Edmonton Police are reviewing a video posted to social media showing a heated and racist exchange between a man and a group of young Muslim women, the second such incident in as many weeks.

Late Wednesday night, Yasmin Ugas was with friends at the Clareview Superstore buying groceries when, she said, a man approached them.

"A man came up to us and started apologising to us for being slaves and wearing slave garments," she said.

"It was just really a way for him to start his schpeel about how Islam is trying to change the rules of Canada."

Ugas said this isn't the first time something like this has happened to her, but she said this incident stood out.

"I was shocked at the audacity he had to be able to speak so confidently about this," she said.

https://globalnews.ca/news/4420159/...ded-video-to-raise-awareness-of-islamophobia/

The sheer balls on this idiot. At the 1:08 part in the video, a good samaritan steps up to intervene. But shame on the store employees for doing nothing.

Nothing happened except a guy who kicked the islamophobe.
Props to that guy. Especially since he seems to be white and (maybe?) not a Muslim.

And yes sadly this will not get better in the next few years. The damage caused by media will take a long time to be fixed.

I've noticed that after Trump became the US President, the crazies here in Canada have become even more belligerent and feel enabled in their bigotry.

I have watched the video and read the article, and while the man in the wheelchair was an ass, I didn't hear anything racist (unless I missed it).

Somewhat on topic, I am glad that this kind of clothing is getting banned in more and more parts of Europe.

This encapsulation has no place in a free and open society where men and women are equals. By wearing this, you are walking around with a permanent wall in front of you that anonymizes you and prevents normal human interaction with the rest of society, completely excluding yourself.
It is also sexist, because men don't have to wear it, meaning it goes against the principle of gender equality.

Fuk off with this shit
I hate these clothes myself but if a woman decided she wanted to wear it it's her call
Open and free my ass too. Your shit is the same as the video (you are enslaved and oppressed blah blah)

And I don't mind a law if banning it for security purposes for example. But I dont force my view on others

You don't even have any clue why they want to wear it. They do it because they feel free and men dont treat them as sexual object or a pretty face etc and they chose who get to see them or not. It does empower them or so they claim

Yes men can be treated as sexual objects too but women suffer from this way way more.

Do you even see the nuns? They are covered (expect the face) and no one is allowed in the church to show a picture of Mary without the veil. They do this out of religious reasons not because they are slaved/oppressed

So yeah keep that open and free shit already. Unless security reasons involved I dont care what women chose to wear

Men don't have to wear habits either, but I don't see them getting banned.

People should ask why, of all religious clothing, only Muslims get the crackdown.

A free social society means "your right to swing your fist ends at the tip of my nose." I don't know why you feel entitled to see that woman's face. You don't have a right to her face.

You will find that most Islamophobic will either attack Muslim women (because their hijabs make them an easy target), or go after Hindus and Sikhs because they assume that all brown people are Muslims. It's why the comment that some make that Islamophobia isn't racism are being disingenuous.

Islamophobia is not racism. It's Islamophobia. Possibly xenophobia.
Racism is the incorrect belief that there are separate human races, some of which are superior to others.

You sound like a right wing nutter, you jump to the most extreme example and then make generalisations about these women. Everything you said is obvious, but if a women chooses to wear this due to her belief, like many do, you are being the oppressive one and discriminatory towards them, by removing her freedom to treat her body as she chooses. These women make up a fraction of Muslims, they're also many that don't have any male influence and are single.

Islamophobia is not racism. It's Islamophobia. Possibly xenophobia.
Racism is the incorrect belief that there are separate human races, some of which are superior to others.

Genocide has and currently is committed on the basis of being Muslim. Again, your invoking a right wing tactic to undermine the nature of hatred upon these people based purely on identity. Race is definitely tied into it.

Interesting you chose a thread about a man accosting random women on the street and reducing them to objects to express your concern about women dehumanizing themselves by their choice of clothing.

Banning niqabs does nothing to address the patriarchal power structures underlying their use. All it accomplishes is victimizing the women who choose or were forced into wearing this particular symbol.

Yup. As if disagreeing with someone's religion is an acceptable reason to stop and harass strangers in public whose only crime is they're existing in the world.

Yeah, people like to hide behind the "I don't like religion" excuse, but they only seem to target specific religions. You can tell their motives very clearly.

I don't like the niqab, and think it's a clear sign of internalized sexism, but banning it is a ridiculous infringement of personal rights. Also, harassing people who wear it should be considered a hate crime.

Wow. Apologizing and downplaying vile racism and then bringing in irrelevant alt right / neo nazi talking points. Congrats.

This is why racism against Muslims persists. Because of posters like this.

I like how racists don't care when Muslim women are attacked and have hate crimes committed against them, but somehow claim to care about them and what clothing they wear.

I don't jump to anything, there is a person wearing one of these in the video ~30 seconds in, and it's also mentioned in the article.

I see.
You don't seem to want to talk about how they were harassed and instead seem to be bothered exactly the same way as the idiot in the video. It really showcases the point being made.

My issue is with you making assumptions about her and every other one of these women motivations, they're already one of the most discriminated groups in the western world, its unfortunate that your treating them as one homogeneous group that think and behave alike.

If they want to go about thier day, wearing that, without harming anyone, there shouldn't be a problem. I know it looks strange, but we should move away from judging them and thier character because it makes us feel strange.

I see.

Perhaps I wasn't clear, your spiel about anonymity , human interaction, limiting possible one on one interaction, its a predictable concern we hear all the time (just missing the balaclava in a bank comparison), of course those are elements we use in our moment to moment interaction, but that doesn't mean it's the only way to conduct ourselves. This is so obvious that it's hard not to see what your trying to do here. Why bring this up instead of discussing the abuse these women face?

Yes, they were harrased by the man who did so on purpose, he adressed them without being asked and called their clothes "slave garments", which was obviously offensive to the women.

"A man came up to us and started apologizing to us for being slaves and wearing slave garments," she said.

Ugas is Muslim and wears a hijab; another friend who wears a niqab was also present for the encounter.

"He has clearly a lot of ignorant ideas about why we're wearing our hijab and he's blaming our husbands on the fact that we're being forced to wear this," Ugas said.

"It was just really a way for him to start his schpeel about how Islam is trying to change the rules of Canada."
I was gonna make a joke about whether this guy was a ResetERA user, but I guess I don't have to now.

What does this have to do with the thread? A single line that's actually dismissive of their concerns and then you go on about something that has absolutely nothing to do with the topic.

How does that make it okay to ignorantly use the label of Muslim when referring to anyone who happens to be from the Middle East? I see it all the time and it doesn't look any less stupid. Imagine if you traveled to that part of the world and everyone there referred to you as Christian just because you're from Europe or North America.

It's not the first time Occam has done this. There was this thread where a user was struggling with severe depression, and was seeking spiritual guidance and help to write a letter to the pope.

Then of course, edgy atheist Occam came into the thread, and decided to write a stupid hot take that did not help the OP at all...

Yeah, I've noticed the username before. It's wild to me. I know someone from high school who got hooked on meth by her dad (who was cooking it). She was terrible. They bottomed out hard, and got arrested. Found religion in prison, and now she's happily married with a kid (and raising her kid sister), and her dad voluntarily surrendered himself for past crimes (and is serving his sentence out). They're model citizens now, and that's entirely due to religion.

Do I share their beliefs? No. Do I recognize the power of their beliefs? Damn right

To be fair, Occam will deliberately derail any thread relating to any religion and has done so countless times in the past. He's been remarkably consistent in loudly letting everyone know that no religion is acceptable to him.
