Why dont you just tell us what you really think, "I hear you, dont worry, I hear you", you sound like a shitty politician. Why not just make a giant poll in Announcements and then use that as a litmus for the community's feelings, which I gaurantee are not good. Cannot but suspect there is some ulterior motive for all this

I am telling you what I really think: I know that the push came from a good place, but obviously doesn't resonate with the rest of the community (and which means a poll is unnecessary)

This sounds a lot like politicians consulting corporations and making changes based on that and ignoring the general populace. Did not a single staff member think about what others would think?

Also, is this basically the Unofficial official feedback thread now?

We do care about what "others" would think. I agree that this should have been handled differently and will push for stronger community involvement in the future; apologies to all of you who feel overlooked

Goddamn it

Doesn't look it's going to be reversed anytime soon. Which is disappointing.

Chill, we are talking about a reversal right now

I won't go into more detail as this thread is not about the failed feedback thread. I'll say this: it's not that we didn't like the feedback from the thread, but that certain individuals took the thread as an opportunity to lash out against the staff in front of an audience which culminated in a framing of an event that gave the impression that we shutdown a minority community which is nonsense. Our communication in that thread could have been much better, and I apologize for that. That being said: the bits and pieces of valuable feedback are being looked at and incorporated into 2.0.

You've got admin and moderation rights! If individuals are being a pain in the ass ban them, don't dump the entire thread.

The thread wasn't even open while Europe was awake, you have an entire continent of feedback that you never got. You've had no chance to investigate feedback and drill into it to understand it correctly, or if other people agree with it. You've not said which bits of feedback you feel are valuable and made them public so people know what is and isn't being worked on.

This is directly relevant to the current outcry, because your actions on the redesign and the feedback thread are precisely why people don't trust you with this. Era has a long track record of saying it didn't communicate very well, will do better, and then doing even worse. I'm baffled by why you say you're surprised people don't trust you to revert, when the explanation of why is very, very clear.

You have no transparent feedback mechanism. You have no public discussion of the direction or design goals of the site.

As for the "redesign disaster": this was always meant as a temporary solution until 2.0 and we always kept the legacy themes available to everybody. To say that we did ignore feedback is wrong as there have been new fixed added since the initial launch version.

That's exactly a great example. The fixes added didn't join in with the feedback. I don't even care about the purple or use dark themes, but the overwhelmingly main piece of feedback from those threads was that the purple was wrong. The fixes ignored the number one piece of feedback. Didn't even address it. Radio silence ever since.

The 1.5 themes can be temporary all you like, but they clearly failed at their goals. And yet they are still the defaults for the site instead of the legacy ones. That is not a large code change and should have been switched around ages ago. But that feedback has been ignored.

Just caught up and I think I understand the frustration with this change.

We never had the intention to seperate politics from entertainment - I think considering how we already moderate threads that are a fusion of both entertainment and politics should be evidence enough of that. A thread about LeBron James calling Clownstick Von Fuckface a bum would have both a place in the Entertainment and the Etcetera section, probably even more so in the Entertainment forum. I understand the fear that we allow people to completely dissappear in their little Entertainment echo chamber, but this Entertainment forum would not be free of that.

I'm sure people will still believe what they want to believe at the end of the day, but I can promise you that when this idea first came up, we only had the best intentions in mind, which was to encourage more discussion and to give more visibility to community threads that different people might find interest in. We talked about this for a long time and decided to at least give it a shot for a some time, which we are doing now. If it's not working after a while, we're obviously not going to leave it as it is, which makes those dooming posts about this change even more confusing to me, but we clearly haven't explained that well enough so I somewhat get why that kind of thinking happens.
From what I understand though is that this change actually feels like a step back to many (especially those who are interested in news and shit) because now you not only have to navigate through three forums to get to the content you are interested in but also have to browse through forums filled with OTs. From that perspective, it absolutely makes sense that a lot of you are annoyed about this change.

So I guess my question is: would you guys be a bit more happy with this change if we had a thread ignore feature that works both on desktop or mobile? Or is this something that should be reversed because it harms your enjoyment of the forum?
I'll likely just stop looking in Entertainment/Off topic because it's just a mess of OT's. Off topic used to be a decent place to find a mixture of news, discourse, how to wipe your ass, new movie/tech etc threads.

OT's don't need to be surface more. Because they're so easy to search for. I suddenly decide I'm super hard for let's say photography now. I just search Photography Era. I'll find it.

I like it. Entertainment threads, OT or not, goes to entertainment forum.

It was silly having to go to another sub forum to read the latest anime news in the anime thread or read comic opinions in the comic thread.

People who complain of clutter... do you understand that ironically, OTs are a way to clutter things up. For example,if there wasn't a Comic OT, there would be 10-12 threads for the more popular comics.

The only problem with that is that it'd cause a dereliction of duty in other threads.

Dereliction of duty? It's an internet forum.

I'm not even that big on the change as I think it's a bit messy. Said as much in the announcement topic and then in here with my first post.

Some of you are acting like spoilt brats though, getting all aggressive and flying off the rails because something was tried you don't like. You can give feedback without all this hyperbole and going absolutely insane. It's embarrassing.

TIME FOR A NEW FORUM! CANCEL ERA CLEAR! TRUMPS REIGN WILL NOW BE EMBOLDENED! WE'RE PRACTICALLY NEOGAF NOW!

How about some of the overreacting gets toned down a notch?

The fact that there was no official feedback thread is baffling. Regardless of that it seems like this change has gone roughly how people predicted it would in the previous thread, not only is the site significantly more annoying to browse (especially on mobile) but now you have posters getting put on ignore in place of an ignore thread feature.

Not sure how new situation helps smaller OTs if they have to compete with bigger OTs and entertainment threads.
Right now a small OT gets bumped a few times a day.

This is only seen by the subscribers right now because people rarely click on "Hangouts."

Mixing the OTs means a small OT being bumped will now be on the front page of either ETC or Entertainment for possibly up to a couple of hours (if you pay attention that's how long things stay on page 1).

This increases the chances of someone noticing the OT who maybe didn't know it existed.

Note: as stated multiple times I think the new layout is terrible and think it would rarely bring anyone to an OT since they aren't that hard to find. But it would likely bring a few new posters to any given OT. I personally don't think that's worth the clutter or division though.

Pretty sure that's misdirection, cause there are more elegant ways to affect that change.

I really think some of you are weirdly paranoid, they want to increase traffic and were transparent about it. I think it's a backfire change but there is logic to the idea that it will make some OTs more visible, see my post above.

What has this got to do with advertisers? I don't think the Anime OT is bringing in more $$$.

I have reason to believe Akira Toriyama is funding this site. Just think about it.

Video game section? Dragon Quest thread at the top.

Hangouts? Dragon Ball Legends, Dragon Ball Fighterz, Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle, AND a Dragon Quest community all on the front page.

Entertainment? Dragon Ball Super. Anime OT. A question about Faulconer's Soundtrack.

Ectera? Japan Travel |OT| We have to go back. Why? Dragonball.

I refuse to believe this when we live in the same age as Reddit where people have to sort through all their favorite subreddits.
I use Reddit but I don't particularly like anything about it the layouts or features. I tolerate it because Era and most any other traditional message board is blocked at work. I don't really browse the main page of Reddit like I did here in EtcetEra; I stick to less than 10 subreddits that I have favorited (a few tabletop board and miniature game subreddits, a couple video game ones, and r/powermetal). If Era wasn't blocked at work, I'd spend almost no time on Reddit.

I don't know though. It was a long shift at work overnight and now that I'm home, normally I'd sit here and browse EtcetEra and see what people are talking about and what news there is out there. Not really feeling it at the moment, so I guess I'll just go to sleep.

What I find odd is just the expectation that shoving everything into one place would help more than it hinders. Like, you can't force people to care about something and become more active in threads. It's a great idea to try and raise awareness of community threads, but I can't help but think that a locked-stickied and constantly-updated-by-a-mod thread that was just an index of community threads would've been just as useful as all this.

If this change was implemented at the beginning of this forum, then maybe it might've worked but now the OTs are too large and personality dedicated to integrate with the rest of the Etcetera community. In my opinion, OT participation should require effort and understanding of the subcommunity to really have a coherent and evolving discussion. Opening the floodgates may boost viewership but how many new viewers will bother to catch up with the previous discussion and stick around?

And this is all coming from a (non) prominent OT creator. Shameless plug for the indie/alt music thread!

Thanks for the hot tip on putting OT thread starters on ignore to clear a lot of the chaff out. Sorry to them, nothing personal.

This feels like a Snapchat level of redesign where it does nothing but confuse and frustrate existing users. A change for the sake of change that hurts more than it helps.

I wonder how long and hard work it took to do this change and it's going to be reversed less than 12 hours of it being live lol

here
i know that resetting might take a bit, and it would be costly in some regards, but just give the community a chance to mull this over, to discuss the changes

we can be receptive to changes if given proper explanations im sure

we ain't all Bobberts here

We have consulted with community leaders (Prominent Members™) who we see as representatives of our sub-communities about this change and their feedback has been way more positive than in this thread or the announcement one which is why perceived this as a positive change for many. To say that we didn't ask for any input is flat out wrong, but this thread makes it clear that the community wants to be consulted more when it comes to big changes like this one which will be reconsidered.
This sounds like how Poochie was made.

Awww don't change it back yet, seeing the fit this forum has had has been more entertaining than the whole Entertainment section.

Maybe have it for a week or two, then run a poll and if we still hate it, then roll it back?

Or, you could go straight for the GOAT forum layout
