Looking at the DLC list for God Wars: Complete Edition makes me think the name isn't exactly appropriate :D

So EU gets a sale of 3 major games(Arms, Mario Kart 8, Splatoon 2) and NA gets the regular "almost bringing these overpriced games on par with other consoles prices" sale. Great!

Tempted to impulse-buy Hyakki Castle. The monster designs are amazing, and even if it just ends up being a janky Grimrock I'll probably have fun with it.

Same. I'm probably gonna bite.

It was a surprisingly spendy day today, with Argus, The Messenger, Mini Metro, and now Hyakki Castle. I'll probably get Freedom Planet sometime but what I've seen of the story is...unbearable. But I hear there's a way to skip all that and get to the gameplay, thankfully.

Literally only played it a few minutes, but am I the only one put off by modern anochronsitic dialog in games, or just dialog that sounds a bit like a petulant teen speaking? The Messenger used the word "boring" very quickly. Repeat, a ninja, used the word....."boring".

Anachronistic dialogue is a funny complaint in a game about time travel :D

Yeah this bugs me. I'm playing Donut County right now and while there's some really funny writing, everyone speaks exactly the same way and it's full of text sp33k.

What really gets me though is when games go for an old or middle English vibe but mixes archaic and very modern words or gets their thys, thees, thines, and thous mixed up. Learn the difference between noun cases, jeez. :P

Saw a couple of pages ago that Mini Metro just got released, out of nowhere, on the eShop. Really excited about it and ready to double-dip, but uh.. could you please comment on how it plays on the Switch? Good controls or is it awkward at all? Thanks in advance! :)

Will do. Probably won't have time to try it until tonight or tomorrow morning though.

Oh, I didn't know that much about it....

I'm referring more to the general tone of dialog in "The Messenger", as much as anything. There's a lot of fourth wall breaking, contemporary styled text that feels more like a you get video game developer talking, than say a ninja or a wizard, and that always removes me from game play and mood pretty quickly. It wasn't just that scene by the way, as I got through the first two levels, and it's rife with snark and peculiar conversations that are trying very hard for comedy, within a fantasy action adventure ninja platformer.

I'm finding the level design fair, and the music a bit over laden with harmony layers too.

I just wish modern indie design would rely more on its own principles, rather than merge a prior game feel, with modern dialog sensibilities. That put me off of Cosmic Star Heroine a few minutes in, and Celeste as well. I end up hearing more of a person's mindset in that particular generation they're a part of, versus a fictionalized character that feels other worldly or foreign, and well....inreresting, rather than a socially aware, snark master.

Yeah this bugs me. I'm playing Donut County right now and while there's some really funny writing, everyone speaks exactly the same way and it's full of text sp33k.

I can't imagine the process of dialog vetting with developers. It seems more like an afterthought, and sense of pride in their own voice, than their characters, doesn't it?

I will add, as much as I'm out off by "The Messenger" 's dialog, I really felt Hollow Knight was fantastic regarding fitting tone within their world and their character' s "voices". I just wish the level design didn't drag so much....

I think it was listed in the pre-order section for a few weeks. I heard there was a discount, but I'm not seeing one.... Maybe that was for the EU.

Just wanted to drop in a say Freedom Planet plays pretty good on the Switch y'all. Beat the first level with both Lilac and Carol and while Carol's moveset still gets some getting used to, she controls far better on Joycons than she did on a Mac keyboard that's for sure. Lilac still controls pretty good and now landing uppercuts and divekicks are way easier with Switch Joycons!

Also played a Daily Challenge in Battle Chef Brigade as Ziggy. That dude has some fun combos and the variety of ghost friends he has are a lot of fun to use. I like how all of Ziggy's dishes' names are Halloween themed too. Made me happy to see the deluxe version include that sick animated opening Trinket Studios showed off before.

Just tried the demo for Yoku's Island Express. I liked it. The game is cute and charming, and although I'm not really into pinball games, it felt less chaotic here. The pinball sections were small, quick fun, while the bumper mechanic to traverse the world seemed interesting. I obviously missed the sale for it (which I guess is fine since I'm still playing Hollow Knight), but I think I'll pick it up next time it's on sale.

Doom 33% off. Tempting. Is this one of the "additional download" games? I would usually buy a "biggie" physically.

Doom is a great game. I've been playing it for most of August even though I bought it physically at launch. It's tough and the gameplay is predictable, walk to new area, kill monsters, move on to next area. But they've put lots of story & lore in there (like Metroid Prime). The graphics are really nice and it's been patched to be a lot better performing than launch.

Online is dead though. I went into a lobby a couple of days ago and waited for about 5 minutes and nobody joined. In fact I'm yet to play an online match.

What mode are you playing? TDM matches fill for me without issue.

I'm gonna double dip on La-Mulana 2 for sure. La-Mulana is my favorite game series period. I've had so much fun with 2 on PC.

I'm excited to see new audiences experience this series. Does that mean we can put my OT back in the main side next spring? I don't really know the protocol when a game gets a new wave of ports.

Oh good, another Metroidvania.
It's technically a Maze of Galious-like. Follows a very different tradition and plays nothing like Metroid or SotN. And it's been anticipated for over four years, so I think the excitement is warranted! The sense of adventure, challenge, and discovery is like nothing else in the medium, in my opinion.

I'm gonna get Haunted Dungeons as soon as I get around to picking up an eshop card. I'm with you guys, I don't expect it to be great but it's so weird that I can't resist it. It'll probably have a great icon anyway :P

Controls work quite well. Controller took a couple minutes to get used to, but I prefer the touch controls, which are a bit more intuitive.

I told myself I'd be better this month but these last two weeks have resulted in far too much impulse buying: Iconoclasts, S&S, Dead Cells, Bomb Chicken, and now The Messenger

Thanks for the feedback. On the shopping list :)

I can also second this.
While the touch controls are super easy especially if you already played the mobile version i must say the controls work fine and i guess it takes like 10min until your brain remembers it all. The thing that takes more time to remember is how you can delete only certain parts of a subway track.

I prefer playing on handheld but this game is one i can also play on tv.
One control i like a lot is that the L/R bumpers switch between the play/pause/forward time options and that is actually easier/faster than having to touch the clock.

Liked Oxenfree. Was not convinced by the "interrupt" dialogue system and some of the voice acting didn't seem to match the on screen character. Great atmosphere though, and I happily listen to the track Atmos outside of gaming purposes.

Eventually I just stopped responding to see what would happen. It was more amusing than the obvious and uninteresting dialog options.

Oxenfree was pretty meh, I liked the characters and the soundtrack was alright I guess. As far as walking simulators go this has to be one of those that I least enjoyed.
