Why is that? Even if it is $2?
The pinball tables in Pinball FX3 also work out to about $2-3 each.

Mummy Pinball and the others by this developer are shovelware tables made with a program called Pinball Creator for Unity.

I would recommend buying each and every table in Pinball FX3, The Pinball Arcade and Zaccaria Pinball before buying any of these. There's no shortage of excellent pinball tables on Switch for a fair price and even the worst tables in those programs are better made than these.

Very soon we should be getting Pinball FX3's Williams Pinball Volume 1, which will include stone-cold classics Medieval Madness, The Getaway, Fish Tales and Junkyard. These were tables that were removed from The Pinball Arcade on Switch before anyone could buy them and these new versions appear to be just as good if not better based on my time with the Steam beta.

I expect the 4 pack to go for $10, standard PBFX3 pricing, so you're getting faithful recreations of 4 of the best pinball tables ever made (well, I'm personally iffy on Junkyard but it's fine) for $2.50 each if I'm right about the price.

They also said to expect another Williams 4 pack before the end of the year with many more to come in 2019.

The thing is, with the online subscription and the NES games, plus 'Phantasy Star' releasing this month, plus 'Marble It Up!', plus I have already purchased 'Into the Breach', I only want to buy a Hamster title this month. And 'Argus' is looking at me. All the day I have been thinking in pulling the trigger, because well, I'm terribly bad playing 'Argus', and I don't have too much confidence in my skills to improve and learning how to play well.

Plus I have found this Youtube video with a 1cc run, in which the creator writes a phenomenal review of the game in the description.

And the more I read about the game, the more terrified I feel :)

So my dilemma this month regarding the Arcade Archives series is 'Alpha Mission II' with a discount, or 'Argus' to be completely destroyed :)

I bought Argus because of the cool logo/music, and because it's another TATE game to enjoy once that Switch grip ships!

The big issue I found was the lack of Dipswitch access. Gates of Doom is really unfair with the settings they lock the game to.

If you google it, you can find the manual for the Gate of Doom arcade machine. Based on it, the settings in Johnny Turbo are the default settings for the arcade machine, so it's probably as hard as most of the machines at the time.

I played through the game a few times and, though it looked pretty hard at first, I slowly began to understand it. Today, I can play through the first half of it without using extra credits. The game only starts to kick my ass in the second half, but it gets easier every time I play it.

What's everyone's take on Broforce? I loved the Early Access version and am curious as to how different the final game is.

I pre-purchased Shikhondo and I want to finally get around to playing Hyper Light Drifter but with Dragon Quest XI arriving tomorrow I'm probably gonna hunker down with that until I'm done. Lots of great games this month!

So, Hyper Light Drifter is up in the EU eshop. Has anyone already tried it? How's the port? I'm in the middle of Dead Cells and I still have to even try Okami HD, but this looks like the kind of game I'd enjoy a lot.

I searched through the eshop threads and the rest of Era, but I haven't seen anyone mention Epic Loon more than in passing. I like the look of the game, and the parody of the old movies, but am not sold on the actual gameplay. Anyone have experience playing it on the Switch? It's currently on sale for 50% off for one more week.

It's curious how this year, for a lot of early Switch owners, 'Celeste' has been the equivalent of 'Breath of the Wild' in 2017.

A game that focused all the attention and reviews, obtaining perfect scores and creating a sense of community with threads of people sharing passionately their experiences with the game.

And even after all this months, people still find fond memories of the game, and every time that anyone tries to make a list of essential titles this year, 'Celeste' is the first name to come.

That a small production with 2D graphics and without a budget for marketing has been able to achieve this, it's one the things that shows me how much has matured the video game medium since the dark times in the last generation, in which an increasingly rise in the production values of HD games focused all the attention, making irrelevant in conversations all of these amazing PSP or DS obscure Japanese titles, a lot of the Wii hidden gems because they were't big productions and a lot of the early exclusive digital titles.

Some small games like 'Braid', 'Limbo' or 'Etrian Odyssey' were fortunate to obtain this attention.

But it's also truth that form a video game history standpoint, the last generation was a graveyard full with the corpses of these small titles, eclipsed and ignored by the general public.

We still live in the narrative of a decline in JRPGs in the last generation, when we had one of the most brilliant periods for the genre, thanks to the healthy market for Nintendo DS and PSP in Japan.

And there are so many digital games that were ignored, I'm thinking in 'Fluidity' for Wii, 'Mutant Storm Reload' or the first 'Spelunker HD'.

I'm so glad of this turnaround in the coverage and integration of small titles, as a part of the narrative regarding the current state of the video game medium. In which games like 'Celeste' or 'Into the Breach', will obtain a similar place in video game history and are accepted and celebrated, together with the big hits of the year such as 'God of War' or 'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate'.

Maybe this is my chance to get 1st place on an Online High Score table!!

First impressions of Shikhondo, I'm disappointed. The graphics are all too small. There is no Tate mode. And the game has a nice, but invasive border on both sides of the screen. The action takes place in small window in the centre of the screen. All that flowery stuff you see in the screenshot, doesn't move out of the way and is persistent through the entire game, both gameplay and menus.

You can't scroll up and down or cycle through the scores on each individual ranking table.

And the game lacks sound effects. There's a nice soundtrack that plays but sound effects are few and far between and the tutorial takes place in silence. Odd.

EDIT: And I've had a moment where I died and the menu stopped working. Had to restart my Switch.

if anyone has any info or anything on the co-op in Hyper Light Drifter, I'd appreciate it. specifically, can you play the whole game from the beginning in co-op, and can you switch to single player at any point? and whether it's worth playing in that mode in general I suppose.

my partner and I played through Hollow Knight recently, passing the controller back and forth, and it seems like this would be fun in a similar way, but if the co-op is pretty good that would probably be preferable....

TATE mode has no sense in this game, because it uses a 4:3 horizontal layout, similar to other vertical games such as 'MUSHA' or 'Giga Wing'.

A 4:3 display is still one of the established conventions of the genre, it doesn't matter if you choose a TATE or a YOKO display. Because to use the full spectrum of 16:9 can make things too much convoluted.

Let's say that traditionally, you have two types of vertical shmups. Ones using a vertical TATE display, so in this case, a TATE mode is the way to play. But even with this, you will see black margins in the upper and lower part of the screen. And there are also examples of vertical games using an horizontal display, normally manufactured thinking in fitting in normal cabinets.

I'm really super into horizo-vertical shmups, so definitely, 'Shikhondo' has my interest.

Many thanks for posting your impressions because this a thing that I read in the only review that I have found of the game. That in portable mode, it's very hard to read the bullets patterns, due to the size of the screen. It seems a game more suited to play in docked mode.

How is the framerate, being a game made in Unity?

At this point, this is the thing that worries me. After the bad performance of other shmups made in Unity, such as 'RXN -Raijin-'.

If anyone is interested, I wrote some impressions about Hyper Light Drifter - Special Edition on the SwitchArcade Roundup I started doing for TouchArcade. This is from the perspective of someone with very little knowledge of the game coming into it, so these might be elementary impressions for most of you.

https://toucharcade.com/2018/09/05/...er-light-drifter-special-edition-impressions/

I think you were spot-on about the plot:

Everything from the visuals, to the ambient music, to the story that all plays out without a single word of dialog throughout its course is designed in this approach. Sure, I couldn't make heads or tails about what the hell was going on in the game's story, but I felt that the game relies on the player building their own interpretation of Hyper Light Drifter's happenings. That's the way I preferred it, at least.

There are many complex theories about it, but really, it's way more interesting to find your own interpretation, and I feel that not understanding parts of it makes the game more attractive.

Let me just add something that will fuel your interpretations: the developer has some serious heart issues. If you search about it online, you'll start making big connections in the game.

Thanks for the impressions, I'm curious about the game.

No tate is a big issue for me. I'm actually intrigued by the lack of sound effects that you've mentioned, because this could be a dev with a weird and different way of doing things... but it could also be just bad game design.

The biggest problem with the game is that everything is so small in Handheld mode. I've yet to try docked.

There's a "bullet-grazing" system that powers up your weapons and that seems a bit odd. Some real close calls don't build up your meter and other times they do. I like the setting, ancient Oriental monsters and it has a very nice look to it.

Sound Effects are weak though and that is an important thing in shmups, you need audible cues for everything that's happening and this lacks so many sound effects. Plus in parts where you expect the characters to be speaking there is no dialogue. With Danmaku Unlimited 3 there isn't any dialogue but then you're not presented with any characters. Here we have to protagonists we can choose and the bosses are (so far) represented by humans and there is no voices for any of them except from a few boss laughs.

Initially then this comes off as disappointing. I'm gonna sink a couple of hours into it on my work commute to see if the actual shooting system is good and enjoyable.

Now speaking of Shmups there is another chump coming out tomorrow called FullBlast. It was released on Wii U a couple of years ago and on iOS & Android before that. It's got a nice perspective to it but it lacks the manic bullet-hell intensity that I'm looking for in a chump these days.

Here's a review of the Wii U version:

Yeah, after reading your comments, I looked to a video with a complete run of the game.

The sound design is not "bad", but it's clearly inspired by the Touhou series of games, which tends to have a very different approach in sound design to your traditional Japanese shmup. They tend to make the sound effects less irrelevant, to create a more "zenny" experience, centered around dodging complex bullet patterns at slow motion, with your typical "focus mode" button. It even has the long sequences of bosses with transformations, in a pure Touhou fashion.

I always found the sound design lacking in these Touhou clones, in comparison with your typical and more juicy classic shmup, so I understand your exact feelings with this game.

Many thanks for all your detailed impressions. I still find cool to have a shmup with a Touhou approach in Switch. While this way of conceiving shmups is not my favorite, I still enjoy this branch. But seeing how the game is more suited to play in a TV, I think that this is other in the list of games that I will wait for a sale. Specially seeing that the game is distributed by Digerati. So this will have a 50% discount in less than two months.

Hey all,

I keep searching for this information to no avail. What's VC 4's performance and resolution on Switch like? Is it 1080p 30fps docked and 720p undocked or something better or something worse?

So how's the input lag on the ACA Neogeo games in portable mode? I'm tempted to grab Metal Slug during this sale but I'd like to know this before taking the plunge.

Damn, 'Monkey King: Master of the Clouds', other shmup classic arcade port, has seen a phantom release in the European eshop.

Before pushing the buy button, because I fucking adore this game, I need to know if the game includes a CRT shader with scanlines.

If some brave soul purchase the game or can find any video footage of this Switch version online, it will be really appreciated.

Epilexia has the performance of Black: The Fall improved at all since release? I'm interested in the game, but I remember you saying its performance is awful.

I'm not joking when I say that indeed, via patches, they made the game even worse in portable mode. I'm in a terrible setup writing from my GPD Win, as to be able to take my SD card to post some pictures, buey they made the game looks like MUCH worse and even more downgraded.

Basically, in the release day, the game was in a sub-native resolution, the lower resolution that I have found in a Switch portable game. But thanks to this blurriness, the game looked with some antialiasing.

In the last patch, they increased the resolution in some parts, being still sub-native, BUT they also eliminated any type of antialiasing. So now, the game looks even worse than a Playstation 1 early 3D game connected to a LCD television in some parts. It's like a festival of jaggies.

If you can live with the most dramatic graphic downgrade ever seen in a Switch game, including reducing a lot of effects and elements in the scenario respect to the Steam and PS4 versions, the game is perfectly playable. I completed this, without bugs, and I need to say, without slowdown. My only problem is how terribly looks in the handheld screen.

All of that said, playing in docked mode, the game looks good doing an impressive work in the art department. And while it's not the best cinematic platformer, because they completely dropped the ball in the second half of the game with an excessive use of puzzles manipulating mechanisms, and by completely eliminating the rest of things that the game does in a very good way, like the stealth parts... this is still an European cinematic platformer.

And to say to a fan of cinematic platformers, skip this game because it's a mediocrity, I know that it's not an option. And your desire of playing any game resembling 'Another World', will you make to push the purchase button, as I did, after reading all the terror stories regarding this Switch version :)

So my dear friend Arturo , I see you in a hell reserved for those that purchased this port of 'Black: The Fall' :)

Asia-Europe
Damn, 'Monkey King: Master of the Clouds', other shmup classic arcade port, has seen a phantom release in the European eshop.

Before pushing the buy button, because I fucking adore this game, I need to know if the game includes a CRT shader with scanlines.

If some brave soul purchase the game or can find any video footage of this Switch version online, it will be really appreciated.

I like you adore this game so I bought it in a heart beat....WRONG DECISION.
this port has been a major disapoitment. No display options AT ALL.Like 0!your forced to a windowed wallpaper all the time....no difficulty settings...and worst of all the game runs like horse shit in handheld mode. I'm traveling so haven't tried docked.AVOID until further updates. How hard can it be to mess this shit up.

Any must plays in that list?
Metal Slug, Fatal Fury 2, and Samurai Showdown are all great games that are just outclassed by sequels available on the eshop (just not on sale). Alpha Mission 2 is a really good shooter and King of the Monsters is a lot of fun.

The rest I don't know as much about personally, aside from Burning Fight being an okay Final Fight clone.
