It's a shame this won't burn Musk to the ground or have any positive impact on his awful behaviour, but I hope the diver gets something good out of it.

Sadly though, they kinda are. Him getting sued and losing the suit will hurt his ego, but in terms of the law and common decency, there's no way to really punish them on any sort of equivalent level that would be meaningful. The deterrence of randomly calling a person a pedophile in public because you don't like them is supposed to be that it can hurt your pocket if you get sued. So you think twice about doing that even if you're a bad person who has no decency. But for a billionaire it's nothing. He can say whatever he wants and pay whatever he subsequently has to, and it wouldn't deter him one bit. There has to be actual repercussions for this to actually matter to him - like the Tesla board forcing him to resign for example. But they wouldn't do it because they believe that without him the company, and their financial interests, will suffer.

It's true, the justice system lack teeth when dealing with people of such wealth. Paying fines should be calculated in proportion to your net worth. That way the punishment would sting equally for everybody. Payments from settlements would likely increase as well. If nothing else, this is Musk further tarnishing his and Teslas brand.

Randomly attacking someone in this manner with entirely baseless claims is rather distasteful, especially when doubling down *after* apologising.

Doing it to a hero who was heavily involved in the rescue efforts to save the football team is inexcusable.

As far as I can tell, the only reason he made these attacks was because of a bruised ego relating to not being able to get a portion of the glory for saving the kids (a rescue effort that one person died during), and the only reason his attack was an accusation of paedophilia was because Musk thinks there's no other reason someone would live in Thailand, a beautiful country with wonderful people, incredible landscapes, fantastic cuisine and a lot of interesting culture.

He's tried to exploit a tragedy for personal gain, he's disrespected the sacrifice made by one of the legitimate heroes, he's insulted an entire nation, and now despite previously admitting fault and retracting his statements, has decided to double down on them instead.

Musk is a scumbag and I hope he has to pay through the nose for this.

Good, Musk should learn he can't just use these accusations lightly.

Musk is such a sad, petty human being. Calling someone a pedophile because they said his stupid submarine wouldn't work is just ridiculous. Get your crap together

It sucks that billionaires are above the law. Maybe there should be a cap to personal property.
That would also reduce this idiotic urge to amass more and more money (for no other reason than to posess it), to the detriment of the rest of society. It's pretty insane that some private citizens own more than the GDP of some smaller countries.

And even then it wouldn't be really effective. Say the fine is always 5% of one's worth. In that case, a billionaire would still live way better with the remaining 95% than a poor person could, for whom 5% might mean the difference between being able to eat one night and not.

In my opinion it should be more like taxes: the higher the income, the higher the percentage of your worth you have to pay.

Sure, basically the proportionality couldn't be calculated at the same percentage, but rising exponentially with your net worth.

Since such a reform would have to be passed by politicians who are essentially all rich this would unfortunately never happen.

This is exactly why he did it, he was trying to be Tony Stark and this guy laughed at him.

Musk will just moneyhat his way out of this, they should force him to publicly apologise to the guys face.

He never apologised in the first place, he basically just said "I lost my temper but the guy had it coming because he insulted my toy submarine"

"Why doesn't he just sue me?" is one of those perfect "It's a banana, what could it cost? $10?" things. He's so out of touch he doesn't understand that legal action is a last resort for most normal people who don't have infinite money. And this guy is absolutely right to sue, of course, but I worry that Musk will have his lawyers tie the case up in legal red tape forever out of spite.

It's kind of weird that he brought up the "why go to Thailand" point against the diver when you could just as well point out how eager Musk was about going there.

Well deserved. I'm so sick of pompous rich people getting a pass for acting like sociopathic children. Too bad Musk is so rich that any payment would be a drop in the bucket for him, assuming he doesn't try the old "price them out by having my lawyers drag this as long as possible".

When he wins, part of the settlement should include that must make a public apology and a stickied tweet that he can't take down that admits being wrong about this guy. Stuff like that will drive him mad and will keep his mouth shut the next time he tries something stupid

What an idiot.

When I first heard this story, I'd never heard of Thailand as some holiday destination for banging hooker children. So I presumed there had to be some reason Musk would make such a bold claim. No one would make a declaration like that just because they were upset someone made fun of their imaginary submarine. I thought he must have been told something, someone must have some evidence or personal account of something happening, but no. Seemingly he just presumed that a white man in Thailand is there to fuck children, even if they happen to stumble upon a heroic act in the process.

This is a fairly trivial thing, and maybe not the mood of the room to ask, but how specific is liable/defaming law? Can you be sued for calling someone a pedophile, even if you had evidence they were in fact a hebephile or an ephebophile? And I am in no way suggesting the guy is. Just that even the people who go there to fuck teenage hookers aren't legally pedophiles anyway, despite being criminals.

Does US law allow to get compensated in anything other than money? Like let's say could he claim musk's twitter account?

How do you "reach out" to Musk via Twitter as the article states? Just tweet at him? As a famous person I would assume he gets tweets hundreds of times per day.

Seems like the right thing to do at this point. From a tech perspective I like what Musk is doing but it's been too high on his own shit for too long.
