"Designated Survivor" is officially moving from ABC to Netflix for its third season, Variety has learned.

The political drama starring Kiefer Sutherland was cancelled by ABC back in May, but rumors began to swirl almost immediately that series producer eOne were looking to continue the show with the streaming giant. Neal Baer will join the series as showrunner for the third season, which will consist of 10 episodes. Baer will now be the fifth showrunner on "Designated Survivor" since it began.

In the new season, President Kirkman (Sutherland) will face a political reality–campaigning. What does it take to make a leader? What price will he be willing to pay? This season will explore today's world of campaigning, smear tactics, debates, campaign finance and "fake news."

"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play President Kirkman for season 3 of 'Designated Survivor' with Netflix, eOne and Neal Baer," Sutherland said. "I believe this format will allow us to continue to delve deeply into storylines and issues concerning the American electorate that were not previously possible."

I dropped this show during the 2nd season so I wasn't too upset it got cancelled. Good for those who stuck with it though and wanted it to continue.

2nd season was goddamn awful despite my unreasonable love for Kiefer Sutherland, though apparently that was due to a lot of behind the scenes issues. With a single focus, the show could be awesome.

I'm willing to give it a chance at least.

Oh wow. Was not expecting that. Thought it was one of those shows that would've stayed dead.

Worst thing about this show was that it was on a network that requires 20+ episodes a season. Here's hoping they can do what they want, and better, on Netflix!

has a show ever been picked up by netflix after being cancelled, and they added more nudity/violence since it's no longer on public broadcast?

just curious

of all the shows they could have picked up to survive...

I guess if they improve it it could be cool. I watched the first half of the first season and I just couldn't go further. It was boring.

It was pretty obvious, seeing they distributed the show internationally and seemed to be a success.

I'm glad it's being picked up, and even more so that it's only a 10 episode season. Cut the filler and tell a tighter story that doesn't spin off into unnecessary tangents.

Cool, I actually liked a lot of the 2nd season but the show definitely suffers from tonal whiplash sometimes. I never watched the finale after the cancellation news so at least now I have a "new" episode to watch before this new season.

I had no idea it got canceled; it's a trash version of West Wing but Kiefer Sutherland is magnetic and a fantastic character. Watched every episode.

2nd season trying to be the west wing was ridiculous. They basically chucked the original premise out.

season 2 was quite mediocre

The Killing had tons of profanity and violence compared to the TV version when Netflix picked it up IIRC.

There are probably other examples but I don't know.

The first season was pretty fun, but season 2 seemed to drag on foreeever. Having the third season air with just 10 episodes should be great for the pacing without the uninteresting filler that especially season 2 suffered from.

As long as it is not like S2, I'll check it out.

Season 2 was fucking hot garbage.

I liked the premise and the first season. The second season was just, so, blah. I'll watch the third season at some point.

Season 2 Episode 15 was absolutely horrible, and I've not been able to go past that episode yet.

I never watched season 2 but apparently the quality went down considerably.

Season 2 felt like a total different show really. I'm just glad we get to see the continuation of that cliffhanger.
I hate cliffhangers.

Unless they let him do the Bauer Power Hour and go HAM on a freighter full of spies/mercs, I ain't interested.
