I believe the current record holder is Gran Turismo 3 at 14.8m.

so let's get a poll going.

OP The Last of Us was announced not that long ago as having sold 17+ million copies. I believe that is the current record holder.

As for the actual question: If it reviews really well then yes I could see Spider-Man becoming the best selling game for them due to the fact that it has a mass appeal that The Last of Us and God of War don't. Spider-Man will be a massive seller this Holiday if reviews are good.

the potential sales for Spider-Man is stupendous. If it ends up being as good as it looks, it could be insane. That said, PS2 era sales might be tough given that PS4 even as far in the lead it is, it's the not quite the behemoth that the PS2 was..

It certainly stands a chance, but the highest-selling EVER? It would need GTA-level legs for that.

I'm not sure any first party game can muster GTA legs, but if any could, it would be Spidey.

Not after all those canceled pre-orders from the lack of puddles and cut content turned into DLC /s

If Miles was younger and Peter was Spider-Dad I think it would take the number one spot but I don't think anything is touching that until TLOU 2.

i dont follow sales too much to comment, but everything i've seen about this game, it does massive numbers on hits/views/etc.

people have been wanting a game like this for a long time.

it's going to do bonker numbers.

if it gets the word of mouth positivity going around after reviews hit, oh boy.

Yeah, I'm not sure counting TLOU is fair.

Either way, I'm not sure if Spidey can surpass GT.

I don't know if anything is beating TLoU's record due to the remaster being a huge deal on top of the original release. It's going to be big though and suspect it'll have a lot of legs.

It's entirely possible that it'll get the TLOU treatment and get a big, highly-publicized PS5 port. We are getting up to that point in the generation now, after all.

Not sure, but I think God of War has a chance of beating GT3's numbers by gens end. It sold 5m in a single month and based on recent trophy and stat data, it could already be at around 10m, in just four months, so imagine what it might be in a few years time.

When all is said and done, I think this gen Sony will have several exclusive 10m+ sellers.

It will definitely hit 10 million. Whether or not it can close out another 5-10 million over the next year or two I'm not sure, but honestly, I think that it can.

Hell yeah. Spider-Man's the biggest superhero on the planet. People will buy their kids PS4's just for this game. Wait for Holiday season, it's gonna be nuts.

"No, it will bomb (under 5m)." as one of the poll options made me do a spit-take. Success is relative to each title, but a single-player AAA game on one platform selling 4M copies doesn't sound like a "bomb."

That being said, I imagine it finishes out the calendar year doing 5M-6M units and will have lasting appeal through the end of the generation as a gifting title at $40.

Realistically, 5-10 million, then a PS5 update and possible retail repackage for the game on that console will push it past 15 million.

Not really relevant tbf.

This new one is a whole different beast compared to the other Spiderman titles.

I feel like precedent and reach are a little more relevant than trying to build a sales algorithm based on hype. If we're just going off gut feelings I feel like it'll do better than the Activision clusterfucks based on marketing, prestige and positioning alone, but it also feels a little weird saying that because I have no idea how those games actually sold.

I expect Spiderman to sell at least 10, and to likely outsell God of War (provided it reviews well i.e. mid-80s+), and probably become the best-selling exclusive this generation. However I do think it'll fall short of GT3.

With God of War currently at 9 million players, I imagine it will ultimately sell about ~12 million. Spiderman will sit somewhere between ~10-14 depending on reviews.

5m is a bomb on a console only game? Did Square Enix make that poll? I figure 3-5m and will be a success
