Bummer that it sounds like it suffers from traditional open-world problems, but I was fully prepared for that outcome. Still hopeful that it will be fun and engaging enough in spite of those shortcomings.

It really won't, it'll review well just like the other entries.

It most certainly won't. KH3 will get countless more reviews than KH1 or KH2 ever did. It's going to land somewhere in the mid 80s is my guess because it's a AAA game from Square in the HD era that isn't one in which they're just a publisher for, since those are usually their highest. That's just my guess. You can have your own view without harping on mine.

Our 3,400-word, spoiler-free review also went up at 10am: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2018...iew-does-whatever-a-spider-can-and-then-some/

Spider-Man, above all else, is compellingly imperfect.

I never felt an urge to skip a cut scene or chunk of wonderfully performed dialogue, even as I agonized over how obvious and predictable the plot was. I kept wishing Insomniac had sprinkled one more touch of mechanical-gameplay salt onto the familiar superhero-combat formula, even as I relished some of the game's best beat-'em-up sequences and eye-bulging boss battles. And while the game would sometimes grow stale as it prodded me along with repetitive side quests and awful puzzle interruptions, I couldn't help but swing, swing, swiiiing my way across virtual Manhattan again and again, always feeling like there was just enough fun to keep me hooked to my webs.

IGN said 15 hours of time, with side quests and just web zipping around. Is that supposed to be the average then? I was kinda expecting it to be much longer

It's longer for sure. I swung around the city and did side-quests / explored in between main story chapters, and I'd say it was about 22-23 hours before I saw credits roll. I've spent a few more hours in the game since then, and I'm at about 85% completion for the entire map in terms of side-quests / collectibles. There's a ton to do and to collect, and if you're the type of person who, like me, enjoys just swinging around and having fun with no specific objective every once in a while, you're going to get much more mileage out of this. Certainly much more than 15-20 hours. Perhaps double that.

I expect most of you will be wrapping up with side content around the time that the first DLC drops, which I'm looking forward to very much. People who can take off work, or who don't have responsibility to family, who can play for uninterrupted hours at a time for multiple days in a row, may finish it long before then.

From June 2016: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2016-06-15-spider-man-leads-marvels-epic-new-console-strategy

Marvel's Jay Ong said:
"We've had a long history of success with Activision, and we still have a great relationship with them," Ong said. "But the future of the Spider-Man console games is with Sony and Insomniac. We're delighted about this partnership, and that's something that's going to continue forward. With [regard to] other console partners, stay tuned. There's many more interesting additional things to come. But Activision is in the past, with regards to Spider-Man."

You know the game is good when you see a sequel port begging before the first game even comes out.

15 hours seems a little low to me, but I did all the side missions and got a good amount of the collectibles and there wasn't an in-game hour count that I noticed; I'm pretty bad at keeping track of that stuff without it.

I find it a bit strange how people are posting that they're happy with the fact that it's the "best Spider-Man game", as if that's a high bar to clear. They seem relieved! Like, has there ever even been a Spider-Man game that's better than mediocre? Treyarch's Spider-Man 2 from 2004 appears to be the only one that's come close and even that wasn't a particularly good game outside of its web-slinging.

Sony dealt with Marvel in the 90s for the movie rights. They dealt with Disney for the game rights. If you don't know the difference in negotiating power between the two, then I don't know what to tell you.
If you think Sony are throwing probably north of 100m dollars (with marketing) into a 1-off Spidey game for Marvel/Disney to take away, I don't know what to tell you either.

Spider-man getting some great scores. I have absolutely no regrets about my pre-order.

However, the real winner in this thread is the term musclehead brawlers which I hope has a long future here on Resetera.
