Literally an Echo Fighter of Ash with superior moves just because.

Needs to work on his nicknames though.

I think it's a tradition that Ash reaches the pokemon league and them makes friends with the most goober level kid he can find and then they have scarily chummy pokemon bonding.
Hoenn having the worst with some tubby ginger guy dressed in a bathrobe, pretty sure that was the last time I followed the series.
Don't forget he painfully jobs to them

It's like the writers forgot to introduce Richie earlier and tried to basically do everything in one episode... actually not that unlikely.

Ritchie is what Ash would be if had earned all his badges, nicknamed his pokemon, and didn't release Butterfree. Ritchie probably has a Primeape that he didn't abandon

I remember disliking this plot even as a kid. As an adult I can see what a writing copout this is, randomly introducing an Echo Fighter of Ash an episode before they have to fight.
Even though it was clearly building to Ash vs Gary until now. He could at least face a character already established instead of this clone thrown in at the last minute.

Yeah it was a major cop out. Having to wait till the next League to see them fight was a shame.

Ash should've taken care of business while Richie was sleeping. It's not like Officer Jenny was ever gonna figure things out.

To this day I never actually saw the conclusion to Ash/Gary (somehow have caught everything around it from sneasels guarding a flame to Blaziken socking Zard in the face).
Thus my balls have been Blue (ho ho) for many, many years.

I wonder what happened in the writer's room to make them delay the Gary/Ash showdown and do this copout story instead. Maybe they didn't expect to go for a second season and thought this league was the finale.

If I were Ash, I'd have been fooled by a plank of wood looking like Ritchie as well, it conveys the exact same level of character.

I am laughing too much at this Team Rocket plan, it is amazing. It helps that Twitch is spamming 'Jebaited'

Delaying the Gary showdown actually suggests they knew they had years ahead of them.

Okay back in time for Ash's clone to beat Ash. Why the fuck did Team Rocket decide to fuck with Ash now?

I don't get why people are so angry about an unknown trainer beating Ash.
Because the series was very clearly building up to Gary vs Ash as the big battle, only to copout and have Gary borderline eliminated offscreen, then suddenly introduce a cheap copy of Ash just for the purpose of beating him.T hey also do that annoying thing where a brand new character is introduced and after like one conversation they're suddenly sold as being their best friend just to force a "friend vs friend" ending.

It's very cheap, in short.

Delaying the Gary showdown actually suggests they knew they had years head of them.
They were still building to that match as recently as a few episodes ago. Given they follow this up with a filler arc in the Orange Islands which isn't in the games it suggests to me they weren't ready to jump into Johto.
