Honestly, fantastic analysis Dark1x , it's impressive how much Insomniac is capable to do with its engine, it's almost magic.

Could you expand your impressions on the game? I know at the end of the video there are some impressions, but I would like to hear more of your experience.

Are there any HDR settings? Paper white etc?
Ah, unfortunately, there is not. Just a brightness adjustment. On my particular set (C8 OLED) it looks fantastic *BUT* I could see issues arises depending on how your TV deals with it. It's definitely not the best example. We'll be releasing an HDR video this Thursday as well, by the way.

Really awesome that they're using dynamic res in conjunction with their awesome temporal injection method. I really hope that sort of thing becomes commonplace in the future. Excellent image quality without throwing away a ton of GPU resources. I want to hear a lot more about how Insomniac achieved it because it's a great method.

Over 30 minutes! I'll be updating the OP as I watch.

- Final game has identical texture resolution to the E3 demo. The Spiderman suit material changed (E3 suit was glossy). An artistic change, not technical.
- Per-pixel motion blur. Best implementation they've seen to date. Adjustable in-game.
- No checkerboard rendering on PS4 Pro, uses temporal injection technique used in Ratchet and Clank.
- Adaptive resolution on PS4 Pro. Ranges from 3456x1944 to 2560x1368. Hitting that low point is "extremely rare". Average resolution is 2816x1584. Upgrade from E3 demo which was 1440p.
- Base PS4 also uses adaptive resolution. Most of the time it's 1080p but can hit 900p.
- Building reflections blend between four cube maps depending on height.
- Missing puddles not due to performance issues. Artistic change. Reflection cube map changed from the one used in E3 demo. DF hypothesizes it would have been difficult to re-adjust puddle placement taking the change into account.
- Puddle reflections work the same as they do in the E3 demo.
- Uses volumetric lighting with great shadow quality and ambient occlusion.
- Cars use different types (incandescent, LED) and colors of headlights. Attention to detail overall is pretty nuts.
- Traffic and pedestrian density appears higher in the final game.
- Slight shadow differences in the final game vs the E3 demo. Looks more realistic in the final game. Overall more lighting/artistic differences.
- Texture detail, building interior detail, reflections, and lighting are better in certain scenes in the final game vs. the E3 demo.
- Runs at solid, stable 30fps on both PS4 and PS4 Pro "99% of the time". A dropped frame or two can happen. Motion blur adds to the smooth experience.
- Some scenes require loading. Relatively quick (< 10 seconds).

Put this in your OP:

Here's Digital Foundry with the last word on Spider-Man's supposed downgrades. "What if we told you it's been upgraded instead?"

Talk of downgrades are just silly when you see what this game is doing visually, even on a 5 year old console. On the Pro it is something else. Crikey I don't even know what to expect on the next gen, this gen surpassed anything we could have imagined when you look at this or TLOU2 and so on... Ooft.

Sure.

My favorite super hero games to date have been, honestly, the Batman Arkham games. I did quite enjoy Neversoft's take on Spider-Man, though, and have had some fun with other Spider-Man games but they always felt somewhat barebones/unrefined.

I'm not sure Spider-Man replaces Arkham for me but it's definitely on that level.

I appreciate the reliance on bespoke mission design with interior spaces and lots of unique mechanics. There's some good variety in the mission design and lots of shifts between gameplay types including Arkham-like stealth sequences, great chase sequences, traversal, combat, boss fights and more. Lots of gadgets and fun things to play with too.

The actual controls feel remarkable and I believe the game solves a major issue with open world games that I've always had - that being traversal. In many games, just driving or walking to your next objective marker can be moderately enjoyable to kinda boring. The swinging in Spider-Man is SO good that I often found myself not making a bee-line to the next objective. It made going between those points really fun. There's a lot of little side things you can do along the way - something I normally don't care about - but because the mechanics feel so great to use, they actually became worthwhile.

The other major surprise for me is the story - it's really engaging stuff. Like, far and away the best storytelling Insomniac has ever produced by a country mile. The characters, writing and acting are all fantastic and charming.

From the very first moment the game was shown it looked impressive. Awesome to see Insomniac deliver on the final product. They did a great job of making the city feel alive.

Also appreciate John's honesty about the E3 2017 puddle room looking better than the final. I definitely felt that way too, even though the overall game is still very impressive.

So there is a upgrade instead of downgrade ? lol

Next stop: "the game is actually not as good as the hype led me to believe" "boring, repetitive game featuring generic Sony formula" etc.

Can't wait for the release of Days Gone and Ghost of Tsushima ;) especially the first one will get many concerned citizens chiming in, it's the first Sony game in a long while I'm not too confident in myself though, it'll still be a very good game I'm sure, but could be the "worst" out of the 1st party lineup since The Order, hope I'm wrong.

An open world game with stable 30 fps and faster loading screens on both PS4 and PS4 Pro? How tf?

Amazing lol, how spoilery is the video ? DF tends to spoil a lot and it's annoying.

Well I was anticipating a spoiler, and started to click away, but not before the video shows someone that was probably left out of the trailers intentionally.

Probably only an early game thing, but this close to release it's probably worth avoiding.

This sounds sooo good. Thank you very much, I also think Arkham is the golden "standard" for superhero games, but the potential that a superhero like Spidey has with such an amazing studio as Insomniac is enormous.

Really interested in the story, the prequel novel was pretty good, and most of the story shown has looked really interesting.

Please, let it be Friday already.

Great work, Dark1x

Hopefully people will calm down with all the puddle-gate nonsense now. Loved all the water puns in the video, btw XD

Just finished the video.

Some parts of the game were actually upgraded.

Adaptive resolution is disappointing, but Insomniac's use of temporal injection seems to help.

Can't wait to play!

I'm confused, those resolution's mentioned in the video are before TI injection or after?

I just want to see a few peeps come and eat some crow, cause honestly that thread was a shit show then and if you go back to it would be even more of a shit show now.
I expect this thread to be pedestrian.

Gosh, it was difficult to read all those comments knowing how amazing the final game looks. Can't imagine how frustrating it must have been from your side. You guys nailed it, though! Well done.
I'm not sure I could have shown that much restraint.
