news, and while all of this is going on in Japan, there are people who still want to discuss gaming, that is why we didn't close the gaming section right?

P.S. Sorry if this comes off rough, my friend and I just got off the phone, he was telling me about his experience the last 24 hours, he has anxiety and is one of my closest friends, so this just sucks and I'm a bit out of my element.

Hey, no need to apologize for sharing your thoughts.

This thread is not about the earthquake, but about the Direct that has been delayed as a result of that. The thread that is about the earthquake can be found in Etcetera https://www.resetera.com/threads/6-7-magnitude-earthquake-hits-hokkaido.66707/ and I would recommend using that for having a more focused discussion about it. As such, I'm fine with people talking about Nintendo and the Direct in here as long as discussion remains respectful and doesn't cross any suspicious territories.

Also, all the best to your friend and his family.

Good decision, the Direct is something which can come in second place. Priorities are other.

At the very least I'm thankful the Direct was announced and then delayed. If they hadn't announced it before pushing it back, we'd likely be up to our necks in conspiracy theories.

Thoughts with those in Hokkaido, can't imagine having to deal with the effects of an earthquake.

You mean there was an earthquake after the huge storm yesterday?

Man, I hope everyone is OK!

Thanks, I think I personally just need to take a walk. Good luck with this thread, I really hope trolls don't keep popping up, I can normally understand the delay of something like this getting people upset, but in this context, I don't understand it at all.

A friend of mine lives in Sapporo, and they've had no power since the quake. It wasn't a particularly huge one, but it certainly seems to have affected infrasture heavily. At the moment, they're just concentrating on keeping warm and fed until the power is restored over the next couple of days(?).

Japan literally can't catch a break this year.

I wonder if there was supposed to be an Indie shadow drop, what the devs would do.

Of course, but you do know that they also have to go through the entire video and make sure that they don't leave something insensitive in, right? Which is also why there's no definite date and time for the rescheduled direct. Not everything is a joke.

Maybe that could be the entire reasoning behind the lack of a new date but I doubt it. The simpler explanation is that, over the next few days, Nintendo's staff will have to re-edit the Direct to change relative dates (today, next week, etc), devise new strategies for games/updates releasing soon after the Direct, speak with third party publishers who may have been affected and work out new schedules for the no-doubt tens/hundreds of people who's work this week focused on the Direct. The Direct may be pre-recorded but a delay like this is in no way an easy thing to do.

Frankly it's best to just take the delay at face value as something done to respect the victims of this horrible event; Nintendo is a Japanese company, after all, so they have a lot more ties to this disaster than most of us here. Looking for clues as to the Direct's contents based on the idea that there may have been something controversial in there just seems insensitive imo.

I value people's lives more than a Nintendo Direct, so I believe this is the best direction to take.

I wonder if there was supposed to be an Indie shadow drop, what the devs would do.

With Thursdays typically being the eShop update day I wouldn't be surprised if something was planned, but I doubt it'd be an indie given the recent Nindies Showcases which would be better platforms for that. If it ends up being a first party title or a demo then I imagine they could push it back.

In japan it looks really bad for a company to promote their products after a disaster. After the big one in 2011, there were NO normal commercials on TV for about a month..all PSAs

Man, this is awful. Especially seeing Japan has had a few disasters already this year.

Can't blame Nintendo for the delay, think we'll probably get the direct mid next week.

Time to send Japan some real thoughts and prayers and also to send a screw you to anyone upset about the postponement.
Nintendo is absolutely right here and it just shows how companies can behave in a positively impactful way to society.

I lived a 6.5 earthquake on my skin (I'm from Italy) and I know how it is when your life stops while everything around you seems not to care and goes on like nothing happened. So I appreciate the delay from Nintendo, I think it's a good thing to do.

Stay safe Japan.

Awful to hear about the earthquake. A small delay for the Direct out of respect feels appropriate for sure.

Sado, I think it's a exageration for just a 6.7, bit I dientes check the news after they said the magnitude si I don't know if people died (a 6.7 should be a normal one for a country like Japan).

Can we not give these people any attention at all? Spend half a minute on this person's profile and you'll see it's being done for attention / a troll. There's hundreds of comments and replies with compassion and empathy but instead people are already picking up on the handful of assholes making dumb comments and saying "fucking gamers".

We can spend ten pages discussing how gamers are shit or we could just ignore it completely and move on. It's edgy teenagers and trolls looking for attention, nothing more and doesn't deserve our time.
That looks horrible. I can't imagine how it must have felt like. Hopefully the human damage can be kept to a minimum.

And for people who are cracking jokes about this... come on. Get a grip.

Fucking gamers.
I'm sorry for highlighting this, but yeah, the Tweet is a carefully crafted target to rile people up. A "strawman". Please keep your distances from it.

They announced it way before the earthquake happened.

Yeah the earthquake has caused a lot of damage. It's easy to fix roads, but finding shelter and support for displaced people is always a challenge and it's never enough.

A Direct delay may not seem like a big deal, but I bet a lot of calls have to be made today in case of any games suddenly dropping today, or even preregistration for Nintendo Switch Online. It's rumored that there are going to be new NES/Famicom controllers for the Switch, so any store that was planning on throwing up a preorder tomorrow has to wait. Delaying the Direct has to be a tough call to make.

The pictures and footage coming out of some of the damage has been crazy.

I really hope the worst of things have passed, I can't even begin to imagine how difficult of a week it's been for Japan.

I hope the hype train is being used to send up supplies and not just sitting in the station. Good call, I look forward to watching it whatever time it's delayed to.

I've lived 7 years in Japan and just recently left. I've been lucky to never experience any of these disasters, really. Condolences to those who lost someone, and good luck to those who will have to rebuild.

When 3000000 people are without electrisity and at least 10 dead and 140 injured I don't think it's an exageration.

Meanwhile, the assholes of twitter...

The tweet has 4 likes and 60 replies telling him to fuck off. I think sometimes we lose sight of the numbers a bit by giving attention to the idiots while ignoring that the majority replied understandingly. (Also, looking at his replies, the guy is a troll - still an asshole, but at least he doesn't seem to be genuine).

I mean, if this was a live event or a celebration Id agree.

If it's releasing some videogames trailers in YouTube I think it is an exageration. But I understand that Japan culture is different

Only you have to know the guy of the avatar to know this. Maybe the user believes he's parodying Andy Kaufman or something when he's embarrassing himself.

Disappointing for us not affected by the earthquake, but it's the only right decision possible both humanly and commercially.
I expect this to be aired the same day next week anyway, and hey, think about this: the wait for the flow of information after this Direct will be shorter than usual.

Also it's worth pointing out that ND Cube (Mario party Devs) has one of its studios in Sapporo, and seeing that Super Mario Party was probably going to be one of the main points of the direct, it might also play into the delay.

I think we know this and personally I see no value in sharing posts like this.

I respect Nintendo a lot for doing this. They probably could have still posted the direct, however it is important to pause and consider that there are many things in life more important than video games.
