Please correct me if my calculations are incorrect
If you bought a launch PS4 and have paid for PS plus primarily to play online for the duration of the PS4s lifetime, and you renew for another year in November, then you would have paid $719.93 so far
This is based on $399 plus $49.99 in Nov 13, followed by $49.99 in November 2014, 2015 and 2016, and then $59.99 to renew for November 2017 and 2018
So playing a launch PS4 online is already over 100 dollars more expensive than playing a launch PS3 online, and should you use your PS4 online for another 2 years that will push it to over 200 dollars more than a launch PS3
That comes to $319.94 spent on PS Plus over 5 years, which could also net you 5 AAA games at $60 a pop and still leave you with enough change for some DLC
Now obviously not everyone spent $399 on their PS4, and not everyone pays full price for Plus, so the actual figure per person will clearly differ depending on what kind of deals you've been able to get, but I think it's interesting to see how these costs soon climb up.
The "free" games are a nice incentive but when you add up the cost of Plus for half a decade it soon eclipses what you could have got those same games for during various PSN sales, and that's assuming the "free" games are always games you actually want to play
In March of this year Sony celebrated passing 34m PS Plus subscribers (34.2m to be exact) so again, a rough calculation, 34,200,000 x $59.99 = $2.051658 billion, a year. A year
So while servers cost money to maintain, and while a service is still being provided, along with 'free' games, it's obvious that the vast majority of the money you hand over for Plus is pure mark up, because the market has shown it's happy to pay this. You could also argue the service isn't that great, with servers for Demon's Souls and even a recent game like Gravity Rush 2 being shut down, and no crossplay being offered with other consoles for no good reason
Do you feel like PS Plus has been worth the cost over the last 5 years, and how do you feel about spending what will probably be close to $1000 for the PS5 and Plus over it's lifetime?
