It's kind of a "better late than never" but I'm thirsty for one. Give me XBLA games I need to peruse, modern stuff to look out for, and anything inbetween (services?).

Stuff I'm looking into...

-Killer Instinct
-Halo: The Master Chief Collection
-Rare Replay
-Cuphead

Something along those lines of action, platforming, retro flashbacks are up my alley. I know there's not a lot of fighting game selection as far as exclusives go and I have both a PS4 for modern fighters and a Switch for a fair amount of retro fighters. Oh, and a good list of BC games from past systems, since I've missed out on this brand, and I had a 360 for about a month or two just to play Vesperia before I didn't do what to do with it, and gave it to my older brother.

Thanks so much in advance.

Sunset Overdrive, in my opinion, is the must have game for the platform.

Take advantage of the XGP promo that ends today. Enjoy that for a couple of months and then decide if you want to re-up. If you enjoy EA games then EA Access is a great way to experience those games. I would wait for the holiday sales to pickup anything that is not on XGP.

Once you've finished MCC you should check out Halo 5. It's not as good as the first three but it's better than it gets credit for (and it looks ace!).

Check out Shadow Complex. Just do it.

KI Definitive Edition is a must-buy. You can probably find it physical for cheap. It's a really fun, unique fighter.

Forza is great if you're into racing games. Halo and Gears for shooters.

Grab Phantom Dust (I think it's still free)

Rare Replay is excellent and probably also quite cheap. Cuphead's art style is amazing but it's also hard as all get out so if you're easily frustrated wait for a sale.

Also ReCore is a lot of fun, try to snag it for cheap if you can.

EA Access is awesome to try too. Lots of games in the vault worth playing, both current-gen and back compat.

And before it comes out, you'll be able to use EA Access for a limited free trial of Battlefield V.

I don't have Game Pass, but my understanding is that all the first-party games are on there so you should be able to play Halo, Gears, Killer Instinct, and more on that service if I'm not mistaken. The only reason I don't have Game Pass is because I bought all those games already and between my 3 consoles I've got a big backlog as it is.

That said, some of my favorite things on the Xbox One are:

Killer Instinct - best fighting game of the generation in my humble opinion.
Gears of War 4 - Great campaign and Horde is a lot of fun.
Halo - Pretty much any of the Halo games will deliver for you.
PUBG - It still needs a lot of work but there's nothing else like it.
Fortnite - Runs best on my X and I can use the same account on my Switch when I want to play portable.
Bayonetta - Stellar action game and the definitive version of the original thanks to performance upgrades from the hardware.
Split/Second - Another awesome 360 game that runs even better on the Xbox One.
Fallout 4 - Play with way more mods than the PS4 version. I don't play stuff on PC so this was a get for me.
Daytona USA - Arcade perfect Daytona, which is something we didn't have for years and years.
Hydro Thunder - This is a pretty good remake of the original with added tracks and boats.
Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown - Another backward compatible game from the 360 era but its the last we've seen of the VF series.
Castle Crashers - There's the Remastered version of the game available but I had the original and still love it.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - I just like having this loaded and ready to play on any console I can get it for.

That's not everything on my Xbox but its some of my favorite and most-played stuff. There are a lot of other people who can provide great lists of exclusives, but I wanted to provide a personal list regardless of exclusivity.

All the Gears games are on Gamepass if you're into those.

Sunset Overdrive and Ori are very good.

Oh, and a good list of BC games from past systems, since I've missed out on this brand, and I had a 360 for about a month or two just to play Vesperia before I didn't do what to do with it, and gave it to my older brother.

As many others have previously stated, getting Xbox Game Pass is an absolute must. Luckily, there are already many titles from the original Xbox and Xbox 360 that are included in Game Pass. I've outlined some of the following backward compatible games to try out:

  • Banjo Kazooie (Xbox 360)
  • Banjo Tooie (Xbox 360)
These two games are included in Rare Replay, which you were already looking into. If you haven't played either of these games before, I think they are the pinnacle of N64 platforming. They play even better on Xbox One with updated resolution and better controls.
  • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Xbox 360)
  • Fable Anniversary (Xbox 360)
  • Mass Effect (Xbox 360)
  • Ninja Gaiden Black (Xbox)
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Xbox)
These are kinda RPG heavy suggestions, but they are critically important games if you've never played any of them. I know there's a high chance you already experienced Oblivion, but the Xbox One X enhancements make this a totally different experience. Fable Anniversary is probably the best out of the trilogy. Luckily all three games are available on Game Pass, but if the first game doesn't do it for you then you won't enjoy the following two entries (hell, you might not enjoy them if you enjoyed the first one anyways). Mass Effect was only available on 360 I believe, so check it out if you haven't. Ninja Gaiden Black might be right up your alley, it's one of the hardest games I've ever played but the reward you get from beating it is astonishing. Knights of the Old Republic is old Bioware at its peak. The combat system is definitely old school, but the plot and writing is still among the best they've ever achieved.

Here are other games on Game Pass (that are exclusive to Xbox) that are worth checking out:

  • D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die (Xbox One, Graphical Adventure)
  • Gears of War: Ultimate Edition (Xbox One, Third Person Shooter)
  • Gears of War 2 (Xbox 360, Third Person Shooter)
  • Gears of War 3 (Xbox 360, Third Person Shooter)
  • Gears of War 4 (Xbox One, Third Person Shooter)
  • Halo: The Master Chief Collection (Xbox One, First Person Shooter) [Launches September 1]
  • Halo 5: Guardians (Xbox One, First Person Shooter)
  • Halo Wars: Definitive Edition (Xbox One, Strategy)
  • Halo Wars 2 (Xbox One, Strategy)
  • Quantum Break (Xbox One, Third Person Shooter) [Launches September 1]
  • ReCore (Xbox One, Action-Adventure/Platforming)
  • Ryse: Son of Rome (Xbox One, Third Person Action)
  • Sea of Thieves (Xbox One, Online Action Adventure)
  • State of Decay 2 (Xbox One, Open World Zombie Survival)
