I dont get all this smash hype. Are you just joking or is this game on same level as tlou2 for others?

Its pretty much same all those years and yet, you act like second coming is launching on switch in few months... for some time, i was thinking its some mass joking area, but it looks like you are for real in here.

I am not trying to make fun of you or whatever else. I am just confused. (I am not trying to joke so, please, dont @ with me "funny" replies).

Because Smash Bros itself is so versatile in term of gameplay and how people enjoys the game. Sakurai designed the game to appealing to everyone whom decided how they can play the game and how they would enjoy the game for multiplayer aspect, and it's often that the game is brimmed with too much contents. If serious players want to play the game, then they can just turn items off and play 1 vs 1 with legal stages and they can enjoy it. If people who want to get together with friends or they are at the party and they just want to have a lot of fun with the game then they can have 4-8 players playing at same time with items on and pick any stage just to have fun. It's mind shattering how he managed to keep it so versatile when many fighting games couldn't do it. I think it had a lot of to do with the engine being flexible to allows the people to decide the modes.

Now they just add more modes which is going to give us more choice therefore adding more to the game itself which already is versatile enough. Now we are getting stamina as one of the game mode (rather than special mode) along with special bar for us to fill out to get final smash (even it's weaker version).

Also Nintendo franchises branding is really powerful tool and allows Smash Bros to evaluated itself to top tier franchise since there are so many different games' fanbases would gather together to just play as their favorite characters. Mother fanbases could just buy Smash Bros so they can play as Lucas and Ness in their favorite Mother stage. Mario Bros fanbases could just buy the game to play as Bowser or Mario or Peach as they please to. That's why Smash Bros is amazing because it really had a lot of franchises crossing over in a single game where you could have a 8 player match with Mario (or Link or Pikachu) facing against Snake, Sonic, Mega Man, PAC MAN, Ryu, Cloud and Simon in many different locations that you can't even fathom to imagine, like Midgar, Green Hill Zone, Dracula's Castle, Dr. Wily's Castle, Saffron City, etc.

I have seen people said, now I have to buy the console and Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS when they saw Ryu or Cloud getting confirmed for Smash Bros. And some people were like Inkling is in Smash Bros then I'm definitely going to pick the game up.

Yes, not everyone from Nintendo franchise is the big deals as Mario, Link, Pikachu, Donkey Kong, Inkling and Pokemon but they contribute a lot of values to the roster by bringing unique gimmicks, raising more awareness for the franchises and revitalized the franchises (like Kid Icarus and Bring Fire Emblem to the West). Also they comes from historical franchises that made their marks in the past, like Duck Hunt, R.O.B, Mr. Game and Watch, etc.

I can talk more on roster and gameplay but I hope that I painted it clear for both category but now with single player contents.

Not everyone would agreed on Single Players but I would imagine that there are many casual fans that would enjoy single player contents. Smash Bros is filled out with so many contents that the fans would able to enjoy, like Adventure Mode, All Stars, Event Mode, Break the Target/Target Blast, Home Run Stadium, Story Mode, Smash Run, Smash Tour and many more modes that were spread all over the 5 iterations so they just happens to like it and keep playing the game. Some people would willing to 100% the game even it take them awhile but it make the game's value really huge. People can just play the game for long time. If you have Wii then pick up Brawl and play the Subspace (Story mode) where you could see how characters interacting together, or just watch youtube. That's one of most rare moment for Nintendo characters to be in single same game.

Also you have crazy amount of stages in the game (Ultimate is going to be even more crazy with the numbers). And there are so many music, songs, jingles, etc in Smash Bros where people can enjoy and listen to it which would explains why they are turning Switch into a music players for Smash Bros since they are going to have 900 musics in Ultimate.

When you see Sakurai with Super Smash Bros, you know that you are guaranteed for the ride. When we see Smash Bros franchise, we know that it's going to be very high quality game and brimmed with so many contents. Super Smash Bros Ultimate is going to be the biggest Smash out of all iterations because it's freaking ULTIMATE!

Sakurai really have a hardcore policy where he would package everything as he can into a single game without cutting anything to hold them for DLC, and he hate that and he despite that. Only time he had to cut the contents when they ran out of time but he offered them as free DLC afterward, like Miiverse and Youtube feature. He had the mentality where every Smash Bros is his last one so that way he would go ALL OUT with the production and try to make it good game for us to enjoy.

Yeah, people buying Smash Bros because they know it's going to be a good game, and it's often to be really quality game. And I really hope that my summary is helpful enough.

Also I will provide the urls for you to check out quickly.

Smash Bros where it begins.
Snake's CODEC about Nintendo Characters.
Smash 4 Hype Trailers
Story Mode (SSE) from Brawl
Break The Target Mode from Melee
Melee Introduction (even you haven't play Smash Bros before but this intro is must-watch tho!)

Psst, that's why it's always exciting to see which characters getting in Smash Bros because they would be fantastic additions (and if it's historical third parties, then thats' even more fantastic as well)

More smash? Seriously? We already had two directs for it, whats more to reveal for the game lol?

Things that haven't reviewed so far for Smash Ultimate

  • 4-6 newcomers
  • 2-6 echo fighters
  • 3-6 brand new stages
  • 10-20 Assist trophies (including old ATs)
  • 10-25 pokeball Pokemon (including old PBs)
  • 10-ish new items
  • Pseudo Adventure Mode (probably Spirit Mode?)
  • All Stars Mode
  • Spirit Mode (if it's not an adventure mode)
  • Boss Battles (optional mode?)
  • Smash Run
  • Target Blast or Break The Targets
  • Home-Run Contest
  • Multi-Man Smash
  • Master/Crazy Mode (if it comes back)
  • Event Modes
  • Training Room (I have a feeling that they might want to review more on that)
  • Online Mode (there is a chance there are many different things we could do with online mode this time)
  • Special Smash mode (did they ever went into it yet?)
  • Trophies (if it's back)
  • Records
  • Tips/Masterpieces/Album/Replay
  • Mii Fighters Costumes and Customization. (It just seems that they are avoiding to touch that subject for last two Directs so I guess they will have to say something bout it eventually)
  • Stage Builder
  • Share the Stages
  • UI and sidebar (to explain its' functions, like those mails as we see, which is friend invites)
  • Coop modes and features
  • Amiibo functions
  • More functions

Also I'm not convinced that Smash Tour would come back so I don't included it on the list yet. There might be more modes that we're not aware of. Also I hope that Sakurai would somehow surprise with an unique intro (or you prefer, opening) video for the game, like Melee.

With all the speculation of New Super Mario Bros U being ported to Switch in a Deluxe-style way, I can't help feeling it would be a better opportunity to do something like a 'New Super Mario Bros All-Stars' and include all of the games in the 'New' series. Give New Super Mario Bros (DS), New Super Mario Bros 2 (3DS), and New Super Mario Bros Wii (Wii) an HD coat and bring all 4 games (+ Luigi U) to the Switch in a proper collection. Or perhaps at least include an HD version of the Wii game so you have two games included to make the Switch version more enticing. Just a thought.

If we get a single casual and comfy game announcement this will be my favorite direct basically ever. I need a new one to play while wrapped in my comforter!

If the Xbox/Nintendo ad friendship has any real meaning they will announce ooblets and let me live my best life but I know it's just for show :(

When I say this, I am not saying it to discount or troll TLoU2, which I am sure will be fantastic, but Smash is unequivocally without question a bigger deal (or at least, as big a deal) than TLoU2. This is without fanboysm. Granted, they are two different genres, but although both are big event games for each respective system, Smash has a bigger footprint and potential audience due to its crossover nature and well established gameplay fanbase. If anything, more effort is required to get someone to get hyped for TLoU2 (a sequel to one game, needing to be a fan of its genre, and/or having previously been a fan of Naughty Dog) compared to Smash, which is a long running series (one per console generation) with appeal to fans across tons of different, mostly unrelated fanbases.

I still can't believe SSBU has so much content and it is still 60 bucks. If EA was releasing this, the game would be 200 bucks at least.

Don't exactly remember who said what but, from what I remember :
-Persona Q2 coming to the west
-3ds remake that reuse a lot of assets, like Paper Mario 1 or Color Splash remake for 3DS
-NSMBU deluxe, late october/early november release
-MK8 dlc
-Castlevania collection
-Final Fantasy ports, Jon predicted FFVII available right after the direct
-RE4
-Spyro trilogy
-Fallout 4
-a GTA or Red Dead Redemption 1
-Megaman 11 demo
-some N64 mini talk, they are not sure about it
-no Bayo 3, no MP4
-they don't think we'll see Yoshi
-Jon think we'll see both Pikmin 4 and a Pikmin 3 port
-Jon and Andre predicted Geno reveal for Smash
-Derrick and Ash predicted a Pokémon reveal for Smash

Edit : Ash also predicted a first tease for Animal Crossing.
They have also predicted the Mana collection coming to the west
They have briefly talked about Super Monkey Ball too.

Thanks for that!

Man, I would love for some Monkey Ball. Pretty safe assumptions all around.

Super Smash Bros Melee was like a little and beautiful museum of Nintendo's history, especially with the Trophees description.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate looks like the musuem of console gaming from 80s to early 2000s.

That's one of the biggest reason I love Smash. Reading the trophees description with games, consoles and time of releases, it's amazing. I can't imagine how many trophees Ultimate will get...

That would be ideal

Heck they can do a super Mario all stars 2 with a 64 Remake using Odyssey and the HD remasters of sunshine and galaxy games

Most of the stuff I'm expecting

- Kirby Star Allies final batch of Dream Friends
- NSMBU DX
- Some kind of Zelda port, Ocarina 3D, Majora 3D, TP HD or WW HD. Probably Ocarina or Wind Waker.
- 2 new Smash newcomers, one at the start, one at the end.
- 2-3 more Smash echoes
- Minor other Smash details they can fit in 5ish minutes
- New Pokemon for Let's Go and some more (old) megas confirmed for the game
- Birdo and Paratroopa release dates for tennis
- New Splatoon update
- Release dates for various already announced 3DS games
- Online service release date, final list of NES games and minor last minute details
- Some kind of trivial content for MK8DX for subscribing early that'll be available later as paid DLC (Toad colors maybe? Wedding Mario/Peach/Bowser?)
- Other surprises I can't think of

Can someone confirm for me if they said that there are still unannounced Switch games for this year? I feel like this was a thing that was said.

This discussion doesn't really belong in this thread and I'm not sure why the 2 games were chosen for comparison in the first place. I don't think it's as cut and dry which game will sell more or have the bigger impact though.

To be fair (and I hate defending them), EA is a 3rd party unlike Nintendo, so they don't get the full profit when releasing their games on a platform. It still doesn't excuse their practices but it's important to keep this in mind.

Nevertheless, it blows my mind seeing how much content SSBU has. We still don't know everything yet. This game seems like it's going to have tremendous value.

Well, might as well put together my ultimate wishlist of remakes, ports, and new announcements, and hope that at least one of them comes true at this Direct, two if the universe wants to be especially kind to me:

-Paper Mario/TTYD HD
-Mario Galaxy HD collection
-Metroid Prime Trilogy HD
-Bravely Default HD Collection
-Port of TP/WW HD
-Fallout 3 and/or NV for the Switch
-Fire Emblem Radiance Collection

-Animal Crossing annonucement
-Metroid Prime 4 trailer/gameplay reveal
-New 2D Zelda game
-FE: Three Houses gameplay
-Mario Kart stuff (either new game or 8 DLC)
-Pikmin 4
-Probably last chance for Odyssey DLC; if not, then I eagerly await Odyssey 2

-N64 mini with some Rare games included (probably won't be at a Direct)

You realize a game doesn't have to be fully revealed before it's released, right? I don't know when people became conditioned to this

Dillon was a localization announcement, but yeah.

That'd be nice to see.
But March 2018 was probably their best Switch Era direct, so I won't get my hopes up that high.
But I do expect a good showing.
