Rhythm Heaven is one of the most creative series owned by Nintendo. The way it mixes a fast paced minigame roulette with mastering of rhythm gameplay is unique itself. Many games stick to the classic "select the song and play it" without giving context, others make rhythm based adventure games -- Rhythm Heaven is different in that it gives context to the music (usually through fun scenarion), but without being a story-based title, making for a more casual yet deep experience.

One of Rhythm Heaven's biggest strenghts is the fact that it's produced by Tsunku, a famous musician, composer and producer in Japan (he was the producer for the famous idol group Morning Musume). He created Rhythm Heaven together with Nintendo, making the music and rhythm aspects very high quality. You're able to play Rhythm Heaven even with yours eyes closed because of the musical production being so well made!

Sadly, the series, while big in Japan, always suffered from lack of promotion and support from Nintendo of America. It seems like the north american branch has almost no interest in several of Nintendo's more "niche" or unique projects and prefer to stick to promoting the classic Mario, Zelda, Pokémon group of franchises, limiting the potential of several franchises (see the poor support they gave to series like Style Savvy or Fatal Frame).

A big example of this mistreatment is how the latest release was basically ignored and sent to death by NOA. Rhythm Heaven Megamix was launched in Japan in June 2015... it only got a NA release in June 2016. Even worse, it had basically no marketing -- Megamix was announced during Nintendo E3's Treehouse live segment and shadow dropped for the Nintendo eShop with no physical release, which even Nintendo of Europe provided for the title.

NoA's lack of interest in promoting a first party franchise seems pretty unjustfied and based on a conservative mindset ("this is too strange for american audiences") considering the selling potential the series has. It's a multimillion franchise even with only a few entries, the Nintendo DS title alone sold 3 million units worldwide!

Tsunku had problems with cancer a few years ago and had to remove his vocal cords, sadly. Megamix was released after that, but I wonder if the chances of getting a new entry go down because of this, even though Megamix did pretty well (over 700K units sold in Japan alone).

A great way to show respect to Tsunku's and the franchise's legacy is for Rhythm Heaven to be promoted on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The game is all about Nintendo's all star characters and series and Rhythm Heaven just makes sense to be there -- it's a popular long running franchise with the classic Nintendo charm. It's also know Smash Bros can renew/grow interest for Nintendo franchises and a good representation could lead us to more excellent Rhythm Heaven titles. A brand new original entry for Switch would be perfect as it would keep the portability of the DS/3DS titles, while being a good party game in docked mode.

It's heavily speculated that a Rhythm Heaven fighter was planned and scrapped for Smash 4 (probably for hardware issues), with leftover data for a fighter being found in the 3DS version of the game. Hopefully people can show support to the series for Ultimate. Even if it doesn't get into the base roster, there's always DLC! Maybe this can show to Nintendo (mostly NOA), that it's worth to keep investing into such a fun and unique franchise.

Great OP, and you're not wrong.

Just generally speaking, I feel like Nintendo is missing a mainstay rhythm franchise.

I've never actually played a game in the series myself. Maybe I should try to rectify that, provided I can find a copy of one of the games out in the wild!

I found out about the Wii game like a week ago, due to someone streaming it on Twitch.

Game looks hella fun, hopefully a title comes to Switch at some point.

Not every game needs to be a multi million seller - TH already sells rather well for what it is.
More marketing wont necessarily result in bigger sales.

Megamix felt like a swan song to me. I wouldn't be shocked if Nintendo were done with it for the immediate future.

I just read "Rhythm Heaven" in the title and my heart skipped a beat thinking a new one was announced :(

One of the best series Nintendo has by far. I love all of them

Well, at least some marketing instead of a shadow drop during the worst possible time. A physical edition would be good as well too.

Being acknowledged in Smash or other Nintendo franchises would help a ton without costing them much. Sakurai himself said Smash boosts franchise's sales and he wants to keep helping these IPs.

Yep! It was their biggest effort in promoting it. And, even with the piracy hell that the DS was, it resulted in a lot of sales. It's strange to not see more support after that.

Great OP. Underrated Nintendo series that gets tossed aside, mostly by people who've never bothered to even try it. I feel less and less enthusiastic about it ever becoming something Nintendo cares about globally. At this point I can almost imagine Megamix being the last game in the series.

I feel like Tsunku's cancer put a damper on this franchise's momentum. :(
Coincidentally I just played the arcade game for the first time over the weekend which brought all the warm feelings flooding back.

The music being amazing:

And the art being done by Ko Takeuchi are enough reasons as to why this franchise deserves MUCH more support.

For sure. Glad that WarioWare Gold got a physical release, but it would've been nice for Nintendo to extend the courtesy to Mega Mix in North America as well.

Fully agreed, OP. The way they send them to die in the West is just shameful. Rhythm Heaven Fever was just amazing.

Games of these kind werent really selling on 3DS in the west - especially not at that price point. No amount of marketing would have changed it, so the eShop release and the localisation were already a sign of Nintendo embracing the fanbase.

Switch is popular enough that they could afford a retail release and some more marketing efforts - like on DS and Wii...but 3DS just wasnt the right plattform to try to throw money on these titles.

To the Band Bros fans, it's pretty cool as well. The music editor thing in Band Bros P was pretty cool, but it suffered a similar fate as Rhythm Heaven (even worse in this case as it wasn't even localized).

Do we even know if it was localized by NoA or NoE? I don't think at least a Direct announcement and a physical release is asking much. I'm sure if the Smash fighter was finished Megamix would get way more attention by NoA sadly.

I've always wondered how some of the older "bizarre" games from Nintendo actually faired and how they're sitting currently.
Stuff like Brain Age/Big Brain Academy were tons of fun, but now we have some other sort of silly fun games like Rhythm Heaven and even stuff like Tomodachi Life seem sort of out of favor.

Nintendo had way bigger expectations back then. The game was supposed to be the next big thing with the Touch Generations series alongside Nintendogs and Brain Training—instead it went to be sold for 10 dollars a few months after launch. The game was overshipped and had terrible legs.

You're damn right it does. It's one of Nintendo's best series and I feel like it could be more successful outside of Japan if Nintendo leaned into marketing the weird and funny aspects of the series more, kind of like they do with Warioware and Tomodachi Life. NoA's treatment of Megamix was so frustrating to see, I ended up just buying the Japanese version and homebrewing my 3DS to play it.

I'M HERE FOR THIS, OP, and I completely agree. Rhythm Heaven Megamix was the most exited I've been to download a demo, and then a game, in a few years.

I love the series so much, it's so full of joy and so creative.

Yet it's holding up better as a franchise than the Touch Generation titles (basically dead as the casual audiences left). Rhythm Heaven was always more of a "core title" than stuff like Brain Age and they didn't manage to market it well as that kind of casual, yet deep experience.

NoA gives up way too much in several franchises that have long term potential to be more popular.

That's more like Nintendo of America on the title than Nintendo considering how they treat the series on Japan, skips. You even said on your text. lol
Yeah, but Nintendo could help it worldwide by promoting it more. A Smash appearance, for example.

Never liked this series as much as Elite Beat Agents. I always felt puzzled that this series got multiple installments instead.

There are 2 other entries in the EBA series, they're just called Ouendan and are Japan exclusive. You can import them and play them on a NA/EU DS just fine though.

Defiantly was hyped when the 3ds version was announced, it such a unique experience and so damn fun to play.

Aren't the games insanely popular in Japan? At worst we can import a Japanese version even if it doesn't come to the west. The series definitely is not over yet.

Rhythm Heaven's a lot of fun, and honestly, I'd be surprised if it didn't get a character in Smash. There's no hardware issues to hold them back this time!

I blindly bought Rhythm Heaven Fever without any prior knowledge of the series due to the game being on sale for a few bucks and hearing good things about it on GAF. I was pleasantly surprised and now want one for Switch since I can't be bothered to bring out the Wii again.
