I wonder what are the ethical implications of reading loli based mangas to ward of paedophilia tendencies though. :|

I really shouldnt be thinking too much about it, aren't I?

In terms of psychology, I am kind of interested in an exploration of this idea with actual science, but anecdotally I don't think it holds up. I've never heard of anyone seriously saying that they had trouble with violent tendencies that videogames or violent comics help satisfy. Never anyone saying that they felt they had rape tendencies towards real adult women curtailed by the existence of rape porn where people act out a rape fantasy.

It's only ever pedophiles who seem to assert that a fictional representation of their fetish is something that satisfies them and prevents them from taking the next step into true reprehensiveness.

Welp. I stopped reading during the final arcs but that sucks. Loved reading his work when I was a kid.

All my life I bought only one fucking wall scroll. A Kenshin wall scroll. Obsessively read Kenshin manga, loved Tsuioku-hen and the sometimes odd but pretty nicely-faithful live action movies.

THROWING ALL THAT SHIT IN THE GARBAGE. FUCK.

I-I never even liked Kenshin all that much anyways! *cries*

Someone should probably have a look around the ToLoveRu author's office, cause, y'know...

Reading the responses by Japanese fans on Twitter is what's really killing me right now. Yes, there's quite a few people who are actually disgusted, but it seems like more commonly people are just concerned about what will happen to the revival. Japanese consciousness is really in the early years of dealing with this problem, and there's quite a long way to go.
There are also so gross comments like "why is that a crime?" or "I like girls that age, too." There are also jokes.

Translation for not Aeana people: "The Hokkaido arc may be delayed, but the Abashiri Prison arc is starting!"
Abashiri Prison is an infamous Meiji era prison in Sapporo, Hokkaido.

Well...I'm not going to be a hypocrite and chastise people for making jokes. When the Jared Fogle business went down I laughed at the "footlong in prison" jokes too.

Saw this coming. This is a country where large teams of men are creating and drawing content starring underage girls in bikinis and underwear that are getting into adult situations. It is being bought, idolized, and lusted over by millions of Japanese men. Instead of going on actual dates and developing healthy social lives. It's creating a creepy pedo culture that's probably far more widespread than any of the harassment crap going on here in America right now.

Stop idolizing anyone.

What Watsuki did here is clear. There's nothing to misinterpret. It sounds like you're gauging your reaction based on how the law applies, rather than what he actually did, which is... ???

I'm sorry I wasn't clear. ^^; I didn't mean to cast doubt on what Watsuki did: he admitted to liking children and had child pornography--he's done as far as I'm concerned. I only wanted to write about CP laws in general, specifically "simple possession" as it pertains to Japan, and the criminal justice system here since it was there was some confusion whether he was arrested, charged, or otherwise.

edit: Again, not to derail the thread, but because I became curious about those two things when I read the article for myself.

Here goes another fucker I idolized. Getting sentence for just a year is absurd and what's more absurd is that child porn became illegal in Japan only in 2015..

Maybe I confused with one or another, I know the Rurouni Kenshin Hokkaido arc is the current one, but what's Abashiri Prison arc? Is that from Golden Kamuy manga?

I read an article about whether virtual cp would help pedophiles fight urges for real kids. Psychologists didn't seem to believe so, but I doubt much research has been done on it.

(The joke is the author is going to prison)

Sadly it seems like even if he does go, it won't be for long but yeah. That's the bit.

I believe the joke lies in that Kenshin takes place in an era when this infamous prison was operating in Hokkaido. This is where the manga author would go, while Kenshin has his Hokkaido story delayed.

Yeah, joking about something awful isn't inherently terrible, especially jokes mainly directed at the mangaka himself. The problems start when the jokes are geared toward forgiving or enabling the crime (for example, see Affleck's Wienstein joke about including more female characters in the movie)

The comparison with rape is a bit disingenuous, the argument would be that heterosexual men don't rape women just because they're not having sex, instead they use porn to relieve themselves of their need.

The difference being that heterosexual men could theoretically have consensual sex at some point, while that's not the case for pedophiles.

Unfortunately there's no real science behind it and I doubt there will be anytime soon, as it would involve tracking pedophiles for long periods of time and you'd be hard pressed to find people to participate in such studies.

This fucking blow. Rurouni kenshin is ine of my early shonen manga :/

This is one case where it really weird since Nobuhiro Watsuki rarely draw fanservice. One of the few clean jump mangaka.

That's part of what makes it the more surprising, there are a number of authors who have displayed such tendencies but Watsuki (as far as my knowledge goes) is not one of them.

The comparison is not heterosexual men, but people who have a rape fetish (which could theoretically include homosexual men, or even women). As in, they do not want consensual sex, they want rape. Straightforward consensual sex does not relieve that. Hence people with that fetish who are responsible ask for role-playing, which is consensual sex that pretends to be a rape.

So the comparison is more along the lines of a rape fetishist who is saying "if I don't get a partner who will roleplay a rape fantasy with me, I felt like I'd have gone out and truly raped someone." I've never heard anyone remark anything like that.

Because it was illegal to produce it. In fun Japanese legal world, aka loop hole land, the assumption was if you target the production, then there is no one to sell to hence not needing it to be illegal or some nonsense, and if you did catch someone, then it's easy to throw them under the umbrella. But it was changed recently cause only an crazy person would think someone can't slip past umbrella laws like that.

Also someone said it was a picture from his office... yeah this dudes getting way more than the one year minimum.

edit- Says he got caught with DVD's, home made ones, AND is being charged with child prostitution. Yeah. Sorry Kenshin fans, your boy is done.

so he may have made some himself? jesus, lock the sick fuck up forever.

Not surprised about this coming out of an industry that is full of people so quick to draw sexualized kids. I really liked Kenshin, but fuck that.

No, he was caught for possession, not production. He bought/downloaded/whatever videos, nothing about him being actually producing any of it.

Be mindful when discussing this topic. And keep it to official news sources.

There are a lot of problematic elements in Japan's visual medium that leans with components of underage sexualisation, and it is an industry-wide problem that not just covers drawn illustrations, but even gravure; all of which are merit for discussion.

But at the same time, let's avoid going down the pool of assuming or being overly speculative about other prominent creators...

Even if they are authors of promiscuous content. Otherwise we can easily name dozens, if not hundreds of authors of all genders. No random guessing.

Stuff like the prior history of authors like Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro and any related concerns stemming from similar issues is fair though.

I don't like the idea of speculating who and who isn't a pedophile based on pure conjecture. But I do worry that this may be part of a systemic culture amongst Shonen Jump or even the wider manga artist community.

Goddamn it.

I've never dabbled in Kensin proper, but really enjoyed that one divergent ova. Can one say it's removed far enough from the author? No? Okay.

I hope to never find out anything milkshake duck about Araki

Guys... Someome said it already. Watsuki doesn't really draw loli fanservice. This is legit out of no where

I need to quote this for visibility.

To add onto this:

Professionals and artist circles alike, are all genuinely surprised, shocked, and disappointed at the news.

What we are not going to do, is make sweeping generalizations about professionals and a group of people. What we aren't going to do, is enable harassment and partake in speculation.

OP seems to be implying it's an IRL video of a girl, and not loli
"Naked video of a girl" sounds like a real video to me.

Watsuki didn't seem like this kind of person. This is really strange...
