How do you like your puddles?

  • The entire game should take place inside a huge puddle

  • As big as Insomniac's artists want them to be

  • As deep as my knowledge of game development

  • I prefer oceans tbh

So you are telling me that it's usally better to believe what the developers say? Don't you think that's a bit naive, especially considering that there have actually be downright deceiving attemps to make certain AAA games look prettier than they actually were before release in the past, e.g. all the shit that Ubisoft pulled off?
Is it better to believe people who just look at one screenshot and not the numerous recent videos?

Actually looking forward to somebody doing a side-by-side comparision of this section to see what visual changes were made and what downgrades may or may not have taken place. I find stuff like Pre-release vs Retail comparisions absolutely fascinating! The bigger cases like Rainbow Six Seige and Watchdogs in particular were amazing to look at and compare.

It looks downgraded to me, and if fans get so upset over such talk now, imagine how they'll react if the game doesn't get straight 9's and 10's across the board.

It's not. There are three factors at play here.

1. It's an extremely low quality youtube grab for the pictures, which completely removes any detail you might see in the image.

2. There are a few asset changes, the puddles got smaller and spider-man's suit now looks like cloth instead of plastic

3. The time of day changed, which makes the lighting look different (most gamers assume different = bad).

From the changes in lighting when comparing the custscenes no. It looks like what happens to all games at some point, lighting/color correcting/texture changes, and sometimes DOF changes as well.

Suit went from having shiny vaseline look to a more natural cloth/fabric look which actually shows of more definition of the model when making it look more like fabric, more detail in the texture can be seen.

Cheers.

That's actually the most embarrassing thing about this thread. You have two sides: Some people who believe there is a downgrade and others who lose their shit because they think there is none.

Yet, many of those "other's" can't seem to just say "no, I don't think so" and just give arguments why they think so. Instead you hear stuff like "gamers are the worst","how can gamers be so stupid","those stupid entitled gamers","I hate gamers", displaying ridiculously generalizing insults and just poor debating culture.
It's because there's nothing to debate. You're right that there's two sides, you just got them wrong. There's the side trying to see downgrades in a bunch of compressed footage of a game and freaking the fuck out over anything that changed in the game over the course of a year in development for no good reason. Then you have the other side who are pointing out how completely stupid and overreactive it is to do that.

So yeah, saying stuff like "gamers are the worst" is happening because a bunch of them are making a big deal over nothing and it's embarrassing. At least it'll be forgotten in a few hours.

Here's the deal: Spider-Man's hype has been very clean and unadulterated so far. There has been no opening for fanboys. No concerns about a dramatic change like with God of War, no concerns about an overdone genre like with Days Gone, no "Ubisoft open world" concerns like with Horizon, no concerns about Polyphony fucking things up like with Gran Turismo Sport, no usual Sony third person action game shenanigans like with, well, anything else that they make, nothing. Spider-Man so far has given no opening to people who are looking for some way to undermine it. Which means this one fucking puddle, which in a sane world would literally not matter has become what they have seized on. And that's why it has become such a big deal- because all "GAMERS CAN UNITE" over a graphical downgrade. It's ammunition for concern trolls and in the console war, plain and simple.

Yeah ok prefer the suit. It gives it a more natural, realistic look. However the shadows, missing AO and reflections are unfortunate. Fortunately however they're there for other scenes and it seems like it was all just changed for this particular scene.

Instead of listening to the people making it you'd rather listen to someone wholly uninvolved in the project with no knowledge about the game's development?

In al seriousness now. To me 20017 looks better. I don't know if the game received a downgrade or not. I don't have any reason to not trust the devs, but if the game had been downgraded would they really say it? I don't know.

Anyway, if what they're saying is true, I feel bad for them.

20.8k and they already fucked up the moment they said there is no downgrade.

What did they fuck up? When reviews hit and the game hits next week this shit isn't even going to matter. You'll have some people still crying about it while others are having the time of their lives playing the game.

I can promise you a lot of these people on reddit aren't even getting the game. Just jumping on a bandwagon. After this game comes out. They'll be outraged by COD, Then RDR2. Then Fallout.

Ok ignore list for you.

Lmao, the funniest thing is, you thought you could try and catch me out... Like I didn't know what was directly and indirectly lit in that scene. And then when you don't have any options left, you choose the pic that doesn't show the shadows (the real one is there in the OP) and claim you can't see them... well yeah, you can't see them because you chose the wrong picture to hide the fact you lost the argument. LOL what the fuck hahaha.
you could've at least told me which picture we were arguing about lol

Yes, you should trust the devs and not some twat on reddit, especially when we have a guy from Insomniac that posts on this forum.

That puddle so big we might as well consider it a water level.

There a lot of things we can't handle, the f word being used often and puddles are two of them.

I'm hyped for the game but it has clearly been downgraded from the original reveal clips - which always looked very ambitious on current hardware.

The game still looks good.
Actually we've seen proof of tons of upgrades. The game was improved visually from the initial reveal. Better lighting, better hair and facial details, reflections in windows, more details on the street for storefronts and other street elements, and so on

When devs share proof and logical explainations to support their comments, then yes you should believe devs over people who have no idea what they're talking about

Pretty much. The console warriors/concern trolls tried with the air hang movement physics and failed miserably. They'll fail miserably with this as well. The game just looks fucking beautiful in motion and the final product easily reflects that.

Gamers can be so ridiculous sometimes. The game still looks great. Enjoy the game if you're excited for it or play something else if you're not.

Pretty much everything.

This tops is going in circles someone will post in here and say "clearly" then someone has to explain again for the 400th time in this isnt the case.

I dismiss the possibility of a downgrade when loads of evidence is presented that refutes it, especially from the people that made the game. No 'lmao' needed.
The evidence Insomniac provided are from different parts of the game, it's hard to compare. So I'm not buying either side here. I don't even think a downgrade is that big of a deal. I mean, hey, whatever needs to be done to get the game running! If there is not downgrade, great. But the current state of that specific scene is not an improvement.
With two different states of the same scene being shown with striking differences, people will question. And anyone can notice that puddles are not the only change in that screenshot.

OP needs to be edited with the new puddle stuff so people quit their stupid drive by "looks downgraded to me" posts based off of shitty compressed footage.
