Participants in Ontario's short-lived basic income experiment will sue the provincial government.

Lawyer Mike Perry filed the notice of action in a Lindsay, Ont. courthouse on Monday.

"No one likes to sue," Perry said in a press release. "Legal actions against the government are hard. But this is why the courts are there: for people to seek justice when governments stray and the political process isn't working."

The intent to file is for "anticipatory breach of contract, negligence, and misfeasance in public office."

Ontario's former Liberal government launched the program in April 2017. Participants were told they'd receive cheques every month for three years.

A spokesman for Premier Doug Ford said during the campaign that a Progressive Conservative government would let the program run its course.

"We look forward to seeing the results," party spokeswoman Melissa Lantsman told The Toronto Star.

The PCs changed their tune in July and announced they would "wind down" the program. Participants hadn't been notified before the press conference, and tell HuffPost Canada they still haven't received further information about when their income will stop.

Take me to court if old.

Good. Discontinuing before any conclusions can be drawn and without those supported being notified is despicable. Fuck this government.

Perhaps a propos of nothing, but I would like to note that Tesla has won their court case against the Ontario government recently.

So as far as I can tell, these are the court challenges the Ontario government is facing, has faced or will face in the near future:

1) Tesla (vehicle rebates)
2) Basic Income Recipients (basic income pilot)
3) Canadian Civil Liberties Association (sex-ed curriculum)
4) Toronto City Council ("Better Local Government Act")
5) Federal Government (carbon taxes)

Not to mention the lawsuit from Rob Ford's widow against Doug Ford himself.

He's been in power for TWO MONTHS.

Fuck Ford

Hope the courts abolish everything he tries to do, the piece of shit. Can't take four more years of this ineptitude.

I know this may seem like a really silly thing for an American to ask given our, uh, current situation - but how did this dude even get elected? Is Ontario actually really conservative outside of Toronto?

There are some hardcore Conservative ridings outside of Toronto, but generally, the pendulum always swings between Liberals and Conservatives because Ontarians are afraid of trying new things.

This was foreseen.

In a overzealous attempt to save a few bucks by cancelling a program a little early, the OPC's are gonna waste tax-payer money in court, probably lose, pay out more money, and then the ombudsman is gonna slam them for basically wasting the money from the program in the first place because not allowing it to complete means the data is useless.

The party that he beat was in complete disarray and had numerous spending and legal scandals, and the leader refused to step down.

Also: https://nationalpost.com/news/polit...p-vote-results-delayed-by-scrutineering-issue

Ford managed to garnet fewer votes, carry fewer ridings, was behind on the first ballot, but because of a bizarre weighted value system, he managed to win his party's nomination.

If buck-a-beer turns into a lawsuit it will be golden.

I truly hope some good can come from this. I've been appalled at Ford's government so far. Snitch line for teachers, rolling back environmental protections and wage increases, and cancelling the UBI trial that seemed to be going quite well, and was an important study that Canada needs not just with mass automation on the horizon (Reports estimate over 40% of Canadian jobs could be lost to automation within the next two decades) but because it seems like it's a better social security program than disability and welfare while providing advantages to every citizen.

So much damage and regression in so little time, this has been a sad time for Ontario, and it's only just beginning.

Because of first past the post.

Majority of people voted left, but because of vote splitting the right wing dipshit gets in. It's the same federally. There's 2 major left wing parties and one minor left wing party. There's only one right wing party.

The system is beyond broken.

When you lay it out like that it's incredibly sad. What a stupid province we live in.

Ontario has had a Liberal party leader since 2003, before Ford. People were upset with Kathleen Wyne and basically voted for anyone else.

To it was a case of cutting off your nose to spite your face, but a lot of people are stupid and short sighted. I didn't vote for the jackass.

Excellent. I was pissed off when I heard they were cutting this trial off early.
