My personal vote is Into The Breach, but that's mostly because I like turn-based strategy a lot more than platforming.

I'll likely go through Celeste and Hollow Knight again, but in my mind it's liking picking between Mario and Zelda. I happen to be picking Zelda.

Last year, my indie of the year, Gorogoa, dropped in December so I'll keep an open mind. Monster Boy and Dragon Marked For Death look great.

The Messenger and Dead Cells are really good too. Into The Breach looks so much like my jam, I'm mad I filled my plate and spent my all my money without any idea what it was.

celeste is the one indie darling that disappointed me. i'm super bummed that i didn't enjoy it as much as i thought i would. i still played the game for 20 hours, finished it, unlocked or finished some of the b-sides even, but i was left not impressed, or feeling like i played a special or important game.

Personal opinion is that it's the best game I've played this year, full stop.

There's some games later in the year that I really love the look of but Celeste was just the perfect game to me.

I played through and loved Celeste, but it didn't leave any lasting impression on me other than the music being amazing.

I'm currently enjoying my time with The Messenger more than Celeste, and of course a nod has to be given to Into The Breach and Dead Cells, as well.

It'll be interesting to see how those four rank on my list, come the end of the year.

I did not really enjoy celeste at all.

Too low res pixels - looks quite bad
Overstays its welcome - became repetative
I hated the story and dialogue
Trial and error gameplay

Great music and tight controls though

Hollow Knight is just a better gams in every way imo

I feel like I really missed something about Celeste and Hollow Knight. They're both pretty good but there are tons of masocre platformers and Metroidvanias, and never understood why these ones were picked to stand out. In Hollow Knight's case, I easily prefer Axiom Verge, Iconoclasts or Guacamelee.

Into the Breach is brilliant though, and I like what I played of Dead Cells.

Yes, by a wide margin. Celeste was a pretty special experience to play. Definitely my favorite 2D platformer (that isn't a Metroidvania).

Celeste will very likely end as one of my favourite games of this generation.

For me it is. I've played a few other indies that's I've really enjoyed this year like Yoku's Island Express, Dead Cells and Into the Breach. The last two are games I'm still playing and I might have a change of thought for best indie (ITB will be getting lots of time for sure).

But Celeste is really some of the closest to perfect games I've played. The level design is fantastic, controls are tight, has an incredible soundtrack and has a really heartfelt story for a platformer. Right now it's my GOTY.

Oh and I have been playing Hollow Knight too. It's a gorgeous game with some neat ways to traverse around the maps, but I think I still like Celeste more. And I see Hollow Knight as a 2017 game.

Feels like a lot of people are sleeping on Iconoclasts. Think it will be like Hollow Knight when all of a sudden it will hit people how great it is after months of not really seeing it mentioned.
Game's been on most consoles so far and people should really give it a play.
I'd post some of its awesome animations buuuut finding them is difficult =_=

the last two points made me not enjoy the game as much as i wanted to.
i never vibed with the story. read so many people who loved it, so i was waiting for something special to happen but it never did.
and none of the level designs felt particularly amazing or fresh. it was just frustrating, but not in the good way of some other hard platformers.

One of the best games this year. Also being on Switch lets me play it on a train, its a huge addition so beyond a simple port.

Owlboy needs to at least be mentioned. Maybe not better, but it's in the pantheon of great 2D indie platformers/action games that's admittedly getting pretty crowded.

To me yes. I like Hollow Knight and Dead Cells etc, but they are mostly for their great gameplay only. But Celeste has great gameplay PLUS strong characters, environment, music and story that grabbed my heart.

Personally found Celeste better than hollow knight. And metroidvania is my favorite genre of 2d games just above platformers. To be fair I haven't beaten hollow knight, only played for 10-15 hours. It's good but I feel like I'm losing steam to continue playing. That never happened with Celeste, I was completely engaged the whole time and even did a lot of the very difficult post game content

I think this is a good year for indie games when we got so many top contenders going around.

It's my GotY. Nothing even came close until I got hooked on Into the Breach this week via the Switch release. I have Dead Cells waiting on my PC, but I might double dip and pick up the switch version given my track record with these gems .

People were yelling about Hollow Knight from the moment it released though. It got reviewed by most major sites and was getting GOTY buzz from places like PC Gamer.
