Just moved here and I know, video game depictions aren't necessarily/designed to be accurate, but just like playing Watch Dogs 2 while living in the Bay Area or GTAIV while in NYC, it's a fun experience.

Yeah Watch Dogs 1 tried to capture Chicago but does a horrible job and it really feels like a generic city minus a few landmarks.

As a Chicago native I had high hopes for Watchdogs given how good Ubisoft usually is at capturing cities, but that was not Chicago. Was really disappointed in that effort around capturing the city.

Canadian developers being (I assume) forced by publishers to do American cities for marketing reasons needs to end. Let the game take place in Montreal.

Yea Watch Dog's take on Chicago was reaaallllly bad. Loved the mountain rage right next to downtown! There sadly isn't any good modern takes on our city yet from what I've seen.

Don't forget the fact that the entire North Side was underwater. Y'know. The lake north of the loop. Lake Lincoln Park.

Chicago
Yup. Because when I think Chicago, I think the Bean, the South Side and...the west suburbs? What?

Ubisoft couldn't even be bothered to put Wrigley in there. Much less any of the actual North Side.

Oh they had Wrigley tho, it was just something different and it was on the west side 'island' LMAO.

They couldn't even do the south side right.

For reference for the people who haven't played:

WD's Chicago:

Actual chicago

They literally obliterated the north side and made islands out of the west and south side lmao

True story: I traded the game in after two days because I was just that disgusted by how bad their Chicago was. I wanted to hack the security system at an improv theatre and scare a bunch of comedians.

Chicago
I wouldn't have been really that bothered if Ubisoft went GTA about it and just called it anything BUT Chicago. It would've been pretty clearly evident that they were heavily influenced by it same way Liberty City is or San Andreas.

But all of the promotional stuff leading up to WD was talking about how detailed and realistic THIS next gen Chicago was going to be.

It was horrible.

If you aren't worried by inaccurate depictions of Chicago, there's plenty of great picks.
Lethal Enforcers is set entirely in Chicago. John Woo's Stranglehold shares locations between Hong Kong and Chicago. Rampage: Universal Tour lets you destroy the then Sears tower in one stage. Driver 2 starts off at a bar in Chicago. Crimson Skies mission "The Windy City" surrounds flying around a modified iteration of the city.
My Eyes On You isn't released yet. It looks interesting and explicitly mentions Chicago by name in its trailer.

There aren't any "authentic" explorable representations I know of, but two very great "British people without internet access imagine what Chicago might look like" portrayals of Chicago are:

Yea 20-year veteran of Chicago and I was really disappointed at WD1 depiction. Landmarks are not really great representations(licensing?) and the entire city layout was just so off that it was a headache to parse it out.

At the time PGR2 was kind of a neat glimpse at a somewhat accurate few downtown courses. My old apartment building was rendered in the game even! But it's a racing game on set tracks running in and around the loop.

MK9 had a nifty stage set in Chicago actually. Basically fighting on one of the river bridges downtown. Midway was once based in Chicago during the old MK era so it was a nice shoutout to have a stage obviously set there.

Not gonna lie, I completely forgot about WD1 being set in Chicago, but based on comments here, it's probably for the best.
