It's an unfinished, rushed out game. The Special Edition didn't fix any of DMC4's failings.

Story mode is not good, only thing worth playing in DMC4 is Bloody Palace. To be honest I'm somewhat disappointed that structure and progression seems to be exactly the same in DMCV.

I don't know about calling it best worst game. Combat aside it's not that bad.

Best combat system of all time trapped in a sub par campaign. As others have said Bloody Palace is the best part of the game. I have 100s of hours in DMC4.

DMC4 is my favourite game in the series. Sure, it shows signs of being a little rushed, but I love its controls and moveset. It's a game that I would have replayed multiple times anyway, so I didn't mind that a potentially alternate Dante mode was actually integrated into the main campaign.

Yeah pretty much this. It's a thing of beauty to play and let's face it when was the last time you gave a fuck about the story in an action game?

I still like it more than DMC3, but not as much as DMC1.

If they'd actually finished it instead of rushing it out, it would have been the best DMC game.

This is actually a relieving thread - I picked up DMC4-SE during a sale as I've never played the franchise properly and was really struggling to see what the appeal was. Would I be better off with the HD collection?

It was rushed, and the story is underwelming.
But 4's combat mechanics are at the peak of the DMC series, and arguably the entire character action genre.

It's a game I've ended up buying 4 times already.... because it's just that fun.
Wasted many hours in bloody palace.

The appeal is the combat system and the depth of it as you learn of the multiple was you can extend combos and cancel attacks (jump canceling, style canceling, etc). Pretty much everything else is mediocre but the combat system is so good (if you are willing to spend time and energy learning it's intricacies) everything else gets a pass. Which is why most people rush the story then play bloody palace for 100 hours. For me it doesn't save the whole package which is why I think Ninja Gaiden Black is still the absolute top dog in the action genre and DmC3 is still better too.

Good to know - thanks. I'm not sure I'd be in for that level of combat intricacy, but maybe I'll push through the story and find out if the Bloody Palace can change my mind.

Try DMC3, although keep in mind it's a PS2 game and has that mid 2000s jank.

Tbh these games are so old now it's hard to maybe recommend to newcomers. But for modern DMC DMC3 is where it's at.

When you get comfortable there's a bunch of great tutorials on youtube under the banner 'advanced dmc3 tutorials'. A lot of it though is stuff that's helpful at all levels I feel and gives you a sense for the versatility of the combat engine.

But the appeal mostly if I had to explain it for me personally is that they're like really deep anime fight simulators. I've seen them described as being like single player fighting games, they've got a huge variety of different ways to play. On high levels it's like you can create all these amazing action scenes by your own hand and not cause of QTEs or something. Takes a lot of practice tho.

DMC1 is very different, more of an emphasis on exploiting weaknesses and exploring creepy castles.

Why DMC1 is garbage.

DMC2 is a bad game too. But it improves the camera or atleast gives wider areas so the camera isn't an issue. There is a bunch of variety in enemies/bosses, and Dante is just more fun to use due to how busted he is in that game. DMC1 was just a slog in comparison oh and after the first of the two levels or so there wasn't any backtracking. So level design was a step up too imo
You can't be serious. Compares DMC1 to DMC2 and say the second is better it's like to say shit is more tasty than chocolate. DMC2 is pure garbage in everything, I save just Dante redesign. But aside that, it's absolutely awful by every perspective possible.

Considering 4 is half a game its obviously not gonna be the best despite having the best character action combat system made. People love to often say 'what were they even thinking?' without realising the game is literally unfinished and the devs vision was never met.

Yeah I thought pretty much the same after finishing it again (on ps4 now)

Camera is one of the worst in any 3d action game
Level design is just awful
Story is quite bad
Resuse of assets is laughable (5 bosses resused 3-4 times each)

... but

It has a great deep combat system that just feels good

I hate playing the campaign, but I think I've sunk well over 500 hours into Bloody Palace as Nero alone. So yeah, it's probably one of the best games ever in one of the worst campaign packages out there. Like, it's not offensively bad like DMC2, but without a good platform for pure combat included, I'd be hard pressed to consider it far above a 5/10 game. With BP included and having everything unlocked? Easy 9/10 at the very least.

It's half a game with bad level design and repetition. It's not the worst DMC game, DMC1 is. But It's weaker than DMC3 and DmC.
Why DMC1 is garbage.

If you aren't interested in being a hardcore Bloody Palace combo fiend, Bayonetta and - yes - DmC are more accessible entry points into this genre tbh

It has all kind of issues but the combat is world class, for this reason alone I'll forever place it above DmC
